A long time later, he awakened to the sound of moaning. His eyes flickered hesitantly open, and he looked at the dark stains on the ceiling of the tent. He watched a pale light flicker through the fabric, making the stains darker as the CANVAS became lighter. He knew when the moment would come that the bleak contrast between the stains and the clean CANVAS was greatest, and then the light would begin to fade. He watched it with certainty, for he had seen it many times—the groping fingers of dawn, sinking back into the bog of darkness. The two stains looked like spiders, having been made by something splattered. The larger spider reached down to the smaller one with one disproportionately long leg. He watched the spiders fade into the surrounding darkness again, then slowly tried to move his arm Siege of the Spirit

Oh, Farley loves children. Which is a convenient trait for a midwife. He doesn't think he'd want any of his own, but maybe when he's older he would apprentice some little witches. But he's a bleeding heart, so I could see a child in need of a home derailing all of Farley's plans.

Noah finds a stash of his mom's old paintings.

From #Tenement, my dystopian mystery about people living in an infinite building.
The thrill of seeing so many of my mother’s artworks all in one place, after having not seen any for years, was enough to even drive the mystery of Lazarus from my mind. I gazed at them all in fascination, one after the other, absorbing their images hungrily. A woman sitting at a table, clutching a baby on her lap while she read a book. Three boys playing a game in a yellow-lit corridor. A young man who looked suspiciously like Mr. Gellar, standing amid shelves of books in the Library, shrouded in shadows. An empty corridor, seemingly stretching on and on and on forever. A woman with wild eyes kneeling before several brown-robed Collectors, as one of them raised up the Landlord’s Sword over her head. A group of people crowded into the Foyer, being pushed out the Front Door, which was flung open—revealing a deep blackness beyond, so black the paint seemed to make a hole in the canvas. Collectors were herding them out into the void. Some of the exiles looked frightened, some defiant. One man, the leader, held his head high, arrogant even in the face of the abyss. I lingered on that last painting, horrified and yet captivated. I knew the story behind it; it was one of the more famous legends in the Tenement’s history. But when the tale was usually told, the leader of the banished group was always portrayed as a villainous cult-leader, a lunatic. Yet in my mother’s painting, I read something distinctly sympathetic in his proud face. Something almost... heroic.

Rae turned over and looked at the ceiling. Closed and papered like the other four walls around her, it acted as just another blank canvas for Rae to project her life upon. Thoughts of her mother and her father clouded her brain, and she had no place for them. So they floated, reminding her that she’d gotten herself into this and now she had to get herself out. She couldn’t let her emotions get the best of her, and she couldn’t act out like a pathetic child.

GTI had no 'canvas' and even finding something comparable will be hard until book 2. But MoLaB has an actual painter, so here we go
I grabbed the cloth off one canvas and pulled it away. My eyes bulged open and I quickly put the sheet back on so the children wouldn’t see. It was a painting of me… naked, sexually evocative. She had put a high level of detail into every spine of my cock. I turned to the children. “Um, could you two look away, please? These aren’t things children should see.” Cohaku gulped and turned away. Tynan, confused, grew a pair of thick eyebrows just for the sake of raising one. They must have been so desensitized to sex and violence already that it didn’t faze them. “Please, Your Luminance,” I begged. “I know it sounds silly, but please do it for me. I cannot have it on my conscience that I allowed a child to look at… at this sort of thing.” “I understand,” Tynan said. “I shall remove my eyeballs.” They transformed their face, indeed removing their eyes, leaving empty sockets in their head. I wondered if they were aware of how unnerving that was. Perhaps that was the idea. A merchant of dance should intimidate. I hadn’t meant for them to do that, but… I supposed it worked.

Outside the cave yet still behind the holly screen Theris had a small haystack—lamentably small, now there were so many horses to feed. They paused to peer into the surrounding forest; finding no sight or smell of Kudrum, they threw back Virgil's oilcloth tarps. Beneath, the hay smelled sweet. They each took an armful and carried it back to the corral. "Why was he so desperate?" Theris asked. "Why did he leave the Forest on a long, dangerous journey just for a love gift? He shuffled sideways from the row of discarded shoes to the family shrine jutting out from the stone wall. A man-shaped soapstone figure roughly the size of Sam’s thumb sat alone on the top shelf. Wavy grooves on the chin represented a beard, and a tiny hammer was carved into its rounded fist. “I come bearing gifts,” he added, moving his idol from the top shelf to the middle row of the small altar, signifying his return home. “But are they the right gifts?” Riya snatched at Sam’s canvas tote, tugging at the mouth of the bag to peer inside. “I don’t see any buns. Are you hiding a bouquet down your trouser leg?” “Riya,” his voice hardened into a tone he rarely used with his youngest sister. Guilt twanged briefly in Sam’s chest, but his aching back and empty stomach quickly swallowed it. Frowning, Riya let go of the bag. Her gaze drifted to the altar, resting there for a long moment. She used one slender ink-stained finger to nudge the idols on the middle row, spacing them more evenly along the shelf. “You brought something for Babba?” Riya’s voice lost its thorns, becoming something almost sweet. “Of course,” Sam answered. Delving into the tote, he retrieved a tiny wedge of cheese leftover from his lunch and a handful of yellow buttercups he’d plucked from Hazel’s garden. The cheese had a bit of lint stuck to it, and the flowers were slightly squashed, but Babba wouldn’t mind. Reverently, Sam laid the offering on the third shelf of the family altar. Painted blue and carved with waving lines, it represented those family members who had rejoined the River, seeking enlightenment or another chance at life. He spread the flowers out, tucking them between his father’s idol and other figurines representing his grandparents. Riya watched quietly, respectful for once, and touched two fingers to her lips when Sam rang the tiny chimes that hung beside the altar.

