Some weird worldbuilding today! I don't believe I've ever explained how people pay rent in the Tenement yet... Very curious what y'all will make of this 😄

From #Tenement, my dystopian mystery about people living in an infinite building.
“Noah, go check the slot,” my father told me. “Make sure there’s not any last minute quids.” The slot he referred to was a small horizontal opening in the wall by our front door, sealed off by a tarnished metal plate on a creaky hinge; a lever was embedded in the wall beside it. I pushed the plate open with my fingers, feeling around in the hollow space inside. “Empty,” I said. “Give the lever a pull, just in case.” I did, and waited for the telltale clinking sound. But I got nothing. “Come on,” I sighed, and pulled it again. I don’t know why my father decided I should be the one to do this. The Tenement hated me. Kazuo would have probably had better luck. After the third pull, I heard a clackety-clackety-clack inside the slot. I pushed the plate open and scooped out four quids—colorful little glass balls about the size of my fingertips. Quids were the primary form of currency in the Tenement. Every apartment had a delivery slot just like ours, and throughout the month, quids would appear there, generated by the Tenement as a reward for our good behavior. At least, that was what we told ourselves. In reality, the distribution of quids was notoriously unpredictable. This was, of course, how we paid our rent, though what the Landlord did with all those quids we sent him each month, no one knew. My father and many others theorized that it had something do with keeping the water and electricity going. How exactly that worked was never explained, but it didn’t matter. All we knew was we had to keep doing it, month after month, and not ask questions. Pay the rent or die in the dark.

“Why? Who are you, exactly?” He glared at her, overflowing with quiet malice. “You know I waited for her return every day? I never gave up hope, even after years had passed. “When I was old enough, I became a scout, to search for her. Anything to keep from believing that she was gone. That she had abandoned me. “But then you show up instead. And I get to learn the ‘truth’ thirdhand. Tell me, is that fair, outsider? Is it? Because to me, this all seems like a cruel joke.” Fox stared at him for a long moment, not understanding. “Abandoned? By who…?” And then she realized. “Oh. Shit.” His mouth set into a thin line. “You didn’t know?” “My mother… she didn’t really talk about her life before. I think it hurt her too much.” “A convenient excuse. Maybe you simply aren’t who you claim to be.” “I have proven that. Why would I lie about the rest?” “A good question.” His stare bored holes into her. Fox met his eyes, giving him what he asked for. “Everything I said was true. Iella was my mother and I’m sorry you had to find out this way. About her death.”

My current working title for this story is The Dawn's Blood, after the central draconic relic that drives a lot of the plot.

This subterranean lake is extremely important to the city of Ynthessen, as it provides the hidden city with all of its water, allowing for it to be independent from the rest of the world.

It also is used to fill all of the algae vats that grow the majority of the food 🧵

She was about to take her chances, when the Graigman emerged from the bathroom. He was an average height for his kind, with a muscular build, especially in his hairy forearms. He had his hair slicked back in an effort to disguise how curly it naturally was, complete with mutton chops. He strode to the bar, pausing to give Lily a passing glance, and in that moment, she felt something stir within. It wasn’t much, but it was more than she’d felt all night. Abandoning subtlety and craft, she mustered what glamour she had left and just stared at the Graigman from her seat. It took longer than usual, but he turned and met her gaze. He appeared to nod—it was hard to tell because her vision was deteriorating—and she answered with a smile. “—couldn’t help but notice you here by yourself, m’lady.” She must’ve blacked out for a moment, because the next thing she knew, he was at her table with a pair of mugs. He grinned at her, revealing a shiny gold tooth. Now that he was up close, she sensed the lust and desire radiating off him. “Yes,” she said. “Something about you called out to me.” “I might say the same about you, lass,” he replied. “You have a … shall I say … striking look to you.” She brushed hair behind her ear and forced a blush. At least her human form was holding up enough for him to find her attractive. The dim light surely helped, too.

A woman emerged, a dark complexion with silver hair, and quite thin. Her face was a reflection of her husband’s enthusiasm, in that it was reversed. She was the anchor to reality that kept Mason from flying off into the stratosphere.

I went with “backwards.”

But, like, here’s a thing I worry about. People show curiosity about gargoyles being main characters in my fantasy and I worry readers will be disappointed.

