- Brother’s Keeper, my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power
perhaps reopened it. "You are more arrogant than your damned cousin. And your tongue wags looser than a Keledrath midwife's—" He stiffened, stared toward the tent. "Stop it!" Wrapped in a blanket, Rushak clung to the center pole, shivering against it. “Please, don't argue." "Language," Cerel observed. "Concise, and to the point." He winked at Rushak, and then raised an eyebrow at Drisal. "Only attend to what I have said." Drisal answered him between clenched teeth, gesturing with the jar toward their dying fire. "If I attend to anything more, bits of this jug will mingle with bits of your BRAINs in those ashes." He limped toward the tent, and Cerel stooped to pick up a stick from the fire before following. Twilight was failing, the cold settling for the night like a giant, roosting bird of ice. Drisal would need help with that leg. Brother's Keeper A.C. Turek

Just Rushak today: Baseline Rush wouldn’t break a promise, even if the cost to himself for keeping it turns out to be high.
I can’t speak for post-BK Rush however; I’m just not sure.
He’d always be careful not to make a promise he wasn’t confident he could keep.

The pod lid fits so closely I can’t even lift my hands up to my face. I weakly beat on the glass-like material that makes up most of the pod lid. The grey alien looks at me with those huge black eyes as the pod comes alive around me. I start smelling something vile and my mind begins to slow. I still catch a glimpse of a dozen other figures, figures that could only be other aliens from the very numerous and very variable array of shapes on display, from a centaur like being to a vine plant form and what looks like a giant ant. They rush into the room and tackle the grey alien to the floor, proceeding to bind its short arms behind its back, and only then do I realise that they’re all wearing variations of the same clothes. Black and green. The term ‘space cops’ drifts over my mind, slowing down as it does with the rest of my brain. I beat weakly at the glass and try to yell for help, but my words slow down. “Help me! He…lp…m…e…” I see one of the officers, the centaur being, walk towards my pod, but he’s going so slowly. His three eyes stare at me with a deeply furrowed brow. All the colour drains from my vision, then all the light and then eventually everything.

Av’ry wasn’t sure what to do with that information, so he opted to simply let the creeping dread slowly crush the breath from his lungs. It was going well so far. Fox snapped her fingers, finally pulling his gaze away. “Focus, Ave. We have to get this done before anyone notices the guard is gone, or we are in real trouble.” “What is that?” he asked. It was a stupid question. Of course, he knew what it was, but his brain wasn’t yet up to the task of forming it better. Fox sighed. “Ok, short version. Also ain’t my fault y’weren’t more specific.” “You sound as though you’re feeling better, at least.” He crouched down in front of the younger man – then noted Sabbat’s expression and shifted to sit cross-legged on the floor instead, which seemed to be received at least a little more warmly. “How’re your legs?” “No fuckin’ better, not for want of fuckin’ tryin’.” “Ah.” He’d been hoping for somewhat better news, but then again, that seemed to be in relatively short supply at the moment. *Though, if that’s the case, I’m even more impressed – and confused – by the fact that you managed to get yourself out of the bath without waking me up.* “Cervanso,” Sabbat said, apparently in answer to the question Archer hadn’t quite found the words to ask. He tipped his head backwards towards the door through into the other room. “Said she’d wait in there ’til y’woke up.” It made a certain amount of sense that it’d been Viola who’d helped – out of all the other members of their band, she was the one who Sabbat seemed to tolerate the most – but, Archer had to admit, it was still somewhat surreal given their first encounter had involved him threatening to cut her throat and her trying to brain him with a basin. *Then again, there’s been a lot of water under the bridge since then. And if anyone was going to form a friendship off the back of trying to kill each other, it’d be those two.*

“The grounds?” Caladon gestured down the corridor. “Straight on, then right. Turn left at the end of the corridor. You’ll find a postern door at the end of the passage.” Ess followed the direction of his hand, deliberately avoiding Lysa’s thin-lipped glower. She dared to breathe, the stone beneath her feet solid again. She might still live to see another sunrise. After what she’d done to Talissa, there could be no going back. “Right, left, postern door,” she whispered, nodding to herself, then: “Thank you. You’re most kind.” Caladon raised his eyebrows. “Are you sure you want to explore the gardens again? You won’t find any unsuspecting widowers out there this time.” That hurt. More so when Lysa let out a breathy laugh. Ess was already speaking before her brain caught up. “How about sea creatures?” “Pardon?” “Any barnacles?” Caladon hesitated, his eyes narrowing. “Barnacles?” “You know, those little shells that attach themselves to stationary objects. Rocks. Ships.” She flicked him a glance, up and down. “Other large, oblivious things. Persistent little blighters. Rather sad, actually. What sort of a life is that? Desperately clinging to something that doesn’t even notice you.” She held a straight face; all the more difficult with Lysa huffing over by the archway.

