Mirideth experiences her new synthetic nervous system for the first time. It isn't fun...
(Excerpt from FHSD Book 2: Sink Deep, Rise Higher)
Mirideth was less excited, “This is going to hurt isn’t it?” “Not while it’s happening! But once you wake up, oooooh boy.” She then jabbed a needle into Mirideth’s arm unexpectedly and her world went dark. Mirideth awoke to pain. Intense, burning pain, as if every single nerve in her body were simultaneously on fire. She would have screamed, but she couldn’t move. She couldn’t see. She was aware of nothing but the most intense pain she had ever felt. Intense light, the brightest light she’d ever seen burned through her visual cortex. It faded and the ceiling of the black market operating room came into view. The burning pain settled into a dull throb in every nerve in her body. She could move, hear, and think. The restraints released, and she tested her limbs. “Ffffuck.” Was the first word that escaped Mirideth’s lips. Even breathing, speaking, hurt. Every movement that could be felt by a human body hurt.

Maria could no longer feel any sensation of touch at all. It was a strange feeling, or lack of one. A robotic arm reached into the tear in her arm and grabbed at the inside. Maria looked away as it pulled back out, having… taken something. Other arms were doing the same inside the incision in her torso. Two saws came online, slowly tilting downward until they were horizontal, and at the top of Maria’s legs. “This is going well, Maria. You’re going to be beautiful.” Myrrhdta seemed to have calmed down. She now seemed genuinely happy with her work. Maria knew she couldn’t stop it. She couldn’t speak now, with her entire body numb. It felt like she wasn’t breathing. She wasn’t sure if she was. The robotic arms injected, removed, replaced. Over and over, everywhere at once. She wanted to cry, to scream, but there was nothing she could do. “Aw, are you scared, sweetheart?” Myrrhdta said, her voice gentle, “Well, you probably should be. But it’ll be fine. Just you wait. I mean, it’s not like you’re gonna exactly be you anymore anyway.”

(Excerpt from FHSD Book 3: Rise Up, Strike Harder)
Doc Marlnok lifted Linilith’s shirt, revealing tightly wrapped bandages, which they promptly cut off with a pair of shears they pulled out of a pocket. Tantrii hadn’t actually seen the wound yet. It was worse than she’d imagined. Blackened flesh surrounded a horizontal space where the skin was simply gone. Linilith’s spine was visible within, the bone blackened and distorted, some pieces entirely missing. Doc Marlnok let out a low whistle, “Shit… yeah you ain’t walking again. Not without getting some serious work done, and that ain’t gonna come cheap.” Tantrii frowned, “Dawn give me hope, Doc! Have a little tact when you’re telling someone something like that!” She shrugged, “Ain’t no point in sugar coating it.” She turned back to Linilith, “We can getcha a wheelchair for now, maybe an exo-suit, but that’ll be slow and bulky. Up to you. Regardless, I gotta close up this hole in ya.”

Retild sighed, then stood up at the front of the room. He was silent for a few long moments before he finally spoke, “We got your comms when you were enroute, but we need details. What under the rising Dawn happened out there?” “Exactly what we already told you. The feds invaded _ out of nowhere, decimated the system’s defenses in a matter of hours, occupied at least Kowlia city, likely more, and then _.” Niarith said. “How?” Calmav asked, “How in th’ fuck did they wreck _’s defenses so quickly? We had that system locked down, there’s no way they should’ve been able t’-” Maria interrupted, “I think I might be able to answer that. When the attack began, I was in contact with _. _ told me that several of the weapons platforms in the _ system exploded as the 2nd and 3rd Fleets arrived. The fleets didn’t destroy them, they were sabotaged. OSD ships were present in the system before the attack.” Calmav stared at her for a few seconds, then slammed a fist on the table, “Fuck!” They sat back and crossed their arms, fuming.

Maria laughed nervously, “What exactly have you heard about me?” “Well, to hear Ni-Ni tell it, you’re the greatest woman who ever lived. Not her words, of course, but it’s the vibes, y’know. _. Maria’s first love was a woman named Alicia Grenik. They met during their training in the Forsythe Rebellion, and eventually got together during a mission involving being alone together in the woods. But training took them in different directions, and they agreed that they couldn’t stay together.

