Happy New Year 🥳

#pretendpanel calendar for January just dropped. I'm thinking about Changes, Growth and Evolution this month. How has your relationship with writing changed over time? Looking forward to finding out ✌️
(This was actually so hard for me to take seriously and not write something facetious, FYI #pretendpanel 😂)

Don't try to be perfect, and keep forging on through disappointment. It's a long road ahead but I promise you it is filled with so much joy.
See, I told you I wouldn't make it about romance, #pretendpanel 😜 so tell me...

February 14th: If you could send a kind, loving message to your earlier writer self, what would it be?

I love being transported, #pretendpanel. I enter flow state easily when I'm working on something I've solidly established. With newer or shorter things it can be harder to get back in the zone, but when I'm doing something long-form I love to just get lost in that first-draft playground and go wild.
Don't worry #pretendpanel, I won't be asking awkward questions about romance just cos tomorrow is Valentines 😉 Instead...

Do you enjoy writing or reading political plotlines?

All writing is political. The simple question is whether your writing is in support of the status quo or not.

Mine is not. And I enjoy writing my dissent.
Today is Waitangi Day here in Aotearoa, #pretendpanel, and it gets me thinking about the role of politics in the stories we tell.

Everything i write is political. I can't imagine writing a story where how the government functions doesn't feature, and if it doesn't then that's a statement of what a good government should look like.

I have written corporate dystopias, sci-fi God-Emperors, anarchic communes & more #pretendpanel

sometimes yes, sometimes no. i don't like when the author is throwing it in just to throw it in but if it makes sense with the book, go for it. i recently read 'send flowers' which is about climate change protesters and a plant that talks. #writingq

since i write contemporary fiction, often you can tell the characters views. sometimes it's explicit, other times it's just based on the characters' opinions on progressive vs traditional things. #pretendpanel
I'm breaking the rule of not bringing up politics, #pretendpanel! Still, I think it's important to think about it in our writing.

Playing catchup, #PretendPanel friends!

I won't rehash what more intelligent folks have already said about the inherent political quality of writing and reading, but I will say for me personally I rarely consciously choose to try to make a political statement with my writing.

I find...

yes! while real world poltiics can get a bit much for me sometimes, I thoroughly enjoy pieces of media with political commentary. persona 5 royal is one of my favorite video games, for example. and lord of the rings is my favorite book series.

#PretendPanel All writing is political. In a society that tries to erase us, being proud and queer is a political, and brave, act. I don't shy away from my real-world influences in my writing, but I don't call out what exactly I've referred to, either.

Real world politics is at the very heart of what and why I write. The Regency is a moment of world wars and fighting fascism (though it’s never described that way) and it’s the backdrop for all my characters falling in love because… we need that.

Timely because my >1 year WIP features a FMC who's secret power is the ability to weaponize ice.

I've nearly given up on this story with recent events, but I realized the answer is to make it even stronger. Take back ice. Use it as a weapon against corruption and ultimate power grabs. #pretendpanel

Tons! Death, love, belief, religion, & culture all have political currents through them. We are trying to step carefully through research.

Characters can have different opinions from me, so I strive to understand their POVs so I don't suggest opinions they don't actually have, either #PretendPanel

I enjoy reading them, but not always. If I need an escape, I'll seek out other kinds of plots, and if the politics get too complicated too fast, I might bow out. I've finished some high fantasy stories, but not all.

I don't often write "Politics", but everything is political #PretendPanel

#PretendPanel Feb 7: A lot. A lot a lot a lot.

We face the same questions over and over again. How to govern, how open or closed a society should be, how to keep everyone fed and healthy, what does justice look like, who has access to the levers of power and how do we decide who pulls them...

Real world politics (as in "shit governments do") has inspired plotlines and side-plots in pretty much all of my books, sometimes in subtle ways, but usually in pretty obvious symbolic ways:

Talia's fear of cops (written in June of 2020)

The refugee issue in the fantasy...

#pretendpanel 7: I covered some of this yesterday. #ThroughTheCracks is my intentionally political story. It isn't really a commentary on specific current events, so much as capitalism as a whole. Which I'm really fucking tired of.

When I brainstorm lore or stories, I always use real world politics & scenarios as inspirations. Sometimes I explore those politics. Sometimes I critique them. I often try to do both and imagine different perspectives of people who are experiencing those politics in day to day life

Yes to both. To me, politics make a story more interesting because it adds a very real and human element to the story as politics at the end of the day is shaped by people & their beliefs. Also I’m a big fan of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Gundam if that tells you anything 😂

A lot more than I realized at first, I think. And it doesn't show up in the more obvious parallel ways, but it informs a lot of the worldbuilding and some of the plot.

I am marginalised. Most of my characters are marginalised along one or more axes, including orientation, gender, race, disability. They live in societies that are unequal, and often oppressive. Of course real world politics is a thing in my writing! Even in my fantasy worlds I'm writing about...

I mean, everything is political, even in romance where we like to pretend that there aren't political choices being made. That having been said, one of my favorite books ever is KJ Charles's _A Seditious Affair_, which is extremely political (and set in 1820). #PretendPanel

#pretendpanel rampant transphobia in the US gov has made me bitter, and I often vent about it in the way I write my characters. They either are or will become unapologetic in their queerness.
I'm quite loud about this sentiment: "fuck the systems that try to stop us from living authentic lives."

#pretendpanel When I first had the idea for queer teens in a sports competition, I didn't intend for current politics to be in it.

But then trans sports bans started to affect me & my friends on the swim team.

So yes, politics impacted AnimalsWIP. It's about fighting back against these bans.
