He squinted, pretending to think it over. His eyes gleamed in that Kazuo-ish way that made you feel like he knew exactly who he was and exactly who you were and exactly how to come out on top no matter what. It was his card-playing look. Everyone always hated playing cards with Kazuo. He loved it that they hated it. “Alright, Noah.” He stroked his chin. “How about this? You go in there, mm, ten paces? And I’ll let you keep the Nwissy for a week.” “Five paces, and I keep the Nwissy for good.” He winced. “Oh now, Noah. If you’re going to be that way about it, we can just forget it. I don’t care about you going in there that much.” “You guys!” Jon growled. “I really don’t think anyone should be—!” “Alright, fine,” I backpedaled. “How about I go in... twelve paces, and you let me keep the Nwissy for... a month?” “Deal!” We shook on it.

- Brother’s Keeper, book one of my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power.
They skirted the lake's edge until it opened to the River, and as they picked their way along the bank, he stubbornly held his peace. She would have to begin, for she had imposed the silence between them. Not the strained, stilted ache of these passing minutes, but rather the long silence of WEEKs tense and drenched with the unsaid, heavy as a mudslide about to dislodge. Now that silence weighted his steps, sucking him into a morass of confusion. At times the aching sparkle of the River threatened to pull him free, and then a shaft of sunlight would set her hair afire. Just when he thought himself slain by the need to touch it, she veered from the sun-drizzled bank into the brooding Forest shadows. Brother's Keeper A.C. Turek

With a nod from the queen, Miatiy gestured for Nitara to come closer. She did, and she looked into the Font of Insight, an ornate silver bowl fitted atop a chalice-shaped glass platform and filled with dark water. Squiggles rippled from one side of the basin to the other. Nitara frowned at them. She had not spent much time with the Fountain, certainly not as much as the High Priestess or the queen, but she knew that was not normal behaviour. “Earlier this week, I sensed an anomaly in the Veil. The Font showed me these shapeless forms, but I could not understand what they meant. I thought it could be an enchantment Aunt Pryaik had set up during her time as High Priestess, so I checked her notebooks. And I found it.” Miatiy swallowed, her gaze wandering towards the Font as if she expected a monster to emerge from it at any moment. “During the Bloody Year, she cast a tracking spell, and now it’s giving off a signal. I swear I reviewed her notes a hundred times, and they match with the forms in the water.” She took a deep breath, her eyes remaining closed for a moment, then she said, “Datusha is back.”

There’s still a lot of details that need to be fleshed out first, and at the first sign of fuckery, we’re out! Do you understand?” “Perfectly, although I’m not entirely sure on what ‘fuckery’ would entail exactly,” Rondu comments. “I’ll tell you later,” Driona says and stands up off of the couch, in which she has created a sizeable divot. “I still have your box communicator thingy, I’ll let you know when we’re available for a tour of these facilities, should be a week after we get back to our homes to move some things around. And you!” Joey says, pointing to me. “Who, me?” “Yes, you! Day after tomorrow, dinner at our house! No blowing it off this time! We have things that need discussing!” “I’m making pot pie!” Warren says cheerfully, and my mouth instantly starts to water. Cynthia’s eyes roll, but she has half a smile plastered on her face as she does so. “Well twist my rubber arm why don’t you?” I say and stand up off of my chair. As first meetings go, this could have gone worse…

“Oh, hey! That’s not fair!” The voice of the creature howled as Parsimony brought it closer to Boulder, who shook Dollop at it. “I’ve done my bit. By lore, you’re supposed to let me go!” The creature struggled, but Boulder would bet on Parsimony’s knitting skills over any possibly murderous fae creature any day of the week. Except Sundays. She never knitted on Sundays. There was always far too much to do. She held the creature in a tight grip and no matter how much he struggled, he wasn’t getting away from Boulder’s dear wife. He knew that feeling. Not that he had ever even considered getting away. Well, perhaps once, at eight years old, but it was surprising how fast an eight year old can accept the inevitability of a future marriage with the right kind of stare boring into him. Pippy had inherited that stare.

Although she knew it wouldn’t be him, she almost expected to see the Jackal. In her mind, she could only imagine someone seeking to torture her as the lowest, most disgusting and hideous creature to walk the land. A decrepit and wretched thing with a leering smile. She expected greasy hair and pock-marked skin riddled with sores and scars. Crooked yellow and black teeth and bloodshot eyes … smelling of filth and alcohol … The door creaked open, and she braced herself. She took deep breaths and pushed away her terror and tears. No matter who or what came for her, she refused to cry. No matter what he might do, he would not take her dignity from her. She was still Cassandra Synclaire, and she would not cry. The metal door shut and standing before her wasn’t the Jackal or a deformed beast. It was a man. He appeared to be in his forties, maybe fifties, and his narrow face was plain, if a little stretched looking. He had an average build, and aside from the white smock, leather apron and black gloves, an almost regal look to him. His hair was slicked back and well groomed, but thin. She could see his scalp through it. He looked like someone her father would’ve known and disliked for how boring he was.

