Great question. I think none of the crew are used to surprises, and the type that happen are generally unwelcome.
But I wrote a scene today with a surprise that they liked. So I think that they like nice surprises.

Sadly my world villains are predictably corporations who essentially run governments.
However, not heavily dealt with for this book (maybe more book two) there is a shadowy force that operates outside of those structures and did something terrible to turn that tide.

Boringly, the house, the pets and plants are quite safe. Maybe a small gathering of a few friends with a couple of beers, but they are quite a sensible lot. Toren can smoke outside.
