Happy #pretendpanel!

I find external challenges extreeeemely helpful. Setting a tough but achievable goal for myself with a clear outcome is a big part of my productivity, and things like word goals really help. The trick is to know what's achievable, and what's too overwhelming 😅

No, since I have to do things at my own pace. I find pitch events very useful though, since it means I can spend way too much time making graphics on Canva. If only I could be that dedicated to my writing...

Love most of these in theory, but in practice I’m an unreliable participant & they don’t work for me. I’ve learned not to commit myself to anything lest I let others down.

I don’t find prompts helpful because they seldom coincide with ideas which spark inspiration.

My answer to this #PretendPanel question is Yes and No. #Writing challenges can help you get "unstuck", but sticking religiously to challenges can be restrictive and unproductive. I use them as just another tool when I need some motivation and inspiration.

The best way to support other #writers is to share your knowledge and help to spread the word of a book's existence. There is so much misinformation and lack of information about certain phases. And discoverability is hard at the best of times.

Actually, I think they do help, with a prompt involved or with help from my other writing buddies in some groups I'm in. In person or virtual write ins and sprinting can be fun and helpful. Do it!

#PretendPanel Nov 22: I do! I love sprints when I'm drafting. They're a great way to force myself to block out distractions. We've started doing monthly leaderboards on the @worldbuildcast.bsky.social Discord, and I love the gamified challenges that @goblincitywriters.bsky.social does.

Daily prompts for 100 word pieces helped keep me doing a little writing every day when I felt completely drained. Sprints are hit or miss for me, but when they hit it’s a great help. Never really done a big month-long thing, and I know it likely wouldn’t work for me.

#PretendPanel November 22nd: I usually write in sprints, either with folks from my writing groups, or just Pomodoroing it myself. I do the same for design or software development, breaking things down into smaller tasks. Word count isn't important, just focusing on the task.

Sprinting is really helpful, especially if I'm working through a challenging scene and more prone to distraction. I find writeathons aren't really my speed these days. I like bouncing between projects and don't want to feel guilty about it lol #pretendpanel

Writing sprints have been surprisingly helpful in forcing me to get stuff down and not be distracted. It's not always good, but it's SOMETHING.

This month was my first time doing a writeathon & it started off great, but fell off quickly. I think my style doesn't fit it well 😩

Most of them aren't useful to me due work and unpredictably of my ability to function. That said, I'm finding that very narrow scoped ones, like prompts, can be very useful for a "well, why not?"

Like fleshing out an ancient civilization or a wipsnip word making me write 250 words.

Depending on your closeness, I'd say be observant of their non-writing needs. There's so, so many stressors in modern life, and all that gets in the way of writing.

Paying attention to people's struggles and trying to reduce those burdens where possible is huge.

praxis or whatever

Ill put it this way… a prompt inspired an entire novel for me.

I struggle with putting ideas together sometimes, and prompts force me to reshuffle the deck in my head, challenge me to write about things I might not think to write about.

Sprints and marathons? I write fast anyhow🤷‍♀️

It's less about being 'useful' and more about being 'fun.' I like prompt games because it's fun to share with my friends, read their responses, etc. I sometimes do pomodoros through Spirit City, but where that helps is ringing a bell to remind me to fuckin' write. I still take it

Writing Sprints are extremely helpful. Sometimes I need a good accountability partner when I'm dealing with executive dysfunction. I don't often use or need a prompt or anything like that unless I'm aiming for publication in a specific themed anthology.

I love the occasional writing sprint, but after this month, I'm trying to slow down my writing so I can enjoy a better balance of hobbies. It's why I don't think I will participate in writeathons again. Prompts, on the other hand, never helped me. They do the opposite of inspire. #pretendpanel

Yes and no, #pretendpanel.

The yes side: writeathons is how I got started writing long-form prose, then sprinting built my muscles, and I still turn to short fiction prompts because my brain doesn't generally think in short-form automatically.

The no side: I don't so much need ...

I'm in a Discord server with some amazing writers who are experienced in the query trenches. Some are agented. They've guided me through the querying hurdles, and I can now pay that forward to other entering writers.

Uplifting is important, as so many said. I also think we need to extend grace if things slip away from those who "make it". There's a different level of stress & we shouldn't take it personally when we fall through the cracks. It's like being friends with people who have children.