I’m glad to see people protesting Discord forcing IDs for age verification, but what I need everyone to understand is that there’s immense bipartisan pressure to make the entire internet like this, and they are likely going to succeed unless something drastic happens

Maria participates in a space battle...
(Excerpt from FHSD Book 4: Stand Tall and Shatter)
Maria stepped across the cockpit to a console she’d used many times before. An array of switches and sliders sat before her, as well as a single screen, showing the view from a camera connected to the Epsilon VII’s twin ‘Lil Gal’ railguns. Maria immediately began a scan for targets, and the closest, still two thousand kilometers away, was outlined in red. It was a scout ship similar to their own, but a full generation older. She slid the load slider for Gun One to half, and flicked its fire switch. After taking a second to charge, the gun fired. A streak of yellow-orange light lanced across the void, contacting the scout ship and blowing straight through it. Liquid metal sprayed in all directions, as did the mangled bodies of soldiers from inside the craft.

Discord is already starting to walk things back a little, so people should keep doing what they're doing (cancel Nitro, leave feedback/criticism, direct contact through support tickets/phone/email/etc)
Tl;dr: The vast majority of adults will never have to interact with our age assurance systems and their experience won't change, because we know Discord and how people use it, so we're designing to respect privacy and deliver a safer experience while minimizing friction for adults. Hey folks – I’ve been on Discord since very early 2016 and actually joined the company in 2017. Safety is one of my areas, so today’s announcement on our blog is something I’ve been pretty involved with. I’ve always cared about Discord's approach to privacy (E2EE for A/V was another of my projects here), so I figured I’d add some more context to today's news. I can say confidently that the vast majority of people will never see age verification. I say this because we launched age assurance in the UK and Australia in 2025, and we have some pretty good data on this now. The idea here is that we can pre-identify most adults based on what we already know (not including your messages!), and that looks to get us pretty far here. No face scans, no IDs, for the vast majority of adults. And if you are one of the smaller subset of folks that we can't definitively pre-identify, then still, you only have to do it if you're accessing age-restricted servers or channels, or changing certain settings. That's really not most users. (Altho... might be more Redditors, tbh.) Last, I know that there is concern about privacy and data leaks. That's a real concern. The selfie system is built purely client-side, it never leaves your device, and we did that intentionally. That'll work for a bunch of users who aren't pre-identified as adults. But if you do end up in the ID bucket, then yeah, you're right that has some risk. We're doing what we can to minimize this by working with our range of partners (who are different partners than the data leak you read about), and if it's any help, we learned a lot internally from the last issue. But I get if that doesn't necessarily inspire more confidence. Anyway, we’ll be sharing more next month as we get closer to the global roll out about the system, including the technology behind it in March. I honestly wouldn't be happy if we didn't build something good and I am excited about what we’re launching, but please let us know what you think when we share more details. And I really appreciate everybody's feedback here today. We’re definitely reading it!

Maria gets dressed whilst musing on her non-human body...
(Excerpt from FHSD Book 4: Stand Tall and Shatter)
She made her way across the small room to the wardrobe and selected a short black sundress. Maria rarely wore anything other than dresses anymore. She’d spent the first two years of her cybernetic existence nude except for a leather jacket she’d stolen from a defeated FIC ship captain. She’d felt that clothing was for humans, something she no longer saw herself as. Her friend Linilith had helped her to see that she was more than a machine. That she didn’t need to shed all vestiges of humanity just because she resided in a robotic body. So, she wore clothes. But her non-human body made certain items difficult. There was only so much nanite weave textiles could handle. Dresses were just easier than anything involving pants, given her non-human shaped legs. Though her custom IIF bodysuit looked nice, at least, especially with her leather jacket. But that was for official business. Today was not. Looking herself over in the mirror, Maria shrugged. She looked the same as ever, really. Plates of black rubberized metal covered her black metal endoskeletal system, as well as her internal components. Coolant hoses stuck through holes in her sundress, leading from just below her ‘breasts’ to the base of her neck. Maria idly touched the gold ring clasped around the left hose; her wedding band. The gold accents on the plate edges were looking a little faded these days, she made a mental note to get Ryani or Lolanene on that soon. Her tail swished through the air behind her, dangerous as ever with its bladed tip. A smile appeared on her LED facial simulation; a set of teal lights that made a crude representation of a human face, non-animated, only switching between static images. She sighed, and had to admit she looked good.

