I paused and put my phone down, closing my eyes to calm down. There was a reason that the electricity came on, there was a reason that there was an access point. Shit, there had to be a reason that the shit was unlocked in the first place. If I kept calm, if I just went back and checked the places I had not looked, I would find something. ‘blah-ding,’ my phone cried. I nearly jumped from my skin when the notification chime came through. It didn’t seem possible, but as I pulled down the system tab, there was no doubt about it; ‘new message request’. It was an alert from GenNow. I didn’t hesitate, I didn’t ask questions, I accepted the message request to get to the bottom of this. G0ald_ieL0x: (You accepted, hit 1 if you’re not a bot) DuggyTron3030: (What? You n my dms? Prov you not a bot) G0ald_ieL0x: (Good nuff – I don’t have a lot of time) (This network won’t be active for long, just know I amz a scientist and a friend. I have info, the outbreak – it is man made. Add me) There were countless thoughts running through my mind. Why in the hell was this person reaching out to me? If they were really a scientist there had to be at least a hundred different people, they could have contacted. I couldn’t imagine what was going through this person's mind. This was the part of the movie where I would hit accept, find out some shit I wasn’t ever supposed to know and then wind up the sacrifice for some white savior. The good news? I was alone and there weren’t any particular living white people around for me to make such a mistake. The bad news, however, was that I was a big dumb idiot that accepted anyway. Bráthal is in a difficult mental space.

- Brother’s Keeper, book one of my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power.
Drisal reemerged armed with a hatchet, and began chopping at the landing and connecting branches, kicking and heaving what was burning away from what still lived intact. In a few moments Rushak arrived to work beside him, having crossed to that tree Iryla-knew-how. But the flaming pieces only dropped to the landing below them, which was also afire. From where he watched, Bráthal had a clear PICTURE of the two of them alone, insignificant fools on one part of one landing, fire at levels above and below them, battling odds that grew ever more impossible. Soon they would have to run. He seemed to see Rushak's clothing catch fire, that voluminous, stupid-looking linen shirt. He would enjoy watching that— even knowing the thought was absurd—and then would see the rest, would see the flames rise to consume both brothers, he seemed to see it ... and a horror filled him then. He’d been a young man then, with a rounded face and wide eyes. She’d been told that these days, the image would be a likely approximation of both Prince Erryn and Prince Drake. Elena still found it difficult to imagine time on such a scale; she was of common blood, and though her parents had placed her in proximity to Touched as often as possible, she had simply not been alive long enough to notice their agelessness for herself. A familiar pang of envy washed over her. She could never be perfect, not compared to them.

“Ah, listen fellas,” The man squeaked from his knees, one arm bent back and held tight in the mercenary’s grip. He was a lean man with a gap toothed smile that made him seem less threatening than he likely was. “I just wanna let you know, you don’t have to intimidate me into anything, alright? This has been a shit job from day one, and I will happily sing like a fuckin’ canary, any tune you wanna hear? Right?” And sing he did. The man, Dead Eye Danny by name, told them everything he had seen, heard, smelled, or imagined in the last ten days he’d spent bivouacked with the other Blackboots in Var Krugan’s camp. He explained the ambush laid for Wren, the equipment, number, and location of Var Krugan’s forces, the Blackboots’ less than steadfast dedication to the cause, and painted a truly lurid picture of the experiments he suspected the Magnus of conducting inside the temple at Urbe Mortuos. If Danny had known what cut and color of underwear Var Krugan wore, he probably would have told them that, too.

A dark-haired man with his arm around a lighter-haired woman—her neck rolled back, caught mid-laugh—two children in bathing suits, a sand castle between them. “Shrimp!” she called. “Come here, come take a look at this.” He meandered over and she pointed, her finger hitting the glass, leaving behind a smudge of dirt. “See that? In the background there? All that blue.” She grinned, almost as wide as the woman in the picture. “That's the ocean.” Her chest swelled as she breathed it in, imagining the sweet, sea-salt air. “That's where we're going.”