I find myself opening Internet Explorer also subconsciously. I am now sitting on the landing page of Lycos messaging boards. With one twitch of my finger I could reach into the electronic void and know I am not alone. I can have all my biases confirmed. I can tell everyone about the God in the woods. I can find others chosen like me. Our rational brain craves knowledge, to understand, to not be alone in our ignorance. The temptation hits me on a primal level. Our species should not have this power. It will be our undoing. I close the Web browser. The last thing I need is strangers telling me things I already know. I instead anesthetize myself with a few rounds of Minesweeper, on custom difficulty of course. Bringing order to the grid, slowly methodically making everything safe for my imagined troops, calms me. Here I have the power to make everything alright.

A snippet from Ellamir by C A Malin: As she said these last words, she threw up her hand towards the door, and Nicholls, in response, caught her by the wrist; his face had taken on such a look of utter malice, and it was with such force that he sought to return her bodily to the settle, that she quailed momentarily. His free hand was reaching for his pocket, and drawing out a little scroll: as he shook it open, and began to chant in an unknown tongue, Hannah felt her resolve falter. She had not the strength to fight him physically, nor to resist the enthrallment of the strange words which rang now in her head. Her knees began to weaken and her vision clouded, her blood pounded in her ears, and some unknown voice spoke out of the confusion, telling her to submit, and it would all be over without any more suffering. But somewhere around her hammering heart, she still had a single ounce of determination, and with that, she filled her lungs, forced open her mouth and screamed as best she could: “MAQINE!” It was as if she had uttered a Word of Command: in the same instant, the elegant bow-seat window exploded inwards, disintegrating violently into prettily carved matchwood and a thousand shards of flying glass. Pieces of torn damask curtain accompanied the shattering sound of destruction that echoed through the room and shook Brother Nicholls with such force that he let go of Hannah’s wrist and dropped the scroll to the ground. In the ruined portal, amid swirls of sunlit sawdust, stood the towering figure of Maqine: in her left hand were the burning remnants of a Spell of Force; in her right, a gigantic crossbow taut with a loaded bolt; and on her face, a look of contempt and purpose and hatred that Brother Nicholls could not hope to withstand. As he perceived her through the cloud of dust, he let out a strangled cry and staggered backwards. “Demon!” he screamed, his face contorted with terror, “Hellspawn!!” “You fucking bet,” said Maqine.

A coldfire silence engulfed the grove, and Kraghtol could see Valir’s face working under his pale skin. Finally, he sighed. It wasn’t his usual theatrical sigh, meant for everyone around to hear clearly. It was a quiet and personal sigh, like that of a battle lost he wasn’t sure he even wanted to win. “By the stars. You will be the end of me. Fine. I’ll come. But first, tell me the truth about why you need to go there.”

Her breathing hitched. Her assistants were gone, swallowed by the expanding sphere before they could even scream. Only she remained, clinging to the shattered console, her mind racing with the calculations that had led to this. She wanted to conquer the dark dimension, to use its energy, and now its sheer, overwhelming indifference was conquering me. An infinite, crushing pressure settled in her skull. It was the presence of the Eldritch God, but it had no form, only a terrible, perfect knowledge that flooded her consciousness. You⋅sought⋅to⋅wield⋅the⋅fundamental⋅truth⋅of⋅non−existence It wasn’t angry. It was merely stating the pathetic reality of her overreach. She had treated its dimension like a resource — a tool to be scaled up.

I would not want you under my spell even in a *thousand* years.” “Well, there has to be an explanation! Why else would I be tempted by you?” *“Tempted?”* Elias bristled. “Is this about the bath? I thought you were fast asleep!” “I find that hard to believe,” he retorted. “Are tactics like that how you destroyed other men back in Eden Hollow? Is that how you get them under your spell? Is that how you influenced Avery Miller? Do you plan to seduce *him,* as well?” A sharp sting struck across his face. Elias glared at him as he slapped him, his eyes glistening. “You *sicken* me,” he muttered, his voice breaking. “You know *nothing,* hunter! Nothing! You have no right to make claims about me when you refuse to change your mind on *anything!”* “I don’t have to. You wear your intentions plain on your sleeve.” “What?” He clenched his fists, the room growing colder. *“Here* are my intentions. I want *nothing* to do with Eden Hollow! I *hate* them! I hate *all* of them! It was *them* that destroyed me! It was *them* that broke me and tempted me! It was *him* that abandoned me and ruined my life. He took *everything* from me!”