She needed to talk to Av’ry right away and, unfortunately, that meant that she needed to talk to Mikiva as well. This night just kept being better. Well, no sense delaying an unpleasant confrontation, the longer she stewed about this, the more irritable she was going to be when she went through with it. So, Fox rose and walked over to the tent, slapping her hand against the canvas. “Get out here, we need to talk.” “Not a good time, Fox,” Av’ry’s voice replied through the tent, just a little breathless. “I’ll wait while you put on pants,” she called back tersely. “The parameters have changed. Get out here, now.” A moment passed in silence. Fox was just considering whether she should knock again, when Av’ry pushed back the flap, smoothing his hair absently. “What do you mean the parameters have changed?” “There are complications. Now get Mikiva out here so that we can discuss them.” “I don’t think that is a very good idea…” “No, me going in to get her myself would be a bad idea. Make your choice.”

Besides, if it was a trap, it’d almost certainly not been designed with werewolves in mind. A couple more leaps across the treacherous snow landed her a few feet away from the strange shape, close enough to get a better idea of what it was she was looking at. It seemed to be a cart, though the horse which’d been pulling it, the people who’d been travelling with it, and whatever cargo it’d been carrying were all long gone, save for a crumpled and bloodstained canvas trailing down over one of the wheels. It’d also equally clearly been moved from the middle of the road to where it was now, recently enough that the gouges carved through the snow by the wheels had yet to be fully covered again by new snowfall. *Curiouser and curiouser. So whoever moved this did it after whatever happened with Archer and Sabbat. Except…* Except that she could smell their scents here as well, and more recent than the blood. *Follow the freshest trail. If there’s any way we can find out what’s going on here, it’ll be at the end of that.* She *should* have been leaving well enough alone and making her way up to the Hall – Caine might be slower than she was, but he’d still catch her if she wasted enough time on the road – but she’d got her teeth into a mystery now, and she wasn’t about to leave it half-solved.

“You lot, follow me! Step lively! On the double!” Cynthia yells and starts jogging towards Rondu’s ever increasing complex with her one green canvas bag over her shoulder, and the twenty or so new recruits start jogging behind her while looking around in total wonder at their surroundings. “It feels like boot camp all over again!” Joey says, slinging his own bag over his shoulder but waiting for me to get moving. “It’s like I’m watching a movie with a troop training scene,” I comment, helping to lift the last box onto one of Rondu’s drones. “To the recreation room, please,” I say to it. It nods, or at least I think it does, and sets off following the new recruits to the complex. “Right, that’s everything. Thanks, Wul Pra! We’ll call if we need anything else!” I call up and wave at the Kowellian, clearly visible inside the glass bubble that is the saucer control room up near the top. He waves back at me, and the saucer goes through its usual takeoff process. Dust kicks up from underneath it, forcing Joey and I to turn around and face away from it.

To Twii’s side, Rum also looked toward a different table, the Dove table, and, to the other side, the unnamed, as yet, warlock, gazed toward the Serpent table. It seemed none of them had been placed in their desired house, not that it made a difference, of course, but it was the principle of the thing, and Twii liked principles, they were like personal laws. Throughout the great hall, Twii saw pennants and flags billowing above them, indicating the tables and houses. Standing candelabra carried dozens of flickering candles, as did the chandeliers above. Along the walls, paintings of long dead, presumably(1), mages glared down at the students, as though resentful of the intrusion by hundreds of children in their hallowed halls, and, above, in the rafters of the hall, Twii felt certain they saw movement. They suspected a lot of magic used for this display and they, like many witches, deplored the waste. Magic, to a witch, was best used sparingly.

Spencer asks Duncan to model for him and makes him sit half-naked. What he didn't anticipate is how painting him would make him feel things ... This is the end of the process. (Spencer painys with his fingers in this scene).
Tracing his scars, on his arms, his chest. Painting them, gliding his fingers in them. His tongue poked out between his lips as he got lost, and Duncan became one with the canvas, with that man taking shape under his hands and fingers. Wondering how his skin felt, a bit mad at his own skin and chest burning with a soft fire he had never known. No matter. Finish this. Bold movements, his eyes guiding his hands, his heart hammering… the eyes, last, and above that bitter light, something else. A dab of paint, he had to catch his eyes several times, noticing that light… leaning a bit back, a bit out of breath as sweat broke out on his back. Looking into his eyes. They seemed alive, the whole man transposed on that canvas. A masterpiece. Somehow, Spencer knew that he had never painted anything like this. I need a drink… maybe too… that fright there.

terbury also got into the clock-making game – the radium clock-making game. Poor unsuspecting women, who dared commit the sin of working outside the home, were punished with divine cancer as they ingested the radioactive paint on their brushes. The clocks and watches emitted a beautiful green glow, so one could tell man’s time even when the world faced away from the sun. You no longer had to know about seasonal star patterns relative to your latitude. So convenient! Totally worth the health of a few young unmarried girls.

Askaly squinted as the portal opened to blinding white. Beside her, Fujin gasped, and she didn’t understand why until her eyes adjusted to the light. Bodies half-buried in snow. Lost hands and legs sticking out of the ice, frost and necrosis gnawing at the dead flesh. Blots and dashes of crimson against the white as if a painter who, frustrated with their rebellious muse, had daubed in anger at their empty canvas.

5 star review of Oath Keeper: On the Other Hand I love how you are just dropped into the action of this story. The author tells the reader just enough to feel the stress and pressure of the Oath Keeper's situation but keeps you reading to find out what happens. I'd say this could qualify as a morally-gray MC but really, the morality if those who extract the oaths are more in question. Quick but not light read.
