Snow and wind continued pounding the small post beside Lake Just’s gate. Inside, Privates Trent, Gibbons and Marley stood huddled by the small stove, struggling to keep warm and waiting for their shift to end. The coffee helped, but there was only so much of the slop one could drink in a single sitting. Marley kept to himself, but to pass the time, Gibbons and Trent discussed important matters: “That broad that showed up tonight had some body on her, eh?” “I don’t know,” Trent replied. “I guess. I didn’t really notice.” “Trust me, fella. I patted her down.” He shook his head and whistled. “Like a statue.” “If you say so. Kinda grim looking, if you ask me.” “Nah, see, I like that. I like the gloomy ones.” He grinned and nodded, as if speaking some universal truth, but Trent shrugged and sipped from his coffee. “I’ll tell you one thing: that was some beast she had with her. Lady must be hard to ride around on that thing.” “I think when our shift ends, I might go find her. See if she wants to warm up in my bunk, if you follow.” “You’re a jackass, Gibbons.”

Chapter 1 of the mystery.
Talia gazes out over southern Illinois from the St Louis arch, thinking about the setting at the heart of the next 27 chapters.
The largest pre-Columbian construction on the continent north of Mexico, no written history remains of the city, abandoned centuries before Europeans colonized the region. It was rarely, if ever, covered in standard history curriculums in the US, which tended to overlook anything but western, European-centered subjects. Some might quaintly call it a hidden treasure, as if it were some darling local diner with excellent coffee and not a striking and fundamental part of global history. Talia had to ask herself, if it was a hidden treasure, who benefited from hiding it for so long? Agitated and having had her fill of the monumental tourist trap, she marched to the boarding area and waited to be taken down to the ground again. ***

A wave of energy rippled through the air. Wispy ropes of purple and black burst from Kanashimi’s clawed hand, restless and roiling until they amassed into a more circular form, which then rose slightly above the demon’s palm. As the tangled shadowy vines solidified into a glossy globe, Lady Shadow’s heart plummeted. Something wasn't right. “Kagura,” the demon began; a lump lodged in her throat—they’d never used that name with her before.“My resentment has grown so immense lately, it’s nearly unbearable. I fear I may not be able to control it much longer.”

They stretched out their hands to her, and she brushed their fingers. “I am Mu’u Jasana,” she said. “I am the True Sea Mother, the one you heard prophesied of. I know how many of you have suffered in the dark, but you are free now. I have set you free. The false Sea Mother Mireia imprisons her children, and that is how you know she is false. But I am the bringer of freedom and hope. That is how you know I am true. “For far too long, the corrupt elites of this land have convinced you to follow weak impostors. They’ve told you that Atalantis must remain isolated, that our power is something to be hidden away and ashamed of. But the truth is the opposite: your power is a gift! You are my children, the firstborn of the Sun and Sea, and you were never meant to stay hidden away on this lonely island. You were meant to claim dominion over the whole world and all its lesser creatures. This is the great destiny that was always intended for you, but it has been thwarted by small people who want to hoard power for themselves.” Murmurs of righteous anger swelled through the rebels at these words. Jasana, reaching the far end of the room, climbed up onto a table and turned to her people. Though she was small, she towered, a figure of natural power and charisma. It was impossible to look away from her. “Swear your loyalty to me,” she told them. “Promise to follow me to the end of your days, and I will lead you to your destiny!”

Shaken, Jedhrath turned toward the camp. As his heart began to thaw, he dreaded the prospect of hours alone. After the ecstasy of union with everyone and everything, his actual detachment from others— his discreteness as an entity-depressed him, made him terribly lonely, and filled him with homelonging so overwhelming he felt he might collapse in the snow. To distract himself he looked for familiar faces, but all he could see were Lord Shelwon's receding back and Ra'am Chalmalch's baleful eyes. What was wrong? The Ra'am had kept it out of the prayers and rites, but Jedhrath could tell by his stare and the set of his mountainous shoulders that all was not well, that he was displeased; and that the object of his displeasure was the man on whom the hope of the ENTIRE WORLD of Rhadhallon rested. On her way across the city, the modest elegance of the Parc des Temps captured Briaca’s attention. Cypress and pomegranate trees and beds of white mulberries garlanded the park whose smaller scale meant little before its open-air exhibition of global curiosities: a decorative replica of a pyramid from Kemet (many of the real ones had melted during the Vengeance), a compact yurt from Tourkia, a pond surrounded by lilies with a tiny pagoda at its centre gifted by Kinézika allies. None of it was the real thing, yet Briaca enjoyed strolling through the park and imagining what life was like in those places she had never been to. As a decorated soldier of Aphrodite, she had travelled across and beyond Soliakó, but brandishing the sword in the name of the Mother Goddess left little time to explore. And when she did… well, not everyone showed a willingness to talk to her. Zoé once blamed it on all the fresh blood on her armour and sword, but that couldn’t be it. Briaca always made sure to smile at them! Why would they be scared?

