“Ignore him he is hungover” Shasha said peeking in from the kitchenette “You hungover? I’ve never seen you hungover in my life. What did you get up to?” “Don’t ask me. I didn't even know he was going out. He did this on his own” Shasha said with slightly more anger than she meant to express. “Touchy subject” Zee said and took a seat next to Maraha on the couch. “What did you bring?” asked Maraha “Chips, popcorn, some wine and a silly romantic comedy. You know, typical girls' night. I guess you can join” “I feel so honored” “I got the real stuff” Shasha said, coming in with hamburgers and a large plate of fries. Almost as soon as she set them down Maraha grabbed for one and ate hardly. “Geeze, I guess someone needs some grease,” Zee said. She watched him eat, she noticed his hands. His knuckles were scraped, under his nails was dark. She looked him over again, he did not look hungover, he looked like he had been in a fight.

It’s nice that the three of us are finding our rhythm.” “Finding more than just rhythm.” Av’ry deposited a tray on the table. “Steak sandwiches and cider.” “Bless you.” Mikiva gulped the hot cider, trying to banish the chill from her bones. “And gossip, I hope?” “Obviously.” He took a bite of his sandwich and slid into the chair next to her. “The front is a few dozen kilometers from here. Neither side has ventured this far into the marshlands to conquer the little villages yet. Maybe they never will. Not much tactical value here. “But there are scouts from both sides skulking around. Asking questions. They’ve put wanted posters up in the town square. Two guesses who is on them.” “Should we be moving on, then?” Mikiva asked. Av’ry shrugged. “Kitsa gave me the impression that the town is deeply uninterested in helping either side. The flyers were defaced pretty thoroughly the day they went up and no one has paid much attention since. As long as we don’t draw attention to ourselves, we should be fine for the night.” “Wouldn’t asking about it draw attention?” “Not the way I do it.” Av’ry grinned his best boyish grin.

“Could you pass the sweet peppers?” “Of course.” Wren picked up the dish full of flame-red peppers that had been sliced and cooked down with sugar into a spicy relish and set it beside the acolyte’s plate, nudging his hand forward until he found the rim. “Help yourself, Miss Wren.” Spencer took the seat at the head of the table, close enough to kick or kiss if she leaned just a little to her right. The good brother placed a basket filled with freshly baked flatbreads by her elbow and one of the aunts, the stocky one who looked like she cracked walnuts with her bare hands –Anne– pushed a steaming platter of roast chicken towards her. Tension bled out of Wren as she reached for a circle of bread and began piling it high with chicken and peppers. For all the silver candlesticks and porcelain tea cups, this was a casual affair. No fancy forks for her to stumble over. “Go on, now Reggie.” The other aunt –Sylvia– Wren reminded herself, flapped a napkin at the ghost skull hovering over the chicken platter. “You’ve had your sniff.” The skull flared his eyes at Sylvia but floated obediently away, slow and meandering like a child sulking at being sent to bed early.

Nothing close to a burger in any of my WIPs, so here are some other "culinary delights" 😋

From Mem & Light's first meeting in #Charagma, my SFF dystopia where all people are marked saved or damned from birth.
While waiting for one of the attendants, Mem scanned the bar’s shelves. Not surprising, there were several bottles of what she assumed must be alcoholic drinks, some of which she recognized, many of which she didn’t. There were also a selection of various things that could be smoked, and the implements with which to smoke them. A moving carousel of decadent foods—sauce-slathered meats, sugary pastries, crepes drowning in gooey cheese—rotated in a perpetual circle in and out of the kitchen area and around where the guests were seated at the bar. People snatched up the dishes as they passed by. About half of the dishes, and half of the drinks in the patrons’ hands, were glowing with a faint light, infused with numen for the holiday. “Have you ever tried numen-infused food?” she asked Light. He shook his head. “Too pricey for me. You?” “A few times,” she replied, not wanting to admit that her family was rich enough to have it about once a month. “It’s amazing. Care to try a numen drink now? I’ll buy it for you.” As soon as the words were out of her mouth, she worried she might offend him by the offer. He did make a face at her, but not one of wounded pride—more of skeptical disgust. “You want to spend your money on that? What’s so special about it, anyway? I’ve never understood the appeal.” “It ‘illuminates the mind, awakens the body and refreshes the soul,’” she said. “Without the advertisement script, please. Does it actually taste better?” “It does!” “Oh, in what way?” “I can’t describe it,” she shrugged. “You’ll just have to try it.

“You won’t get into the party as a servant,” Av’ry noted. “All the better. I never really liked social gatherings,” Fox agreed. “But it will get me inside the temple. Following local custom, the servants will escort their masters inside, then they will be ushered into a small antechamber where they typically gamble and drink to pass the time. “No one will be watching that room too closely, servants are not a threat, after all. Once I get in, I’m hoping I can sneak out and find those underground tunnels. See what they uncovered down there.” “If they were able to get down there at all,” Av’ry said. “They were,” Fox replied confidently. “There was something in there that they wanted. They wouldn’t have stayed if they didn’t think they could get to it, and they wouldn’t be opening to people now if they didn’t have it. Whatever they were looking for, they found it and they are ready to move on to the next stage.” “The next stage? What exactly would that be?” Av’ry asked. “No idea. It is obvious that they are planning something, and this is a part of it. The details will be your job.” She gestured to the two of them. “You’ll need to mingle, ask questions. See what the nobles there know about why they were summoned.”

I’m in the middle of musing on the horrible possibility of going back home, and how I’d rather deep-throat a wasps nest, when my phone vibrates. I glance down to see a message from Joey. Knowing him, he’s inviting me to dinner tomorrow tonight, which is technically tonight. When was the last time I had a proper dinner? Oh, right, three weeks ago, when Brianna took me out on our first and last date. A nice local place and I even paid for my half. Probably shouldn’t have ordered the salmon, but then I thought I’d still have a job and I’d been saving up a bit. The salmon was great. The date… not so much.