Pahaliah took a slow, deep breath and stared at the wallpaper across the hall from where they’d stopped to answer the dragon’s prayer. The wallpaper ran the length of each hall in the block, a silvery gray with golden, shimmering stars that appeared made of thread. They closed their eyes and felt the space around them, looking for the nearest Priests or Devils. Down the hall, near the corner, they found Daniel instead. With a mental gasp, Pahaliah pulled their senses back inside their head. “You need to be careful,” Daniel said, his voice a deep, vaulted echo in the Priest’s mind. Heart sinking, Pahaliah started down the hall toward the Angel. When the Priest reached the corner they stopped, just short of the turn, steadying their suddenly racing heart. Outwardly calm, Pahaliah leaned forward, eyebrows up innocently, looking around the corner to where they sensed Daniel. The Angel’s short, silky white hair, his pale stubble, and narrow eyebrows all nearly glowed in the soft light of the hall, seeming to float over the darkness of his skin. Dark eyes greeted the Priest’s gaze but Daniel’s expression remained neutral. Without saying anything else, the Angel turned away, his white open robes twirling artistically in his wake as he disappeared down the corridor. Pahaliah took a deep, cleansing breath, and sighed, leaving a growing tension behind as they turned in the opposite direction. Shielding their thoughts, the Priest started for the central tower. It was time to make an appearance.

So... this is a bit of an strange moment. I don't really explain what, exactly, happens when Aubergine is in a trance like this. It's one of those things that I have to leave to reader interpretation because the truth is simply too strange
I’ll play this one for you from now on. Come find me. Aubergine sent the message as clearly as he could, then appended his friend’s name. He knew how much that boy loved being called by his name. Iom’ren… For as long as I know you draw breath, I will fight to be at your side again. We will meet one day, and I’ll stand behind you as you play this song. I will wrap my arms over your shoulders while I let this song lull me into serenity. I love you more than you can imagine, Iom’ren. Don’t forget about me… In any dominion. In any timeline. In any nightmare your soul wanders in, I will be your constant companion. The Bond faltered. Aubergine’s mind blurred like he’d been dosed with Sleep, when his brain could not focus on a single subject no matter how hard he tried. His fingers never stopped playing the revised rhapsody even when his mind didn’t know what came next. He instinctively knew, and he could not have explained where or how he learned it. It wasn’t as if he had ever hit random keys before and invented such a beautiful song right on the spot. He doubted he could do it again if he tried. Aubergine’s fingers moved like he was possessed, like the song was not his, but rather that of some soul in a far-away dominion giving him this gift of strength and courage. Of love, light, and family.

We need someone with actual brains to help us.” She gave his ear another tug as she dragged him down to the Chief’s office. Casually, she walked into the office with Michael in tow, still pulling him by the ear. “John! How’s my favorite security chief doing? Did you lose weight? New aftershave? Perhaps you got a new tie?” Her compliments fell on deaf ears as John looked up at her from his stack of papers. He took a deep breath and folded his glasses. “No. No. And, also no. Amy, I’m extremely busy. I have to make a speech at the festival, and I don’t have time for any questions.”

A little silly scene from #Tenement, my dystopian mystery about people living in an infinite building.
“My Granddad reads me poetry sometimes,” she went on eagerly. “He’s got whole books full of poems. I’m trying to learn them all by heart. Would you read me yours?” “Ah, er.” Kazuo had been scooching away from her little by little as she spoke, angling his body stiffly away as if she had some contagious disease. But Nat, oblivious, kept on scooting closer, closing the gap between them. I wondered if Kazuo was going to keep scooching until he fell off the end of the bench. “It’s um.” He coughed. “I mean—it’s not finished.” “That’s okay,” she said. “No, no—it’s not any good. Really.” “Oh, I’m sure that’s not true.” She gave him a gentle smile. “My dad says each of us is our own worst critic. You’re probably just being too hard on yoursel—” “No!” His voice cracked a bit. “No, it’s terrible. Just—hot stinking garbage. I only wrote it as a joke, see. It’s stupid.” “Well, I like jokes,” she pressed. “No, you wouldn’t like it, trust me,” he said desperately. “It’s not funny, it’s stupid. Just really gross, and—stupid. It’ll make your brain melt out your ears.” “Wow.” I grinned. “That sounds real bad.” “Yeah, it is,” he agreed. “Now you’ve built it up so much,” I said, “I feel like you have to read it to us, so we can see if it’s really as bad as you say.” Kazuo gave me a look that said he was going to make me suffer a slow, painful death at some point in the near future.