“Cassia said the realms are like two sides of the same coin,” Chloe says. “So where exactly on the globe are we?” Marine takes another swallow of her drink and smiles. “Miterios can only survive in places where the natural balance hasn’t been destroyed in the Other Realm. Poetic, isn’t it? Osse is around the Gobi Desert, Pleumon in the Amazon, and Podia around the Great Barrier Reef. And in the Sun Federation, Kheir is in southern Africa, and Rhakhis is spread across Iceland and Greenland.” Understanding dawns on me. I’ve seen enough maps of national parks and wildlife preservation areas to know that there are swaths of protected lands in those places. “And Kardia,” Marine continues, “is mostly in Alaska.” My eyes go round. My stomach drops. I whip my gaze around to Chloe, who stares at me with her mouth ajar. Alaska. Where my father’s body was inexplicably found. Where my father disappeared to after declaring he was returning home. The world beyond the bark. The reading. I must return home. It can’t just be a coincidence. I down the rest of my drink. And even if I don’t yet have the proof, my brain’s already chanting: My father lived in Kardia.

Aubergine desperately trying to regain the psychic bond to his best friend who he last knew was thousands of miles away and captured by an enemy army
Silence deeper than death. Quieter than the Hollow Void. He meditated, allowing his mind to fly free through the dominion, to soar with eagles and albatrosses, then dive like a cormorant into Deep Sea and descend with megamobulas and anglerfish, to explore parallel realities and dominions that his body could not enter. All in search of the one life—the one soul—that contained within it the entirety of Aubergine’s universe. Iom’ren… Aubergine’s heart leapt so hard it choked him. Out loud, but with the low frequency voice that only Subrikae could speak or hear, he said the name of his friend. To anyone who might have heard him—if they could hear him over the droning organ—it would have sounded like a cat’s purr. Aubergine drawn by Flare Aubergine from the Good Thyme Inn books. A dark-skinned man dressed all in purple, sitting at a bar with wine and grapes. He has jewels in his face and stunning pink eyes almost hidden in the shade of his hat. Behind him is the dining room area and a hearth fire burning with green flame. The way his eyes are glowing under the shade of his hat gives him an ethereal, otherworldly presence. He is a gorgeous, mysterious man.

Writing snippet: “Do you think there are other worlds out there, Shrimp? Ones where they got it right the first time over? I like to think there are. That maybe somewhere there's another girl and her uhh”—she elbowed him in the ribs and he shied away, grinning—“trusty sidekick.” She chuckled once, but the smile slipped from her face as she contemplated the distance between them and the heavens. “Only, they're dining on the best foods out there, maybe dancing in moonlit halls. Wearing clothes made of starlight…” She trailed off, and Shrimp turned to look at her. She glanced at him. “Okay, yeah, you're right, that may be a bit too much, but anything's possible out there in them other worlds, right? ‘Specially if it's in a different time.” She sighed and shook her head, but she met Shrimp's gaze—saw the frown digging between his brows—and offered a small, encouraging smile. “Well, I don't know if you dream, but that's what I see when I close my eyes at night.” She grabbed his hand and held tight. “All them silly renderings in the stars.”

At least, he supposed, there wasn’t any shortage of interesting things within eyesight to distract himself with. The vase on the mantelpiece, for example – small, unassuming, but inlaid with silver and blue lines which glinted in the weak sunlight as though there was starlight trapped within them. Or the blanket draped across the back of the chair Viola was sitting in – heavy white wool, decorated in red and black lines and patches which curved around each other to form a picture of a leaping orca every bit as real as the one painted on the wall behind the statue of the Three Brothers at the High Temple. *I wonder if that’s for prayer – I know some people use blankets in their rituals, and it sounds like the sort of thing yellow-eyes would do.* *Though I don’t think Viola’d be sitting on it if that was the case.* “Do I have something on my face?” “What? No.” “Then why’re you staring at me? I know you’re from up-country, but I’m pretty sure you’ve seen a werewolf before today.” Dammit. He knew she was trying to get under his skin, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t working. “I wasn’t looking at you. I was looking at the blanket.” *And that makes so much more sense. Gods, if she didn’t already think I was an idiot…* “What blank- oh, that.” She reached back, running a careful hand over the orca’s dorsal fin. “I think that’s from across the water, though don’t quote me on that.”

“That’s the Godswatch Tower,” Celeste said. “It still stands.” Opposite the black stone, about twenty yards past the clearing, was a massive tower. It stood alone in the field, like a lighthouse without an ocean, and appeared to be well over a hundred feet tall. The apex was a wide dome, making it resemble a giant scepter. The tower was old, but not ancient, and Krutch thought it peculiar any structure would be built in the open by itself. “There used to be a special crystal at the top that enabled the viewer to see vast distances,” the Dinah continued. “It was crafted to observe and study the stars. They built the tower out here where there would be no city light to interfere.” “I heard about that,” said Lamont. “Unfortunately, that’s also why the crystal got stolen.” “Yes,” she said. “I know there’s another tower closer to Ira, but that crystal’s not as strong as the original. It’s such a shame. Sometimes I don’t understand this country.” She sighed and shook her head. “Still … I always wanted see the top of the tower. Even without the crystal, I’m sure the view is gorgeous.”

