But if you are really concerned about owning your ebooks, I suggest you buy the epub files from retailers like smashwords or directly from the author.

I think it's also worth considering that when you bought an MMPB, you bought it. You don't own ebooks. We went from a model of affordable ownership to subscription fees, DRM, temporary licenses, and material that can be altered or removed without your knowledge. Own to rent isn't the better deal.
