When prepping to draft this month, I made a point to do some planning via freewriting. I get frustrated writing a draft by hand, but for brainstorming, it's really helpful to slow myself down! (Plus, more visits to my beloved local coffee shop ❤️ )

“That poor man,” Edie said, her heart thudding painfully.

“Yeah, that happens a lot,” Viola said.
“People from out of town die here all the time.”

“Vi,” Milo said in a soft warning.

“Wait, seriously?” Edie asked. “Do people really die here a lot?”

“People who aren’t local don’t know how to be safe around here,” Milo said slowly.

“We try to help them,” Viola added. “But no one ever listens.”

“The Sheriff seems invested,” Edie said.

“Sheriff Siegel never does anything,” Milo muttered.

Bit of a stretch, but I'm going with ✨vibes✨

Constance Blake seeks out a local place to help her new daughter born without a charagma.

From #Charagma, my SFF dystopia about a world where all people are marked saved or damned from birth.

“If I weren’t a law-abiding woman,” the midwife had said, after seeing Constance’s inconsolable horror at her child’s missing charagma, “I might be inclined to say I’d heard a rumor.”
“A rumor?” Constance had asked, too distraught to catch the meaning of the woman’s tone, at first.
“Only a rumor,” the midwife went on. “Of a place in St. Epiphany’s District known for changing fates, so to speak. But of course I’d never advise anyone to chase that rumor. We all know the law of El, don’t we, Mrs. Blake? We all know what’s to be done with a child like that.”
Insane of her, to even make the insinuation—even with plausible deniability—knowing that the twins’ own father was currently away prosecuting forgers and secret Reprobates.
Insane of Constance, too, to respond not by reporting the woman to the authorities, but instead by asking another question: “Where might a not law-abiding woman find this place?”
St. Epiphany’s District.
Five blocks east of the trolley station.
An unassuming clockmaker’s shop across from a run-down chapel.
Ask for a clock with an extra hour.
The old woman behind the counter of the shop was busy polishing a crystal clock face when Constance uttered this question in a low, urgent burst.
Constance had half-expected to get no response except confused laughter from the woman, or at the very least an odd look. But the woman’s expression remained still, and only a slight hesitation in her polishing gave away that the phrase meant something to her.
“I’m afraid those clocks are only for our very needy customers,” she said after a moment. “We wouldn’t want to give them away to just anyone.”

Edie from Bludeye Beach likes *being* surprised (with nice things) but doesn't like knowing there *will be* a surprise - too many ways to kick off an anxiety spiral 😂

Milo would generally prefer no kinds of surprises at all, but tries to be ready for any eventuality.

I’ve completed manuscripts numbering in the double digits and I promise you, that only happens if you love the work. Writing is WORK, it’s hard, and you will always be terrible at it if the goal is to be Not Writing.

Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

“Does Manny have an older sister?” Edie asked, pointing at a shot of the two standing waist-deep in the ocean. Manny couldn’t have been more than ten years old, but he had the same uneven smile as he proudly held out a starfish. The girl standing next to him was 14 or 15, but she had the exact same crooked smile as she displayed an even bigger starfish.

Milo didn’t answer right away. When Edie glanced over at him, he was staring at the picture as well, a strained look on his face. “...Yeah. He did.”

I think, at least in my #Atlantis WIP, it's that while it's absolutely fine to want to leave a legacy or wrestle with big philosophical concepts, in the end nothing lasts forever, so the relationships you have with people right now are what really matter more than anything.

It had all always been fragile. Yet what had she been doing all this time? Playing silly games, procrastinating, telling herself “someday,” or “maybe tomorrow,” or “eventually.” Assuring herself that there was no need to act now because it was all inevitable anyway. Debating with herself over pointless philosophical questions about fate and free will when it didn’t really matter, did it? The only thing that mattered was that it was all going to end, one way or another, maybe sooner, maybe later. The only thing that mattered was reaching out into that abyss and finding a hand to grasp so that you knew you weren’t really alone. (Mireia about Kena, Book 2)

There are a lot of little moments that show the development of romantic & platonic love, but this is one of the Big Ones from Bludeye Beach; not a triumph of good over evil, not even really a major solution. Just the willingness to go through it together. #writingcommunity

Edie shook her head. “No, I’m just being really silly.” Her voice was a little louder than she intended. Briefly, she worried that Janie Booker might hear her. “Besides, if you’re scared, you just need to do it scared.”

