The big “why do you hate AI?” Thread got comments and quotes turned off, but here’s the main reason I hate AI:

It’s being developed by the worst people on the planet solely to enrich themselves at the expense and labor of the world’s vulnerable populations. Everything else stems from that

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

My aunt once got super drunk while cooking for Thanksgiving. We all made faces when we tasted each dish, because there was this weird flavor. She said, "I made everything with eggnog instead of milk, genius, right?" Gravy, potatoes, dressing, EVERYTHING

IT WAS NOT GENIUS

My ex's grandma's cooking was justly feared by all. At one grisly holiday feast her daughter-in-law whimpered, "Dorothy, how did you get the turkey to *taste* like that," and she beamed, "Well, I cook the turkey the night before, and I slice it and I leave it out overnight to dry."

My aunt who famously can’t cook tried to make a pumpkin pie. She didn’t know what cloves were, so she put garlic cloves in it. Whole.

The #crochetaway theme for this week is Gratitude.

At this time of year in particular, I'm incredibly grateful for nature and all the beautiful flowers in the garden.

When someone says "financial innovation," it almost always means "a new kind of fraud that hasn't been outlawed yet" (and these new kinds of fraud are usually old kinds of fraud with a fresh coat of paint).

9/ One tool could help: vaccines. After researchers in France discovered bird flu was traveling on dust and aerosols, they turned to vaccinating the country’s ducks. The results: A near-total reduction in cases. But USDA hasn't authorized their use in poultry here in the U.S.

6/ The simulation showed that where the wind blew, the virus followed.

In the first few weeks of the virus’ spread, I found that farms downwind were 20x as likely to see outbreaks.

1/ Today, ProPublica is running a piece I've been working on for a bit. It's about what happened with a devastating wave of bird flu earlier this year, as egg prices hit record highs.

And it's a story that illuminates the ways the U.S. is failing to control what could become the next pandemic. 🧵
