Saying he’s a “criminal illegal alien & not a firefighter” is meant to make you see him as less than a person.
They do the same thing to disabled people. We’re “useless eaters”.

Maria does what she needs to do as soon as she possibly can. Discipline was drilled into her from her early teens onward as part of her training. She wouldn't even consider procrastinating on anything.

Her name is Maria Lucia Carlena. I originally named her Lucia, which became Lucia Carlena, then Lucia Maria Carlena as the story evolved. After a certain bit of character development, I changed it so that Maria had been her first name the entire time, and she'd been going by her middle name.