I almost went with an Oscar Wilde or a James Baldwin here, but I think about Fun Home by Alison Bechdel so often, I had to go with it. I’d never read graphic memoir before and loved this marrying of form and genre. The sensitivity that comes through her dark humor… it’s all fantastic.

I’m not actually planning to talk to any of these people, obviously. I just need to set up a meeting somewhere public, so that I can see them. We don’t need to go for milkshakes for me to figure out if they are ubarae. Then we just need to get DNA to compare to the victims, and we will have this case wrapped up.” “Kind of crummy to stand up all those other women, though.” “I won’t be the first person to no-show a date. I’m sure they’ll get over it. Besides, it is in service of the greater good.” I shrugged. “Well, at least text them to say you can’t make it, once you know.” “Oh, fine. Bleeding heart.” I scoffed. “It doesn’t cost anything to be nice.” “How many matches are we at, now?” I changed the subject. “Fifteen, I think.” “Ok, that is probably enough for a start.” “Worried you are going to be swarmed by admirers?” Tom chuckled. “Oh, not really. He turned away from me, pretending to look at the pictures on the wall, though I knew he was just trying to hide how much it affected him. “So, where’s the damn letter?” he asked, putting on a detached tone, though he couldn’t suppress the quiver in his voice. “It better be here after all we went through.” “I’m not sure,” I admitted. “He didn’t tell me.” “Oh, great.”

Askaly recognised one of them: Bi-Han, Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei, better known across the realms by his mantle of Sub-Zero. The stories of this fierce defender of Earthrealm had painted an accurate picture: a Chinese man with a grave face covered by a black beard and the deep wrinkles and faded scars of a seasoned warrior. Icy vapours exuded from his hands, fingertips tainted a dark blue as if frostbitten. Speculation that Bi-Han was the realm’s best chance at defeating Shao Kahn’s chosen fighters had often accompanied the talks Askaly overheard of this upcoming tournament.

I tug out the folded photograph I use as a bookmark and open it. A picture of me, my mom, and my father, taken himself with the camera turned around. An analog selfie. My mom and baby-me are blurry around the edges, as if underwater, shoved up against the fuzzy white line of the crease bisecting the photograph. My father’s face looms large in the lower left foreground, his young face rendered with exceptional clarity, tauntingly oversized. The irony of it never sat well with me. The more accurate visual metaphor for his presence in my life would probably be the smash of his arm in the corner, a pixelated wash of taupe marring the border. I know only four facts about my father: (1) Insu Shin was from a well-to-do family in Korea but left home as a teenager. (2) He and my mom met in their twenties, then immigrated to New Jersey when she was pregnant with me. (3) His mental health sharply declined, and he left us before I turned one, ranting that he had to return home. (4) He loved poetry. And maybe now I could add: (5) He died in Alaska trying to find his way back to Kardia. Maybe.

I’m a huge fan of V. E. Schwab. Gorgeous prose, thoughtful plotting, unforgettable characters. Her Shades of Magic series brought me out of a long reading slump (postpartum depression hit me hard), but this is my favorite of hers. She captures the defiance of the female spirit so well.

I only meant that—the little flaws, the little pieces of yourself that everyone worries about, those things don’t make you broken. And you shouldn’t—I hope you’ll try to be kinder to yourself. But yes, I suppose, there are people who are broken in certain ways. Including me. Sometimes life gives you injuries you never really recover from.” “El, that’s true,” Mem sighed. “And also,” he added, “I think there are some people in this world—many people—who are... rotten, on the inside. Whatever part of the soul makes us human, somehow they don’t have it. Maybe they were born without it. Maybe they had it once, but they strangled it dead so it wouldn’t bother them anymore. Could you call those kinds of people broken? Maybe. Though to me, I think of them more like garbage—waste. A broken thing doesn’t pollute the space it lives in, but garbage does, and it’s the same with those people. The world would be healthier without them.”

Then mama explained that humans are wingless, and I thought”—she laughed—“what a strange species, to be born without wings.”
