From BLUDEYE BEACH. Manny, now a bartender, scared off a pushy random guy who was bothering his lady friends, and is now trying to learn how to best wingman.

“What about you, Edie?” Manny asked, moving back over to them. “I don't wanna chase off someone you’d be interested in. Was that guy just not your type, or what?”

“Oh. Uh, no, not really,” Edie said, her cheeks instantly beginning to burn. She fought off the instinct to make sure that Milo wasn’t standing right behind her. “I don’t really need to meet anyone. Not right now, I mean, I’m just not – but I do, um, you know. Men.”

“You do men? Kind of weird to brag about, but okay,” Manny said with a snort.

“No, I mean I – yes, I have been known to, on occasion, with …” Edie buried her face in her hands.

I try not to use "poor/miscommunication" as a trope, but I struggle a lot with making myself be understood and understanding other people, and this is often reflected in my characters. This is possibly why I spend so much time inside character heads. +

Both kinda well and kinda terribly?
Like, when forced to work as colleagues, Kallista and Geni argue over ethics but come to a working compromise in time. Over personal emotions, they will talk things out and get on really well.

It's just that there's this _damn subtext_ in the way!!!

Generally speaking, I try to write main characters that communicate well with each other in all situations. If an argument or misunderstanding happens, it’s quickly resolved. I just can’t stand stories where that’s not the case. #Smutcember

“Something I suspect is not beyond either of you,” K’ellon noted. “Not that that is a bad thing. It just depends whose side you are on.”
“That’s…pragmatic.”
“I’m a soldier. There are only two types of soldier: pragmatic and dead.”
Having carefully avoided becoming a soldier himself, Av’ry couldn’t argue. “Whose side do you think we’re on?”
“Your own, obviously,” K’ellon replied. “It is quite apparent that neither of you are great patriots. You have your own agenda. If it aligns with ours, then so be it.”
“That’s not entirely true,” Av’ry protested. “We really do want to help stop the Esraseans.”
“That may be, but it is still different from being a patriot. Don’t get me wrong, though, I don’t mind. Mercenaries can be very useful.”
Av’ry had never considered himself a mercenary, before. Truthfully, he kind of liked the idea. “Either way, our interests align for the moment. So, there’s no problem, right?”
“I suppose not.” K’ellon appeared amused.

Ashrah gasped, her speech cut short when Nitara grabbed her by the horns and pulled her into a kiss.

Liquid fire flooded Ashrah’s veins, and for a moment, she feared she had lost control over the Eternal Flame. But then she realised it was that other type of fire, and seeing how Nitara had not stabbed herself in her tusks, Ashrah melted into her lover’s exploring touches.

She had never thought about doing that in her natural form. Even after embracing her whole self, she did not believe her demonic side capable of indulging in such mortal passions.

From #Tenement, my dystopian mystery about people living in an infinite building.

“But what about Rule 84?” I didn’t know why I was arguing. I wanted to take that book home and devour it immediately.
“I think we can bend the Rules a little in this case.”
“Weren’t you the one who was just going on about how we have to follow the Rules so we don’t bring the Tenement down?”
He shrugged. “Some Rules are a bit more flexible than others.”
I was dumbfounded. He was taking an enormous risk, giving me this book. If someone found out, he could be in huge trouble—maybe even in danger of eviction.
“Why are you giving this to me?” I asked. “I mean—I’m grateful. But couldn’t you get in trouble? How do you know I won’t tell on you to the Collectors?”
“You won’t.” He gave me a knowing smile. “We both know you’re not the type to do that, Noah. And I trust you.”
“You barely know me.”
“But I knew your mother. And you’re her son, for better or worse. You’ll keep that book safe. And I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as much as she did. Just remember,” he added sternly, “the things in that book are only a fantasy, nothing more. Don’t get too carried away with it.”

Character kinks come from their personality, but sometimes that works in reverse; I wanted Luke to be most into Isabelle when she's going full badass mode, so I developed him to be more of a ""alpha"" personality in the beginning so the reveal/flip feels more satisfying.

How your characters approach sex should be as unique as your characters themselves. There's no rigid formula for how people are "supposed" to have sex; who your character is doesn't change.
However, DO keep in mind that a smutty scene is a great way to reveal character.

From Book 2 of my #Atlantis trilogy.

