“An’ pancakes,” Sabbat finished. He nodded towards the window, where the thin light streaming through the shutters had given way to the utter darkness of a stormy night. “Or did y’not realise we’d worked all the way through t’supper?”

“And pancakes,” Archer agreed, with a smile that didn’t entirely reach his eye. “Though I suspect Cyra’s not likely to have those to hand. She did promise me that she’d set aside a reasonable amount of food for us while she was preparing dinner for the rest of the household – and I suspect enough for you too, Viola, if you’d like to join us.”

“Spirits, yes!” She’d not realised exactly how hungry she was until Sabbat had mentioned food, and now it was practically all she could think of. What I wouldn’t give for a proper portion of fish and chips right now. Or, hells, one of the pancakes from the street cart on the corner of Orca and Pennyroyal, the ones with so much sour cream you can barely see the meat underneath.

What she’d get would be whatever Cyra had access to, of course, which probably meant more venison, but that was hardly a problem. *Though I could wish we’d managed to bring that buck we hunted back for her. Would’ve been a good addition to the stores, and properly* fresh *meat on the table this evening.*

*Then again, we were a little sodding busy at the time.*

“Forgive my interruption, sir, but I fear the evening closes in and I believe another snow shower approaches.” He had a big overcoat folded over his arm and then began wrapping it around Boulder’s shoulders. “I have taken the liberty, sir, of soliciting the service of a small cart to return us to the palace. I have a sandwich, for the return journey, and a flask of brandy, should the chill grow too frigid. After you, sir.”

Boulder didn’t have the strength to fight against it. He sloped back toward where the villagers had continued to organise the search for Old Man Hobble, now that the distraction of the ‘Queen’ had gone. Good people. Proud people, who didn’t deserve to have royalty making them feel like they were lesser because of their place in society. Not even fake royalty. It was getting dark, and cold, and he accepted the brandy. He needed a drink.

T’was the eleventh night of Festivus, and all through the village nothing stirred that night. Except for a large amount of people with butterfly nets. A wish was a wish, after all.

“If you’re here about monsters,” Reggie said quickly and quietly, “then you’ve come to the right place.” More loudly, she added, “Hey, can we get a menu for our friend here?”
“No need, ha-ha,” Mr. Henderson protested as he waved to the waitress, an older woman who looked like she should be named Flo, no matter what the nametag said. “Ahem, you have a vegetarian menu, yes? Then I’d like a soy burger, no cheese, extra pickles, if you’d please. Side of fries and a glass of water. Yes…” he said as ‘Flo’ walked away with the order. “I suppose we were all looking for one another after all. That was, er, your video I came across on the internet, yes?”
“One of a few,” Reggie confirmed. “We haven’t uploaded the rest yet.”
“Excellent work, sir,” Mr. Henderson said to Braskell.
The deputy snorted. “I’m not the one you should be saying that to. I’ve never even seen one of these things alive. These two are your local experts.” He flashed a thumb’s-up at the teens. “Credit where it’s due.”
“Amazing…” Mr. Henderson shook his head. “I’d assumed an adult or at least someone with experience with hunting and trapping, to catch one of those creatures, and of that size. Someone like your father.” He nodded to JB.
Braskell’s laugh was sharp and dry.
The young man took a long sip from his glass of iced cola. “Dunno what impression Pop gave you on Friday, but a hunter he wasn’t. Pretty much the opposite.” Next to him, Reggie shrank back into her seat and shivered.
“Ah… I am missing something, aren’t I?”
Reggie brought up the correct window on the old laptop, so that it now showed the worst-moments reel of the past few days. “Like I said, we haven’t uploaded everything, and for good reason. Can hardly bear to look at it, even. You’ll, ah, wanna…

Nothing close to a burger in any of my WIPs, so here are some other "culinary delights" 😋

From Mem & Light's first meeting in #Charagma, my SFF dystopia where all people are marked saved or damned from birth.

While waiting for one of the attendants, Mem scanned the bar’s shelves. Not surprising, there were several bottles of what she assumed must be alcoholic drinks, some of which she recognized, many of which she didn’t. There were also a selection of various things that could be smoked, and the implements with which to smoke them. A moving carousel of decadent foods—sauce-slathered meats, sugary pastries, crepes drowning in gooey cheese—rotated in a perpetual circle in and out of the kitchen area and around where the guests were seated at the bar. People snatched up the dishes as they passed by. About half of the dishes, and half of the drinks in the patrons’ hands, were glowing with a faint light, infused with numen for the holiday.
“Have you ever tried numen-infused food?” she asked Light.
He shook his head. “Too pricey for me. You?”
“A few times,” she replied, not wanting to admit that her family was rich enough to have it about once a month. “It’s amazing. Care to try a numen drink now? I’ll buy it for you.”
As soon as the words were out of her mouth, she worried she might offend him by the offer. He did make a face at her, but not one of wounded pride—more of skeptical disgust. “You want to spend your money on that? What’s so special about it, anyway? I’ve never understood the appeal.”
“It ‘illuminates the mind, awakens the body and refreshes the soul,’” she said.
“Without the advertisement script, please. Does it actually taste better?”
“It does!”
“Oh, in what way?”
“I can’t describe it,” she shrugged. “You’ll just have to try it.

