So, here is Fox meeting her half-brother for the first time.

“Why? Who are you, exactly?”
He glared at her, overflowing with quiet malice. “You know I waited for her return every day? I never gave up hope, even after years had passed.
“When I was old enough, I became a scout, to search for her. Anything to keep from believing that she was gone. That she had abandoned me.
“But then you show up instead. And I get to learn the ‘truth’ thirdhand. Tell me, is that fair, outsider? Is it? Because to me, this all seems like a cruel joke.”
Fox stared at him for a long moment, not understanding. “Abandoned? By who…?” And then she realized. “Oh. Shit.”
His mouth set into a thin line. “You didn’t know?”
“My mother… she didn’t really talk about her life before. I think it hurt her too much.”
“A convenient excuse. Maybe you simply aren’t who you claim to be.”
“I have proven that. Why would I lie about the rest?”
“A good question.” His stare bored holes into her.
Fox met his eyes, giving him what he asked for. “Everything I said was true. Iella was my mother and I’m sorry you had to find out this way. About her death.”

November 18th – retrograde (backwards)

Some of Mikiva’s old assassin friends have turned up for a visit.

“We were not being especially subtle in our search, Av’ry. We could have easily drawn their attention and led them right to her. We need to find someplace safe. Preferably quickly.”
“Don’t you think you are being a bit paranoid? No one even knows where we…” Av’ry turned back towards Mikiva, fully intending to finish his thought, but instead she shoved him backwards, hard.
The arrow that embedded itself in the crate behind him kind of made his point invalid.
“So, leaving now?” he asked.
“It might be a little late for that, if they have archers in place,” Mikiva replied. “Go left, that alley has some cover. Maybe we can lose them.”
“What do you think the chances of that are?” Av’ry asked as they scrambled for the alley.
“After they’ve already fired a shot? Very poor. Their men are all in position or they wouldn’t have made their move. I imagine they’ve been watching us for some time now, waiting for the right moment.”
“So, this should be fun then,” Av’ry replied sarcastically.
“Just shut up and run,” the dark-haired spy advised curtly.

“You think I am self-destructive?” Av’ry asked.
“You spend too much time with me to be anything else. I am not a healthy person to be around, my friend.”
“You can’t really believe that.”
“No? Why not? Look at where we are. What we’re doing. Would a sane person follow me here?” Fox had an uncomfortably good point. “I probably would have done you a service if I really had left you behind. Gotten out of your life. Would have been safer for you.”
He had to ask. “Why didn’t you?”
“Selfishness, I guess.” She shrugged. “I’d miss you. Sometimes it’s hard to do the right thing.”
“Hey.” Av’ry put a hand on her shoulder, turning her back to face him.
“We should keep going.” She tried to pull away, but he stopped her.
“It can wait a second. I need you to hear this.” He took a breath. “This might not be the right time, but I really don’t see us having this conversation again, so just listen to me, alright?”
She nodded absently.
“Good. Because this is important: I am not a child. And I’m not an idiot. I know what we do is dangerous. I chose to be here. Which, by my math, makes me no more self-destructive than you. Not that that is a high bar to clear, frankly. And if you ever try ditching me for my ‘safety’, I swear I will hunt you down, whatever the risks, if only to kick your ass when I find you. Understand me?”

November 16th – run

I looked at the wound. It actually wasn’t that bad, a clean shot that had skimmed the fatty part of the thigh. Just a graze, really. It was bleeding as much as you’d expect but probably hadn’t done too much real damage.
If he’d been able to run here on it, it would probably be fine, assuming he didn’t lose too much more blood.
“Just keep pressure on it. It doesn’t look that serious.”
“Well, it hurts like hell,” he complained.
“It is a gunshot wound. Of course it hurts.”
He didn’t seem to have anything to say to that, but he was starting to look a little grey. Hopefully, that was the adrenaline crash and not the blood loss. Keeping him alert and talking would be best.
“Ok, I need you to tell me the rest. Everything you were going to tell Cooper. And who would have killed him for it.”
“It’s kind of a long story.”
“I’m not going anywhere. Maybe you could start by telling me who you are?”
“Oh, I’m so sorry.” He blushed slightly, which was a good sign on the blood loss front. “Simon Vale.”

The Malazan Book of the Fallen series is standout epic fantasy to me.

It has an expansive, but compelling, cast and the story follows many branches that weave together in fascinating ways.

I found myself particularly invested in the characters.

November 15th – progress

It isn’t easy to get Fox this angry, but her half-brother has made a valiant effort.