A- Im pedantic about it. They aren’t just muscly imps.
B- They mostly appear in human form.
He once again eyed her pajamas as if struggling not to judge her taste in fashion. Excuse me, but I hadn’t planned on getting caught up in a demonic battle or attending a gargoyle conference, Sir, she thought, giving him a sullen look in return. “Will someone do the honors?” Julian looked out again towards the guardians. He meant someone to guard her? Helena looked around, hoping that Kia would volunteer to keep her company, but when she turned, it was the twins that stood on either side of her. Dismissed, the other guardians slipped wordlessly in different directions. The large blonde woman stepped backwards and the entire bulk of her muscular human form was swallowed by her great stone griffin, as if her flesh had been merely an illusion. Edgar did the same, but gave them a thumbs-up gesture that was the last part of him to be swallowed by cold stone. She looked up to see Kia and Jim both effortlessly clamber up the western face of the chapel and disappear into their respective stone avatars, leaving the night chill and quiet once more

Trapped in another plane. Some experimental shit, 😳 but I think it evokes today’s word.

- Brother’s Keeper, book one of my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power.
Bared to a wind so cold his father's crying still colder and they are real, his fate and his soul-name laid on him in that wind, shrieking over the bottomless drop: the abyss of his father's despair so cold that it burns; and now he burns red, his body a furnace of agony with no hope. The heat of compression, of being squeezed from the womb; the heat of blood and the sting of a hand larger than hiswhole back. White flame scours his lungs—the air— Doom! A cold nipple he does not want. Born again, young again, all meaning in Drie, the voice that sings with love, the hands that feed himcomfort. Drie's arms encircle him; his calming heartbeat cools his fears and then she comes with her apricot smell and her fire-colored hair. And now he burns. Like the red flicker feathers he stole from Cerel to hide in Drie's bed, he burns, in horrible flashes like late summer lightning. When it eases, if it eases, he will die, if it will stop. I banged a fist against the front wall of the carriage, the prearranged signal that we needed to stop. Emmelina lunged for the door, and I almost missed catching her shoulder. "I'm sorry, lady, but we need to wait for the carriage to stop before you open the door." She pursed her lips and sat down but continued to fidget while we waited. Then I accompanied her, and the maids, to some bushes for privacy. Judith and Eve exchanged distraught glances when they saw the girl wasn't locked away in her mind, but they didn't seem to have anything to say about it. Just like every roadside privy break, I stood watch for intruders while they saw to their business, waiting to attend to my own needs once Emmelina was safely returned to the carriage. This time though, when we moved to return ... Emmelina was gone. One moment she was at my elbow, pointed toward the carriage, then, with a backward step, she slipped out of my peripheral vision. And when I looked back, all that remained of her were her shoes and hose. The maids squealed, which drew a guard, Marcus, to our makeshift privy.

With a swoosh, the portal opened, a black vortex ringed by red sparks. Fortunately, they could not see through the veil between realms and into the horrors that awaited them. Brave and skilled as the crew was, glimpsing the waking nightmare they would be sailing into might be the encouragement some needed to desert. The Moonlight Storm was in perfect condition. Its crew looked ready to sail against any enemy of Envasar. Sipetru was in retrograde. All auspicious signs. “Then let’s sail!” the captain shouted back.

It’s for stabbing things,” Wren commented dryly, staring at the pale, curved blade as it glinted against the stone. “No one likes a smart ass.” The mercenary frowned and gave her a sideways glare. “I like her just fine,” Molly chirped from behind them, staring over their shoulders to get a look at the recess in the wall. “I’m rather fond of her myself,” Spencer said softly in his deep velvet voice. He was holding Wren’s hand and rubbed his thumb in small circles across her skin. She was still annoyed with him for snooping about when she’d explicitly asked him to stay put but her anger was retreating, giving way to a different sort of heat in her veins. “Blades like this are built for a specific purpose,” Bruce soldiered valiantly on, ignoring the sarcasm. “If it were just for stabbing things, it would be a standard straight edge, but this curve is scythe-like. It has to be ceremonial. It wouldn’t be any good in a real fight.”

Without any warning, my body launches backward and slams against the wall, my head snapping back and smacking the brick. I land on my butt. My eyes squeeze shut, a sharp whine sounding in my ears. I blink rapidly as the world rebalances, and I register shoes scuffling away. “Are you okay?” the girl’s voice says somewhere above me. My ears are still ringing. “Cy, you idiot! I think you gave her a concussion. Gus, go get Triona.” “Okay,” someone murmurs. I think it’s the skinny guy. Footsteps hurry away. “Sorry. Shit.” Another male voice. “I thought she was attacking you.” The girl comes into my vision as she bends down in front of me, but I gaze up to look for my attacker. He’s lean, with light bronze skin and thick black hair falling in haphazard curls over his brow. He peers down at me through enviably long eyelashes, and somewhere through my brain haze, I feel the urge to pluck them right out. “Sorry,” he says again. “Did I, uh, get you pretty good?”