Amid the sprawling complex of the High King’s palace, which was in itself like a small city within the larger city, Kena and Mireia had months ago discovered a giant statue of Maajet, the Goddess of Justice. She stood several stories tall, with her feet on the ground and her head reaching all the way to the upper level of one of the palace’s many towers. A balcony ran behind the back of her head, and if one were to hop over the railing, one could reach her great stone braids, which were easy enough to climb. From the crown of the statue’s head, everything could be seen: the full view of the Citadel below, with its three concentric canals and the great walls that bordered them; and above, the magnificent vista of the clear starry sky.
This had lately become one of Mireia and Kena’s favorite spots. They would climb up and sit on the crown of Maajet’s Head for a long while, searching for the constellations, just letting the time slip away from them.
“There’s the khopesh—you see it?” Kena reached up and pointed to a cluster of stars in the eastern sky.
“No, where?”
He leaned close to her, to better share her point of view, and pointed over her shoulder. “Look, you see the mongoose, ona? Follow where its tail is pointing, due east. That’s the hilt of the khopesh.”

Writing snippet: The water was choppy, small peaks of waves that caught the sunlight, lapping at the sandy shoreline. Micah kicked around in the silt a bit until he found a wide, flat stone.

“Here,” he said, putting it in Shrimp's hand and maneuvering behind him, holding his arm at a low angle. He swept their arms back and forward. “Hold it low like that, flat to the water. Out to the side, and then when you get here”—he stopped at the pinnacle of the throw—“let go.” He stepped back.

Shrimp's brow was crinkled in concentration as he tried to mimic the motion. He swung out, released, and the rock hit a wave with a solid plop, sinking immediately. Shrimp frowned, then glared at Micah accusingly. Micah shrugged.

“Water’s too rough,” Lennie called from farther back. “You need still water.”

“Nah you don't,” Micah said. “Watch.”

He found another, smaller stone and swung out wide. It hit the water and sank.

Shrimp grinned, and Micah turned back to Lennie, a slight flush in his cheeks.

She tried and failed to suppress a chuckle. “Can't be good at everything, I guess.”

[Pyntal:] “You’ve never been?”
“No, I’m not much into that. Besides, I’m pretty sure they just invite us as a posturing thing. Like if we attend one of their parties, they can gloat to all the other politicians. It didn’t seem appropriate to get involved in that sort of thing.”
Pyntal shrugged. She didn’t really want to be someone’s political pawn, but a wild party on the other hand could at least break the monotony of this drab stone tomb.

“You heard that story already?” Milo asked. Edie realized she’d come to a stop, and Milo and Viola were both staring at her. Prickles of anxiety fought with the cold hands squeezing her heart.

“Not really,” she said, biting her lip. “Teddy – my dad – he just mentioned it, that there’s – that Janie Booker is a …” It was just a story, she told herself. Ghost stories weren’t real. But there really was a little stone bridge ten feet away, and she knew the name of a girl who supposedly haunted it, and saying the word ‘ghost’ out loud seemed like a very, very bad idea. She probably shouldn’t have even said Janie Booker’s name. She could hear the trickle of the stream running along the bank. If she listened hard enough, would she hear a girl’s voice? “I’m really bad at scary stuff.”

The hot water of the bath was a welcome respite, drawing out the tension of the day in Lex’s muscles. She relaxed against the walls of the claw-footed tub. When she closed her eyes, however, the prisoner’s face stared back at her from behind her eyelids.

She opened them again. “Talna?”

Her handmaiden looked up from the heater in the corner of the room. In one hand, she held a pair of small tongs; in the other, a tray of black iron. Cut into pieces no larger than a child’s fist, the stones appeared to absorb all light. “Yes, ma’am?”

“Am I a bad person?”

“For not stopping the execution?”

“For not doing anything. I’m the princess of Belenos. There must’ve been some way to prevent all this from happening—maybe not the execution, but the bombing, or…” Lex sighed, shoulders slumping.

Forcing away the memory, she returned to her borrowed computer. She drummed her fingertips against the desk as she considered her next angle of approach. Medical school had trained her to go straight to academic sources, to trust little else beyond the thorough and scientific research of her peers. But if academia was a bountiful river teeming with verifiable data, there also existed another body of information as broad and deep as the ocean. In its metaphorical waters lurked innumerable uneducated discussions and questionable conclusions in the form of online forums.

Ayana hesitated, her hands hovering over the keyboard. Then she committed, posing her queries to the entirety of the Internet.

In BLUDEYE BEACH, Edie was definitely the kid that loved learning in high school. Due to ~events~ she diverted pretty hard away from what she was interested in. When she got to college, she focused on a major & career that felt safe. Inevitably, she hated it.