She's all blues as she runs up to him and grabs him in a hug so hard, I'm worried she's going to rearrange his bones. "Okay, that was weird." She laughs. He can't laugh, but his mouth and chest make the motions anyway, his eyes dancing. She shoves me playfully. "You didn't want to tell me Nico was back at school?" "I just found out he was coming this morning, and I have other things to think about. Where's my post-New Year's resolution slash pre-Valentine's Day crowd?" "Oh, you know they'll swarm us during lunch." "They better." I'm counting on the money we make this season. I only have one semester before graduation, and this is my best chance to build up the money I need to get out of here. "Once Queen K uses your services..." She spins her lock. "You know she's dying to. She can't be single for the Valentine's Day dance. They're selling tickets next week. I think she's actually on the dance committee and how would that look? There's no way she'll go the whole day without finding out her match. Who do you think it is?" "I can't just pull these things out of midair." She pouts. "It's fun to speculate before you know. A promise to share her thoughts unfiltered was not what he wanted, but Tokonus had to admit that it was progress. That did not mean that she was off the hook. Moving in on her, he placed his hands on her waist and pulled his lady close. “I trust you, I’ll let you have your way – but don’t make me ask later. I wouldn’t want any static to build up between us now.” Tok moved to deliver a kiss to Othelia’s forehead but was impeded by a row of her fingers. “Now Lord Tokonus, just because we are alone does not mean you can perform in just any fashion. I promise I will tell you what you want to know, but we must have decorum when we are together.” Othelia gave him a gentle smile as if to show that she was not rejecting him entirely, but the lady did not give in either. “Besides, we’re not done. I said before that we could not accept the offered terms without conditions and I meant that.” The Lukshen lord accepted the rejection on the outside gracefully but was not as well put together inside. The comfort that came from their new physical relationship wasn’t something that he had ever experienced and now he wanted more. Othelia was correct to say that they had other business, but that didn’t stop him from wanting to ignore it. There would always be another problem, another task. Silently, he threw his tantrum, but verbally he agreed. “That you did, which can only mean that you have already come up with what you would ask for in return.”

Av’ry had been walking ahead, sweeping the torch over the floor, but suddenly he stopped and held his arm out, halting them both. “What is it?” Fox asked. “Look for yourself.” He held the torch out in front of him. She followed his gaze into the seemingly bottomless chasm in front of them. “Ah, yes. I had wondered if we would see another one of these.” The shaft that descended into the mountain was much like the one back in Cillvala; this had clearly been the dragons’ preferred method of transit between floors. “It seems like the previous occupants had little use for stairs or ladders, unfortunately,” Av’ry said. “And no one got in before us to set up bridges, this time.” Mikiva sighed. “Good thing we came prepared.” Fox dropped her pack and retrieved the thick coils of rope. We just need to find something to affix this to, and hopefully we can drop down to the lower levels.” “And what if we need to get across?” Mikiva asked. “How about we build that bridge when we get to it, huh?” Fox replied.

“Lissen ‘ere, copper. You don’t like me, an’ I don’t like you, but Miss Eedith’s dahn there, and M’str’ss Hurkull, too, and if’n you don’t get up off your lazy arse and …” Welling dragged Nygel away. Then pushed him further away. Nygel pointed a finger around Welling. “… I’ll give you what for, you …” Welling pressed a hand against Nygel’s mouth before he said something that only made everything worse. This was going so very badly and Welling had to wonder if it wasn’t just some exercise in futility. Maybe they were already dead? Then he’d only be wasting his time here when he could be back at the flop house to see if he’d become destitute. He’d have to start again, build up his store of information, rebuild his trust among the criminal element. Or, and this made him feel sick, get a job. “Murple Hurkull, you say?” Brohdee’s fingers drummed on the desk surface. “My, my. Murple Hurkull.”

Noah just has a few questions about this place...

From chapter 1 of #Tenement, my dystopian mystery about people living in an infinite building.
“Noah Boy,” she’d say to me, pinching my ear. “They’ll really be after you. You think all those bad thoughts—makes you as tasty to them as a chocolate truffle.” I didn’t exactly know what a chocolate truffle was. (According to legend, Nan Enokido had once stumbled across one in an empty room when she was a young woman, and had spent the rest of her life hoping to find another.) But I knew what she meant. She always said things like that to me, especially when I would get into one of what my father called my “why moods.” Why hasn’t anyone ever tried going all the way to the end of the Tenement? I’d ask. Or, Why do we even have a Front Door if we’re not allowed to open it? Why don’t we ever see the Landlord? How do we know there’s really nothing outside of the Tenement? If the Tenement’ll fall apart without the Rules, then why didn’t the Landlord just build it better in the first place? “Noah.” My father would sigh at my questions. “Please stop.” I didn’t mean any harm. But those questions were always popping into my head. If someone had given me some good answers, I would have stopped asking.

Some of the aliens try to speak to me. “I don’t understand?” I say out loud to the nearest one, another centaur person with a more slender build. Sirens start blaring from where I came from, I think. The sirens were a much lower pitch than I’d expect and remind me of elephants for some reason. A spike of fear shoots through me and I bolt into the crowd again in the opposite direction. The aliens cry out in alarm and make way from in front of me, trying to avoid physical contact. The next handful of minutes pass by in a blur as I run. I don’t know where. I don’t know why. I just run. I run from the fountain square to strange roads loaded with alien pedestrians and even stranger plants, purple and orange and blue and anything but green, and into a new large square, this one with three statues in the middle of more alien figures.