“If you’re scared, I’ll do it with you,” Milo said. He said it as though it were the most natural thing in the world. When Edie looked at him, he was holding out his hand, and watching her with a sincerity she didn’t think she’d ever seen on anyone’s face. If it had been anyone else, at any other time, she would have thought they were making fun of her; but not Milo. Not when she took his hand, and he carefully walked with her across the bridge. He didn’t let go until Edie was breathing more calmly, and she was able to let go of him first.

“I’m sure you’re curdling your facial scrub. It does not matter how well you do in the bathroom, sweetie. Reschedule karaoke night or carol in the town square, I don’t care.” He lifted his sunglasses to gently dab his head with his scarf. “All right. From the top. Breath control. Actually,” he paused, his fingers hovering above the keyboard. “What if we make a little game out of this?”
“They yelled at us the last time we played the volume game,” Edie warned.
“So?” Will quirked an eyebrow. “How about it? Maybe this time you’ll have a chance. Ready?”
“No.”
“Perfect. Let’s go.”

“Bigger is… better, now isn't it?” Bert's voice strained before a deep, hollow thump hit the ground behind Mori, ending in a relieved exhale. A lighter thud soon followed, something like a heavy bag landing on ceramic. “I figured you'd want the space in there to work with.”

“Bigger means I could be out longer, which is a risk. But… I suppose that could be a benefit this time,” Mori wondered aloud as he shifted on his heels to face Bert and the large ceramic bowl he'd dragged down from the second floor.

“Oak and birch chips, incense, the long matches so you don't burn yourself further, and even a little pillow and blanket for when you inevitably fall over and sleep outside for the night,” Bert listed off the rest of what he'd gathered up, tallying each item on his fingers. “Did I miss anything?”

“You know I don't need the incense, right?”

“Yes, yes, but it just smells nice. It's for me, I'm babysitting you,” Bert let out an exaggerated whine while unpacking most of the bag and setting those items off to the side.

Teenagers being teenagers, amiright?

Milo only seemed to shift his weight, but then Grant was flying over Milo’s hip, away from Edie. Milo shepherded her back with his arm, keeping her behind him. Grant had landed hard on his knees and now scrambled up again, his face turning a purplish red.

“What the hell, Vance?” Grant demanded, and took another swing. Edie was reminded of wrestling in the water on Beach Day as Milo shifted again. With a blur of movement that Edie couldn’t track, Milo had shunted Grant’s arm to the side, then hit him hard enough in the ribs for Grant to exhale in a sharp groan. He hit the ground once more, Milo only moving to keep Edie behind him.

From the first chapter of THE CRUCIBLE OF THE BROKEN MOON, my space opera romantasy. The FMC, Lex, is eating dinner with her family (father Marcas, uncle Hendry, cousin Malina) and about to get herself in trouble by interjecting with a pesky topic. #WIPSnips #WritingCommunity

“We need to lift the tax on goods from Imbrasus, Uncle,” Malina was saying to Marcas. “People can manage starving through the winter, but they need either black iron or firewood, and we have precious little of both. Either that, or we send logging teams beyond the habitable zone to harvest Belen trees.”

“Absolutely not,” said Hendry. “The king is not going to waste the military’s time or resources protecting loggers in uncharted territory.”

“But we’ve made advancements charting the terrain south of Nara’s Reach and tracking the movement of the storms there. With enough data and the right conditions, a team could last up to two weeks and harvest five hundred pounds of untouched timber.”

Something Malina had said stuck in Lex’s mind, a stubborn stain refusing to wash away with the flow of conversation. “People cannot manage starving through the winter,” she interrupted, raising her voice. “Where do you get the idea that people can just ignore their hunger and subsist off—what, firewood? Certainly not black iron.” A shudder rolled through her at the thought of putting one of those small, unsettling stones in her mouth.
