Hakubon is technically a spirit, but it’s my version of ‘fucked up deer’. It permanently sheds the velvet of its antlers, which hang like bloody curtains, and its legs are all bone. Its eyes are entirely black with small dots of light. Here’s a flash fiction piece I wrote about it!
Return to Her Roots The thrum of insects beating their wings and the gentle burbling of the not too distant river muffled Hakubon's already quiet hoofsteps. It made each placement carefully, cheeking the moss beneath its hoofs for any wayward critters skittering between leaf litter and arching roots. Velvet soft ears swiveled from side to side atop its head, searching for the siren song of the lost soul that had called it to this part of the Amstelvoort. Just beyond a twisted tree with streaks of blue and green trailing up its trunk Hakubon found the sombre melody once more. Hakubon moved slowly, not wanting to frighten the little soul more than it already must be. It saw the body first. Had Hakubon not known the creature was already dead, it would have thought the rat was merely sleeping, taking advantage of a small shaft of sunlight that breached through the Amstelvoort's dense canopy. But its chest did not rise and fall in the steady rhythm of living things. It was not the jaws of a predator that had signed its end, no, abody simply not well designed for life had been the unfortunate lot of this creature's life. Rats already had such a tragically short lifespan, but it did not make the Hakubon and the Amstelvoort mourn the loss of their child any less. A single tear slipped down Hakubon's muzzle and onto the head of the eternally resting rat. "Why won't he wake up?" came a faint squeak The shadowy outline of a rat crouched before the motionless body at Hakubon's hoofs. He looked up at Hakubon with confusion bristling along his spine. Ah, I see now. Hakubon bowed its head, the bloody velvet that clung to its antlers brushing against the damp moss, and gazed softly upon the lost soul. "Do you not recognize him?" Hakubon asked. "No." "There comes a time where all of us must return once again to the Amstelvoort's roots, little one." "I-I don't understand," squeaked the little rat. "He and you are one and the same." "My time has not yet come. There is still so much I need to do." The rat frantically darted back and forth over the body. "I wish that were true, my child, but your time on this mortal plane was meant to be a short one." "That can't be!" the rat wailed. Hakubon gently bunted its muzzle against the lost little soul and hushed it calmly. "This does not mean the end, little one. Watch." Hakubon rubbed its antlers across the bark of a nearby tree, letting the Amstelvoort know it was time. The moss beneath the rat's body slowly crept up and around, enveloping it in the Amstelvoort's waiting embrace. "Wait! No!" The lost soul tried to tear away at the creeping tendrils to no avail. "I'm not ready. Can't you let me stay?" he pleaded. "A soul is not meant to wander Valhoon outside the safety of a body. You would fade away just as the stars do in the morning light." "Is there nothing you can do for me?" "Look around you, little one. What do you see?" The lost soul turned around slowly. The towering odecia trees surrounded him, their multicolored bark twisting in beautiful abstract shapes. Smaller trees of all different species interspersed the giants of Wodecia: elms, oaks, pines, birches, and so many more. Mushrooms crowded the base of the trees, and patches of flowers and herbs littered the forest floor. "Every part of the Amstelvoort was set down there by one of Her children joining Her roots once more. Your death is not the end for you, merely a new beginning. You can join Her in watching over our many children, nourishing them so that they may go on to live their lives and one day return to the soil and begin the cycle anew," Hakubon said. "But I have nothing to provide. I have no grand experiences to feed Her roots. I will be but a rot, destined to be a burden in both life and death. "That is simply not true, little one. You have lived a life of hardship, as the lives of your kind are so often wont to be, but that does not make it any less worthy of continuing to provide for your siblings. I promise that you will be anything but a burden upon the Amstelvoort. You will be new life, beautiful and bright in its own right." "How can you be so sure?" "Because I have led hundreds of lost souls like yourself back home. Each one carried the same fears as you, and each one flourishes beneath your feet now." The rat twitched his nose and glanced to the moss still slowly enveloping his body. "Can I make a request?" "You may." "Will you visit me? Just to make sure I am okay in this new life?" It was a promise Hakubon had made dozens of times before, and one it had kept each and every time. "Of course." The rat nodded, satisfied, and curled around his now moss covered body. His shadowy form melted away and in its place sprouted a patch of sage. The small purple blossoms and velvety leaves swayed gently beneath Hakubon's breath. "Rest easy, little one."

Wagons over there, horses tied here, and that spot’s basically a natural trough.” As if on cue, Percival dipped his head and drank. “I think the monks go in on foot from here.” She narrowed her eyes. That was a stretch. “You benefit from dragging this out,” she muttered. Aldous didn’t argue. Instead, he whispered something to Percival, tied him to a low branch, and turned toward the overgrown trail. “I’m going to check it out. I’d love for you to join me.” Heiden pressed her lips together to keep from unleashing a string of curses. She reminded herself he was under a lot of pressure. She glanced toward the eastern path, then back at the cramped, bramble-choked trail. There was no one else she would’ve done this for. Not even her brothers. “…Fine. I’m coming.” She didn’t bother hiding the frustration in her voice.

Why you shouldn't read Plight of The Last Paladin.

It's pretty dark. I don't lean heavy into gore or sexualized violence. But the story starts with a girl feeding the bodies of executed criminals to hubgry pigs. And virgin sacrifice is a thing, as well as seduction by an incubus demon.