Mika’s furious bloodshot gaze glared back at him. “You—!” Without a second thought, Daisuke raised his fist again. Just when it came down, black, wispy tendrils surrounded Mika until they consumed him, and he was gone without a trace, as if the ground itself had swallowed him. Daisuke doubled over in pain when he punched the cobblestones instead, clutching his hand and spitting out a few incoherent curses. Still stunned, Obito reeled in the kyoketsu-shoge’s chain, unable to take his eyes off where his cousin had been. It wasn’t until Daisuke let out a fifth “fuck” that he could look away, and crouched beside his partner to check on him. It was too dark to see if he’d broken any skin, but judging by the way things felt, he’d pulled back just enough to prevent an injury to his hand.

After returning my book to its proper place, I lingered among the Tenement Records. Their dusty spines were labeled by ranges of dates, arranged in backwards chronological order: Year 351-355, Year 346-350, Year 341-345, and so on. I wasn’t quite sure what I was looking for. But I picked up the oldest volume and began reading the first entry. “Day One.” The looping words were written in faded brown ink. “On this day it was decided that a record should be kept of all the notable doings in the Tenement, so to preserve our history for posterity. We begin the counting of days at One, for none of us knows how long the Tenement has existed before today.” I skipped ahead a few pages, skimming the words for anything promising: dark halls, strangers, outsiders, Back Door, Lazarus. “Need help finding something, Noah?” At the end of the aisle, Mr. Gellar the Librarian stood watching me. I slipped the book of records back onto the shelf. “Uh—no, just browsing.” “You sure?” he asked. “Because you know, if you do need help, I would be the one to ask. I know this Library better than I know my own apartment.” “Well...” I hesitated. Then, deciding to take a chance, I reached into my pocket and pulled out the Nwissy. “Actually, could you help me find out what this thing is?”

I realize I am now a threat to her reputation. If these other girls see Mel hanging out in the dark, alone with me, the social ramifications could be dire. I can’t do that to her. I flick away the end of blunt so the other girls cannot have it. Then I slowly melt backwards into the darkness. It only takes a few steps before I am indiscernible from any other teenage boy.

It wasn’t the only thing she hated. True to his word, the Sinnlenst had provided a bath – a hot one, even, which had felt a whole lot better than she was ever going to admit to him – and a change of clothes. But, because he clearly felt he hadn’t been enough of a bastard already, the change of clothes in question was a dress. It was, all things considered, a fairly reasonable dress – he’d not gone out of his way to get something utterly hideous or horrifically badly made, and the colour wasn’t far from what she normally wore. It was even approximately her size, which was worryingly thoughtful of him. But it was still a damn dress. *‘More becoming to your sex’ indeed. Bastard.* It wasn’t that she objected to dresses on principle – hells, they looked damn good on some people (and off them, she amended, as the memory of a particular ex-girlfriend sprang to mind). But they weren’t for her, and, more to the point, she’d be damned if some arrogant speciesist sexist bastard of a blackmailer was going to get her into one just to make himself feel better about the fact he’d originally mistaken her for a boy. “I’m not sodding wearing that,” she said, out loud. No response. “Either you give me my clothes back-” *fat chance of that. Bet they’re going through them for anything I might be smuggling in.* “-or I’ll walk out of here naked. Your choice.”

The arrow that embedded itself in the crate behind him kind of made his point invalid. “So, leaving now?” he asked. “It might be a little late for that, if they have archers in place,” Mikiva replied. “Go left, that alley has some cover. Maybe we can lose them.” “What do you think the chances of that are?” Av’ry asked as they scrambled for the alley. “After they’ve already fired a shot? Very poor. Their men are all in position or they wouldn’t have made their move. I imagine they’ve been watching us for some time now, waiting for the right moment.” “So, this should be fun then,” Av’ry replied sarcastically. “Just shut up and run,” the dark-haired spy advised curtly.

Fox has a slightly complicated relationship with water.

Her powers are fire-based, but that doesn't make water a problem. Often quite the contrary, as water is excellent at absorbing heat, and she sometimes needs to dissipate a lot of it in a way that won't hurt anyone🧵

Another time, she might have let the Major’s words slide off her. Another time, she might have been wounded by Brayker’s charges and worried she was disgracing herself and her name. But on this night, Katrina only felt black rage bubble in her gut. “That so, Major?” she said, standing up. “You don’t like that I’m not all you dreamed I am? You don’t like that I’m not the great hero you believed me to be? Tell you what, why don’t you spend your whole life fighting to free your kingdom from a madman. Then, when you finally kill the bastard, you get to watch while a plague consumes your home and kills everyone in it. You watch everything you fought and hoped for choke to death on their own blood, then tell me how fucking heroic you feel after!”
