A common monster in Ossedei is the barghest. A black hunting dog the size of a draft horse, barghests can turn invisible at will. But when they are invisible, the sound of clanking chains follows them. They are fae and intelligent for an animal. They can be trained, though not easily.

Pay attention, I shout into the ether, and Bob's head snaps up. He merely sighs as the shadow man closes in, his identity briefly exposed by a street lamp overhead. “Witch blood.” Reverend Pryce circled him, not once taking his eyes off him. “You are her most loyal servant.” He grabbed something else from his belt, Unravelling metal began to jingle with each step he took, and Avery was filled to the brim with primal fear. “So, tell me. Where is she?” Avery trembled, quick to shake his head while the reverend stood behind him. “I do not know.” “You lie.” Fire laced around one of his wrists. He spasmed, a scream tearing out from his throat. He struggled harder, trying to get away from the fire, but it clung. It branded him. It would not leave his flesh. It made him collapse to his knees. No matter how hard he tried to get away, it stayed. “Stop this!” Tristan struggled harder, hauling away from the grips restraining him best he could. “Avery!” It was impossible for Avery to focus. The burning would not stop. The pungency of burning flesh festered in his nostrils. “Where is she?” the reverend repeated. “I c-can’t!” he sobbed. His wrist was still on fire. “I won’t! Please!” Another iron cuff locked on his other wrist. His voice broke in the middle of another horrible scream. The pain would not end. It consumed him. “It will not be long before your flesh becomes charred. Not even your wicked magic can heal that. There will be no choice but to cut off your hands. I will shoot your brothers dead. I will cut out your fellow sinner’s tongue. Your father will languish in the ashes of his ill-gotten gains.”

Alex lifted her chin and kissed her, lingering over her lips as though memorizing the feel of them against his. “Please get through this alright. I know you’re powerful, and I trust the others to do their work implicitly, but this isn’t something I can patch with some gauze and an IV tube. Just… please come back. I need to sweep you off your feet the way I’ve wanted to for years.” A few fumbling interjections lumbered over Beren’s tongue as she struggled to find something to say that wouldn’t sound completely lame. She settled for reaching over and bopping Alex’s nose. “I’m the witch. If anything, I should be doing the sweeping. You know, because of the brooms and stuff.” Seeing his face twist as he held back laughter, Beren yanked her thyrsus from him and thew her shoulders back, hoping to recapture some dignity. “Shut up. I’m not good at the romantic stuff.” “You just handle the god problem, and I’ll take care of the rest.” Alex tucked an errant lock of hair behind Beren’s ears. He kissed her cheek and squeezed her hand before walking to the Jeep and sliding in. “Go on and do your thing, Priestess of Dionysus. But after this, you’re going to have to get used to someone else taking care of you for once.”

*Get the* fuck *up, or you’re going to fucking die.* “Go fuck y’self,” he mumbled, but the thought kicked at the back of his brain enough that he managed to get his hands down flat on the planks, push himself up to something that looked halfway like sitting if you tilted your head and squinted. *Kifers.* Could’ve wished he’d done a worse job with the seams, but they came loose eventually, enough that he could pull a wrench out of the side of his shirt and a rake from the waistband of his trews. Couldn’t hold ’em without his hands shaking, but hells, lock on a cage at the bottom of a navy ship was likely bad enough he’d been able to mill it with one hand tied behind his back and a pared down pin for a pick. *Lock.* Couldn’t see it properly in the dark, but he didn’t need to – he’d been milling gigs (no, fuck, *picking locks*) since he was barely old enough to walk, and Ada’d had him practising blindfolded when she’d needed something for him to do over summers that wasn’t running rooftops in the rain or throwing knives indoors where he might hit a customer who wouldn’t know to dodge. *‘Focus. Listen. Feel the lock through your fingertips – let the tension tell you what to do, where to move, how to use your tools. Go slow, go steady – a thief in a hurry is a thief who makes mistakes, and you always have more time than you think. And don’t forget to breathe, hm?’*

“I enjoyed it.” Rum, slouched down into the very corner of the sofa, twirled a lock of her hair around a finger, looking blissfully nostalgic about reading an incredibly thick book. “You could smell the ancient knowledge within those pages.” “That was decay. That smell in old books? It’s decay.” Now Twii sat back, flopping against the cushions. Hedric had had enough of Twii’s attitude by now and did something he hoped he wouldn’t regret. “May I ask why you’re so angry? I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong, or Rum, for that matter.” This was tantamount to shouting for Hedric and it made him feel nervous. He could feel a headache coming along. “Whatever it is, I’m sorry.” “Oh, it’s not your fault. Twii’s just angry because they wanted to do something incredibly dangerous and can’t because they actually care about us and don’t want us getting hurt.” Rum patted Hedric’s knee, comfortingly, but all it did was heighten his nervousness at the unexpected touch. “They’re growing as a person.”

“White brick is cocaine, yellow one’s heroin,” Joey said matter of factly. Sebastian eyed the drugs. “Surely that’s not all there is,” he said. Smuggling mortal drugs through the port wasn’t the kind of damning evidence against Serena that he needed. That was practically what running the ports was for. Joey shook his head, looking as grim as Sebastian had ever seen him. “Nah. Got a couple crates of guns and ammo. And some others with black lockboxes that I reckon got the magic drugs in em.” He rubbed the back of his neck, squinting into the distance. “I want Niamh to look ‘em over before we crack the seals. Kimmy agrees with me. They don’t feel right.”

A dark crack in the wall in front of him suddenly interrupted his train of thought. He squinted his eyes and only now saw the outlines of a wooden door in the otherwise even brick wall, a door that had just opened a bit due to being hit on the door frame brutally. It was just as grimy and dusty as the rest of the alley, blending in perfectly with the wall. It would have stayed invisible had it not been for his punch. The door had a lock on it, but it was so old and rusted that it had broken by the force of the impact.

He walked in, and despite himself he paused by the stone-and-clay fireplace where musicians played for a circle of dancing children. The song was a familiar tongue-twisting chant every child knew. It crossed the circle back and forth, one child asking the questions, the opposite child answering. "Three Keys, three LOCKs, three LOCKS , Three Keys. Before she could finish speaking, Michael passed over her bag and jacket, and he pulled her up by her arm and dragged her outside. They both could see the pair of siblings making their way down the road. "You don't need to drag me outside!" “Eve, take a walk. Go with them. Get your mind off what's bothering you.” He said, before closing the door on her face and locking it. If Eve didn't, Amy would definitely KILL him for this later, but it was worth it. Once she was gone, he took a seat and began tapping his foot. It was quick taps, over and over, until it was like a drum going off. Normally, he would take a Z-pill when feeling like this. Except, he couldn’t find them! Vermin didn’t take them, and Amy and Eve didn't know about them. He got up and began pacing around the room in an attempt to calm himself. “Just relax, Michael.”

I patted the spot on the loveseat next to myself. Amy sat next to me. She took a moment to nuzzle me. I noticed she was staring at Fiona. They had their eyes locked. After a moment longer than I liked, Amy looked away. She clasped her hands around the badge and then closed her eyes. She sat still and silent. Nothing happened. Amy sat motionless. Her expression remained blank. “She is bold,” Fiona said, “I like her.”