I rested and had some of our rations. Even if we ate sparsely, I didn't know how he expected me to make these rations last beyond a couple of weeks. And the water would run out sooner. I was soon to learn the answer, but I didn't like it
Azrael came back carrying the third backpack. He took it off and opened it, so that I could examine the contents. Small dead animals. I understood immediately that I was supposed to eat these. And even if I could start a fire, I knew the last thing that Azrael wanted was a tell-tale column of smoke that could be seen from kilometres away.
“I don't suppose you have a tofu burger there,” I said and a small smile appeared on Azrael's face, lingered for a short time and disappeared.
I learned two very important things from that. Firstly that Azrael understood what I said, he had never before given any indication that he did. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, he had a sense of humour.

“You hungover? I’ve never seen you hungover in my life. What did you get up to?”
“Don’t ask me. I didn't even know he was going out. He did this on his own” Shasha said with slightly more anger than she meant to express.
“Touchy subject” Zee said and took a seat next to Maraha on the couch.
“What did you bring?” asked Maraha
“Chips, popcorn, some wine and a silly romantic comedy. You know, typical girls' night. I guess you can join”
“I feel so honored”
“I got the real stuff” Shasha said, coming in with hamburgers and a large plate of fries. Almost as soon as she set them down Maraha grabbed for one and ate hardly.
“Geeze, I guess someone needs some grease,” Zee said. She watched him eat, she noticed his hands. His knuckles were scraped, under his nails was dark. She looked him over again, he did not look hungover, he looked like he had been in a fight.

Joining Nia and Elise at the tiny breakfast table, I watched Marks happily working in his kitchenette making the most extraordinary spread of food: back bacon, sausage links, fried eggs, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, toast, hash browns, and probably a few other things I didn't spot amid the piles. There wasn't room on the table even for all of our plates, so we filled them from the counter and held them to eat. No coffee, still, but we made do with tea.
Nia used two teabags and left them in the mug
while she drank it. I tried not to watch Marks wincing every time he looked in her direction.

“Think he’ll be able to find out what’s happening in this town?”
“You know him too well to need to ask that.” Fox laughed.
“True. It’s nice that the three of us are finding our rhythm.” “Finding more than just rhythm.” Av’ry deposited a tray on the table. “Steak sandwiches and cider.”
“Bless you.” Mikiva gulped the hot cider, trying to banish the chill from her bones. “And gossip, I hope?”
“Obviously.” He took a bite of his sandwich and slid into the chair next to her. “The front is a few dozen kilometers from here. Neither side has ventured this far into the marshlands to conquer the little villages yet. Maybe they never will. Not much tactical value here.
“But there are scouts from both sides skulking around. Asking questions. They’ve put wanted posters up in the town square. Two guesses who is on them.”
“Should we be moving on, then?” Mikiva asked.
Av’ry shrugged. “Kitsa gave me the impression that the town is deeply uninterested in helping either side. The flyers were defaced pretty thoroughly the day they went up and no one has paid much attention since. As long as we don’t draw attention to ourselves, we should be fine for the night.”
“Wouldn’t asking about it draw attention?”
“Not the way I do it.” Av’ry grinned his best boyish grin.

“You want to feed the enemy… or something?”
“We want to feed two starving people, yes. I think we had been hoping it wouldn’t be too much trouble for you. But we can rethink once you’ve seen the world for yourself. There’s no need to push if it’s not feasible.”
“I just have to swim down, right?”
“It’s a big ocean, very pretty!” Fei grinned. Her own Core Common was rustic and clumsy, but still perfectly understandable. Where did she come from, to use Libralogue so fluently but not the tongue of the Forge?
“Uh-huh?” said Petra.
Fei nodded, and her eyes shone bright. “I want to swim too! But I can’t swim deep. I don’t have your… um…”
The cat reached up her sticky hands and patted at her round breasts, which made Petra flinch with surprise. But then Liera was leaning in with a flour-coated mug of water for her.

A bit of Bráthal backstory. He wanted to become a Druid for … reasons. 🥺

- Brother’s Keeper, book one of my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power.

The Linduen Druids found him almost worthy
enough. Almost. Crushed and bewildered, Bráthal found within himself the strength to insist they did not send him away empty. So instead of initiating him into the Mysteries, they'd agreed to make him a
healer, a helper, a LOCAL minister of sorts. They'd trained, conditioned, and sanctified him specifically to save life. After a cycle under their tutelage, Bráthal departed Linduen unable to stand idle and watch
someone die. How could Maledin still expect him to be able to destroy?

Before the pilgrimage, certainly. Now? He
was a fool. By making the pilgrimage, he'd set
himself at odds with his God-given purpose. More precisely, the Linduen Druids had.

Fun fact: since August of 2017 I have ridden Arabian horses over 3100 recorded miles mostly in mountain backcountry (off my current phone app) … we started the mountain riding in earnest in early spring 2016, and a lot of riding was also unrecorded or lost.

Even in Book 2, Chloé still loves pizza, though in this scene she’s taken Beth to Pizza Hut instead of a quality local restaurant

(Also, Beth not liking pepperoni isn’t just a random character quirk… there’s an important backstory there)

There had to be some kind of local place less horrifying than this that makes a pizza that tastes less like total trash. Still, it's better than anything I'd get in Florida. I reach to the center of the table and take a slice from the cheese pie that already has the three slices that Chloé grabbed missing.
"I got cheese specifically for you," she adds. Chloé always prefers pepperoni. I... do not. But I appreciate that Chloé is looking out for me, even if calling my parents would be wholly unnecessary.