The obnoxious, spoiled jackass didn’t even know what suffering was. And part of her was dying to demonstrate for him. It wasn’t like he didn’t deserve it. He had poisoned her. Who would blame her?
For a moment, Fox allowed the fantasy, stoked the righteous fury that had kindled in her blood. Unbidden, or at least unconsciously bidden, flames began to dance across her clenched fists, bright in the dim tunnels. And for just an instant, she could see what she would do to him, so clear that she could taste it, feel it, smell it.
It was the smell that stopped her cold. She would never forget the sickly-sweet stench of burning flesh, never forget the first time… Tendrils of fear constricted her heart like a vice, strangling the anger, crushing it into nothingness. The flames died instantly.
Whatever progress she had made, Fox still feared herself more than anything else. She likely always would.

“I know. But don’t worry; we go through dry patches like this sometimes. We’ll find more soon, I am sure.” Carmine smiled.
“Easy for you to say, you aren’t the one working hundred-hour weeks.”
Carmine shrugged. “We just have to cast a wider net. We will find people. And if we don’t, we can reach out to the other enclaves, maybe they have some to spare.”
“I hope so. I need a vacation. Somewhere sunny.” I wasn’t holding out hope; the other enclaves were probably no better off than we were.
“Wouldn’t that be nice?” Carmine commiserated. “Somewhere with nude beaches, maybe.”
“Don’t you get enough nudity in your day-to-day life?”
“You can never really have enough nudity.”
I sighed. “I’m going to the target range. I’ll see you later, Carmine.”
The incubus turned and sauntered off. I watched him go. He carried himself with the easy grace and assurance of a practiced predator, which he was, in a way, so perhaps that wasn’t surprising. But maybe it was why I always had trouble turning my back on him. Once he was out of sight, I continued on my way to the basement.

November 13th – build

Av’ry, Fox, and Mikiva explore a draconic ruin.

Unfortunately, it isn’t really designed for humans to navigate it.

Av’ry had been walking ahead, sweeping the torch over the floor, but suddenly he stopped and held his arm out, halting them both.
“What is it?” Fox asked.
“Look for yourself.” He held the torch out in front of him.
She followed his gaze into the seemingly bottomless chasm in front of them. “Ah, yes. I had wondered if we would see another one of these.”
The shaft that descended into the mountain was much like the one back in Cillvala; this had clearly been the dragons’ preferred method of transit between floors.
“It seems like the previous occupants had little use for stairs or ladders, unfortunately,” Av’ry said.
“And no one got in before us to set up bridges, this time.” Mikiva sighed.
“Good thing we came prepared.” Fox dropped her pack and retrieved the thick coils of rope. We just need to find something to affix this to, and hopefully we can drop down to the lower levels.”
“And what if we need to get across?” Mikiva asked.
“How about we build that bridge when we get to it, huh?” Fox replied.

Jessica prodded my facial bruise gently; I resisted the urge to bat her hand away. “Lift your shirt, I want to see your abdomen.”
“Here, in the hall?”
Jessica just scowled at me. I did as I was told. She shook her head at the bruise running from left to right across my chest, where the seat belt had been, then examined my stomach and ribs. Finally satisfied, she stepped away, and I lowered my shirt.
“You were lucky. This could have been much worse,” she said.
“That’s me, lucky. I didn’t even get a new scar for my collection. Now, your concern is touching, everyone.” I moved to step past them; they had had enough fun. “But I should really get back to work…”
“No, you shouldn’t.” Jim stepped in front of me.
I gave him a questioning look.
“Go home, Rayna. Take Terry’s advice. Get some rest, recover.”
“I’m fine. A bit stiff. It’s not a big deal. I can take another case,” I protested.
“No, you cannot. There aren’t any cases for you right now. You are going to take the weekend off. If I see you back here before Monday, I will have you forcibly escorted out of the building. Do you understand me?” James raised an eyebrow.

November 11th – burger (sandwich)

“Think he’ll be able to find out what’s happening in this town?”
“You know him too well to need to ask that.” Fox laughed.
“True. It’s nice that the three of us are finding our rhythm.” “Finding more than just rhythm.” Av’ry deposited a tray on the table. “Steak sandwiches and cider.”
“Bless you.” Mikiva gulped the hot cider, trying to banish the chill from her bones. “And gossip, I hope?”
“Obviously.” He took a bite of his sandwich and slid into the chair next to her. “The front is a few dozen kilometers from here. Neither side has ventured this far into the marshlands to conquer the little villages yet. Maybe they never will. Not much tactical value here.
“But there are scouts from both sides skulking around. Asking questions. They’ve put wanted posters up in the town square. Two guesses who is on them.”
“Should we be moving on, then?” Mikiva asked.
Av’ry shrugged. “Kitsa gave me the impression that the town is deeply uninterested in helping either side. The flyers were defaced pretty thoroughly the day they went up and no one has paid much attention since. As long as we don’t draw attention to ourselves, we should be fine for the night.”
“Wouldn’t asking about it draw attention?”
“Not the way I do it.” Av’ry grinned his best boyish grin.