Constance Blake seeks out a local place to help her new daughter born without a charagma.

“If I weren’t a law-abiding woman,” the midwife had said, after seeing Constance’s inconsolable horror at her child’s missing charagma, “I might be inclined to say I’d heard a rumor.” “A rumor?” Constance had asked, too distraught to catch the meaning of the woman’s tone, at first. “Only a rumor,” the midwife went on. “Of a place in St. Epiphany’s District known for changing fates, so to speak. But of course I’d never advise anyone to chase that rumor. We all know the law of El, don’t we, Mrs. Blake? We all know what’s to be done with a child like that.” Insane of her, to even make the insinuation—even with plausible deniability—knowing that the twins’ own father was currently away prosecuting forgers and secret Reprobates. Insane of Constance, too, to respond not by reporting the woman to the authorities, but instead by asking another question: “Where might a not law-abiding woman find this place?” St. Epiphany’s District. Five blocks east of the trolley station. An unassuming clockmaker’s shop across from a run-down chapel. Ask for a clock with an extra hour. The old woman behind the counter of the shop was busy polishing a crystal clock face when Constance uttered this question in a low, urgent burst. Constance had half-expected to get no response except confused laughter from the woman, or at the very least an odd look. But the woman’s expression remained still, and only a slight hesitation in her polishing gave away that the phrase meant something to her. “I’m afraid those clocks are only for our very needy customers,” she said after a moment. “We wouldn’t want to give them away to just anyone.”

“Bigger is… better, now isn't it?” Bert's voice strained before a deep, hollow thump hit the ground behind Mori, ending in a relieved exhale. A lighter thud soon followed, something like a heavy bag landing on ceramic. “I figured you'd want the space in there to work with.” “Bigger means I could be out longer, which is a risk. But… I suppose that could be a benefit this time,” Mori wondered aloud as he shifted on his heels to face Bert and the large ceramic bowl he'd dragged down from the second floor. “Oak and birch chips, incense, the long matches so you don't burn yourself further, and even a little pillow and blanket for when you inevitably fall over and sleep outside for the night,” Bert listed off the rest of what he'd gathered up, tallying each item on his fingers. “Did I miss anything?” “You know I don't need the incense, right?” “Yes, yes, but it just smells nice. It's for me, I'm babysitting you,” Bert let out an exaggerated whine while unpacking most of the bag and setting those items off to the side.

She walked silently over to the table, and stood in front of it, and Lucia. She placed her hands on the table, and looked Lucia directly in the eyes. “Hello there, miss. My name is Darlinna Mechanicane. I’m the head security officer on this Waystation.” Her emotionless mask loosened briefly, as grief showed on her features. “And now… the only security officer on this Waystation. Do you know where you are, miss?” Lucia stared blankly for several seconds, confused as to what was happening. “N-no, I don’t. Where am I? What’s happening? Where’s Niarith?” Officer Mechanicane walked away from the table, toward the opaque panel on the wall. She pressed a finger to it, and an image appeared on it. It was Niarith’s ship, landed in a large metal room Lucia didn’t recognize. The perspective was from somewhere up on a wall, and a doorway could be seen in the lower left of the picture. Lucia had thought it was simply an image, until three people ran through the doorway, and stared at the ship. One of them was clearly Officer Mechanicane. Lucia watched the display as Officer Mechanicane made her way over to a console and spoke into a microphone. There was no sound, so Lucia didn’t know what was said. After a few seconds, the ship’s hatch opened, and a bright teal light could be seen emanating from inside. The real Officer Mechanicane tapped a symbol on the display and the view changed. It was now lower down, seemingly above the doorway seen in the last shot. Lucia could see… herself. Standing in the airlock of Niarith’s ship, naked. The glow behind her pulsed, her eyes began to glow, and she spoke. Again, Lucia did not know what she’d said. The video paused, and as the security officer tapped another symbol, zoomed in on Lucia. Officer Mechanicane turned to face Lucia again. “This is you, correct?” “Yes, it is, but… I have no memory of this. When did this happen?” “6 hours ago. Your ship was flagged as suspicious when contacted by Station Control, and events unfolded as you …

“Where the hell am I?” I ask myself under my breath as I run across what looks like a wide open square with a strange spiral fountain in the middle. I’m running over triangular flagstones on my socks. Where are my shoes? “Ow fuck!” The socks are already giving way and I’m basically running on my bare feet. I look up to try and identify my surroundings beyond the growing crowd of eyes, so many different eyes. The skyscrapers around the square are strangely unsettling. They look like blades with rounded edges piercing the sky. Most of their windows are round or oval with intricate frameworks interlinking them. I slow down to gawk at the alien structures, as I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it on earth. The strangest part of it all is how run-down everything looks, like it was a picture of some far-future utopia, but a few hundred years after people stopped trying to make the place look nice.

Then we just need to get DNA to compare to the victims, and we will have this case wrapped up.” “Kind of crummy to stand up all those other women, though.” “I won’t be the first person to no-show a date. I’m sure they’ll get over it. Besides, it is in service of the greater good.” I shrugged. “Well, at least text them to say you can’t make it, once you know.” “Oh, fine. Bleeding heart.” I scoffed. “It doesn’t cost anything to be nice.” “How many matches are we at, now?” I changed the subject. “Fifteen, I think.” “Ok, that is probably enough for a start.” “Worried you are going to be swarmed by admirers?” Tom chuckled. “Oh, not really. The phone number on the account is yours.”