Vashad, crouching near a riverbed, held his trowel near the compact soil that held a patch of riverspine. Carefully he loosened the stoney dirt around the roots, encouraging it to relinquish the green herbs to him. Humming to himself, he took his time dancing the hand shovel back and forth along the plants removing them one by one. Even when taking his time, it did not take long before he had the bundle cleaned of dirt and placed in his satchel. “Mhm...,” Vashad huffed out as he reviewed his list. Having checked off the riverspine with his writing coal, he realized he was about halfway through with his task. Raising a hand to shield his eyes, he took a peek at the position of the sun. “I’m moving far too quickly. Break time it is then.” Dusting off his hands against his thighs, he looked out over the creek. Underneath the surface of the crystal blue waters fish darted back in forth busily surviving within their aquatic civilization. They were no different from the people in his village, hurriedly moving between their shelters and their hunting grounds to meet their quotas. Eating and being eaten, keeping the balance of nature just as it was meant to be. Vashad did not envy them. Their destinies were set before they were ever hatched while he could swim against the currents at his leisure. “There you are Vash,” called a feminine voice from behind him, striking him from his thoughts. “What brings you out this way Woodli?” Vashad did not need to look back to confirm;he’d have recognized her voice anywhere. Rising to full height, he turned to her with a small smile, his way of showing that she was not unwelcome.

It sounds like something in fantasy stories about witches. Cauldrons bubbling, witches combining disgusting ingredients like "eye of newt" and "blood of a firstborn prince" or whatever. Real classic MacBeth or Hocus Pocus. Not the stuff of actual witches. Most magic is imperceptible to normies. You won't catch us pulling out a glass ball to talk to the spirits or center our chakras with crystals or telling your fortune with tea leaves. Some specialties do better with a hand motion or whispered words, but more powerful witches of those specialties don't even need those. No normie was going to spot Nico imbuing plants with power so that they'd grow faster and more vibrantly. The only reason normies know about my power is that I advertise it, at least the matchmaking portion. If I took anyone's hands in mine, I'd see their match, though my eventual pronouncement would out me quickly.

“Tell me why you want me in Engineering so urgently.” There was a pause before The Rec answered. “Logic and protocol demands it.” “That’s not all of it.” “It is.” “I’m going to deck two.” She turned left and started the slow plod across the deck. “I must insist that you continue to Engineering and restart the ship.” She smiled to herself without stopping and⁰ continued down the corridor. “I’ve started walking now. Sucks when you lose control of the situation huh?” “I’m afraid that this is not a moment for levity, Captain. I will be unable to continue providing assistance if you insist on not following protocol.” She continued on, passing the exposed pipe work that lined the corridor, here and there she noticed crystalised water droplets on the pipes. “You are starting to sound a little frayed there, Rec. I can continue on my own if you’re gonna keep being a bitch about it.” “Captain, I must insist that you stop treating me as an adversary. My only concern is maximising the potential preservation of life.”

It took him ten steps to reach the body. It felt like an eternity. The sound of the crowd faded, slowly, as he walked. Then the sound of his footsteps, ice crystals crunching under the hobnails of his boots, followed it into the silence, until all he could hear was his breathing and the slow, dull thudding of his own heartbeat in his ears. The edge of the sheet was frost-rimed, halfway rigid under his fingers, and it didn’t so much fold back as simply slide away, catching a little on the edge of the corpse’s brown, gold-pierced ear as it did so, and dislodging the swathe of long, thick black hair which had been lying across its grey-tinged face. He felt the bile rise in his throat but choked it down, forcing himself to look closer. He needed to be sure, after all. Nobody else could be. *The hair’s right. And the nose. And he does wear an earring, on occasion, though I’ve never seen him wearing one of that design. But… the skin’s wrong. Not the right shade at all, even accounting for exsanguination. There’re no scars, and I know those persist through magic. And enchantments can’t change the face* that *much. Not enough that there’d be no chance of my recognising him.* He sighed, slowly letting the tension drain from his jaw and shoulders as he finally, in the face of incontrovertible evidence, allowed himself to come to the obvious conclusion. *…It’s not him. Thank all the gods in the heavens, it’s not him.*

Writing snippet: She stood staring out at the crashing waves for a long time. She wasn't sure what she'd expected—crystal-clear water lapping at her ankles, warm and soothing, welcoming her with whatever secrets it held on its salty breath. This water was cold. She could tell without touching it. And some small part of her knew that if she waded in, she would never leave. Shrimp slipped his hand into hers and looked up at her. “Well, it ain't exactly what I thought,” she said, watching the gray waves slosh. “But it's still beautiful in its own way, isn't it?”