Something strange is happening at an invite-only party for the nobility in a newly renovated temple.

“You won’t get into the party as a servant,” Av’ry noted.
“All the better. I never really liked social gatherings,” Fox agreed. “But it will get me inside the temple. Following local custom, the servants will escort their masters inside, then they will be ushered into a small antechamber where they typically gamble and drink to pass the time.
“No one will be watching that room too closely, servants are not a threat, after all. Once I get in, I’m hoping I can sneak out and find those underground tunnels. See what they uncovered down there.”
“If they were able to get down there at all,” Av’ry said.
“They were,” Fox replied confidently. “There was something in there that they wanted. They wouldn’t have stayed if they didn’t think they could get to it, and they wouldn’t be opening to people now if they didn’t have it. Whatever they were looking for, they found it and they are ready to move on to the next stage.”
“The next stage? What exactly would that be?” Av’ry asked.
“No idea. It is obvious that they are planning something, and this is a part of it. The details will be your job.” She gestured to the two of them. “You’ll need to mingle, ask questions. See what the nobles there know about why they were summoned.”

I loved Anne McCaffrey novels growing up. Dragonflight was a favorite as I loved Lessa.

She was a survivor who became a dragonrider and heroine who took great risks for her people and made discoveries crucial to her world. Also, time travel!

Av’ry nodded. “I understand. I’ll do what I can. Do you want to talk about all of this? Your mother’s husband, her son?”
“Not even a little bit.”
“How did I know?”
“You’re very clever.” Fox rolled her eyes.
“So, when are we doing this?” he moved on.
“Whenever you’re ready.”
“Then just let me finish my coffee, and we can go. I can’t wait to meet your brother.”
Fox kicked him in the shin. “Don’t be an ass.”
“What can I say? I play to my strengths.” Av’ry grinned.
“He isn’t my brother. He isn’t anything except a complication, and the sooner I deal with him, the better.”
“You sure you want to intervene at all, here?”
“No. But I am sure I don’t want to be responsible for the death of every blood relative I have. They aren’t much, but still.”
“Fox…”
“Don’t. It doesn’t matter if it’s my fault or not. It’s all I’ve been able to think about all night. I can’t have that thought in my head forever.”

November 7th – movement

Leaning over the edge, she could see the dim green light bobbing down below, swaying back and forth with the movement of the rope. Finally, the creaking stopped.
“Hey, Fox!” Av’ry’s voice drifted up from the pit. “Next time we should bring a longer rope.”
“Can you make it?” she called down.
“Yeah. But getting back up is going to be interesting.”
“We’ll figure something out. Just go for it.”
The rope swung wildly for an instant, then she heard a grunt, followed by a crash and emphatic cursing.
“Alright!” Av’ry shouted. “Your turn. And don’t worry, I cleared some debris out of the way for you.”
“Did you do it with your face?”
“Just get down here,” he snapped.
Fox wrapped the rope around her leg and slipped over the edge.

“Don’t blame yourself for that. In fact, I should thank you for saving my life.”
Mikiva pushed him away. “Void, why are you being so nice to me? Why do you even care?”
Av’ry gave her a puzzled look. “Why wouldn’t I? We’re partners, aren’t we?”
“We are?”
“Of course. We have the same goal, we are in this together, that makes us partners.”
“You still say that, even though I’ve been treating you like shit this whole time?”
Av’ry shrugged. “You aren’t the first, you won’t be the last. Some of my best friends have treated me like shit, at one time or another. You had my back today when it counted, that’s what matters. You don’t have to like me. My ego will survive, I promise.”
Mikiva hesitated. “I don’t dislike you.” She sounded frustrated. Scowling, she reached for the right words. “Not now, anyway. I mean I did, at first, but we kind of got off on the wrong foot, didn’t we? And I can’t say I am happy about the situation we are in, but that isn’t your fault. I know I’ve been taking my frustrations out on you, though. I shouldn’t have. But I thought I knew your type, and I thought you deserved it.”
“My type?” He raised an eyebrow.
“Surely you realize that you have a reputation?”

Fox is... a fox 😁 She is quick, clever, a little bit devious, and has red hair.

Av'ry is a black-footed cat. Tiny, adorable, charismatic, but surprisingly dangerous.

Ray is a badger. Tough and scrappy, but subtle and unassuming at first glance.