Maria fights primarily with knives, or failing that, whatever else she has to hand. Though she knows not to bring a knife to an energy projector(laser gun) fight, and will use them when she has to.

Mirideth stepped from the pedestrian offload ramp, into the sweltering heat and blue tinged landscape of Lyrion II. Far from home, hellish weather, but it will be worth it. She thought, as she entered the spaceport terminal. The terminal was crowded with people, most only stopping briefly on the arid planet. Very few actually lived there. Mirideth walked with purpose, her thin black dress clinging to her unpleasantly in the heat. Even inside, air conditioning wasn’t enough to keep out the punishing assault of the Class B star Lyrion. Her sunglasses’ AR HUD showed her where to go, making finding her way through the crowded mass of perspiring humanity easy. After several minutes, she found her way to the other side of the terminal, where a high speed train awaited her. As she sat on the train, watching the blue landscape of Lyrion II speed by, she thought about the choice she was making, the sacrifice. She was about to give up her humanity for a chance at immortality. Would she even be the same person, after it was done? After her brain had been fully consumed? It would be years until then, but the thought was unnerving to the young girl. It didn’t matter. She needed this. Several hours later, the train arrived in the town of Hollington. One of the very few large settlements on the arid hellscape of a planet. As she stepped off onto the platform, Mirideth noted that the night on this planet was only slightly cooler than the day. How anyone lived here was beyond her ability to grasp. Her AR glasses led the way, having unpolarized in the darkness. The streets were fairly empty, it seemed people rarely stayed outside long on this planet.

As the ship flew nearer to the old hulk of the Intigrelt ship, Maria’s nonexistent stomach dropped. The flames had overtaken the wreck. Fallen, burning trees and plant debris covered it, giving the impression that the wreck itself was on fire. “Oh geez… we… I think we’re too late, gals.” Ryani said, staring at the screen. “I can get in. I don’t need to breathe.” Maria stepped forward. “You don’t, but your friend does. Do you really think she’s still alive in there?” Ryani asked “I don’t care. Alive or not, we’re not leaving her down there. She risked herself to save me back on Zoridian VIc, and she was certain I was dead. Void take me if I won’t do the same for her!” Maria turned and left the cockpit, her feet loud against the polished metal floor.

Maria crept as silently as she could to the doorway where Lolanene had been. As she reached it, she felt the sudden sensation of something large and heavy slamming into her, pinning her against the wall. She looked down, it was one of the many tangled roots that filled the room and presumably the rest of the ship. Standing in front of it was Lolanene, the vine still attached to her neck. She was grinning widely, though her eyes were unfocused, and seemed to try to dart in different directions before being forced back into their neutral position. “The interloper persists.” She said, speaking for the plant, “Why does it not flee? It knows it cannot win. Does it wish itself to be destroyed? We could have provided that before. Tell us, interloper. Why does it fight an impossible battle? To free the bounty from us? The bounty cannot nourish it as it does us. The bounty cannot serve it better than it could serve itself. The bounty is useless to it. So why, why does it fight for it?” Lolanene’s voice spoke without her accent, it was unnerving. Maria sighed in exasperation, “Because they’re my family and I love them. I will get them back. You’re not turning them into husks like that man I saw earlier. That is not happening. Not while a single fucking rivet of me still exists.” The plant thing giggled in Lolanene’s voice, “We do not understand, interloper. The bounty is ours. This is not negotiable. It will feed us for decades. We sought to ask, to understand. But the interloper is not cooperative. It speaks in emotion and falsehood. Does it believe its own lies? It does not matter. It will die now.”

I’m not afraid of you-” In one swift motion, Maria unsheathed her knife and drove it between the plates of the officer’s neck armor, then pulled it back out. Blood dribbled through the gap as the man choked, and promptly fell to the floor, unmoving. “You should have been.” Maria replied. She looked up at the other officers, who seemed less confident than they’d been moments ago.
