I began a new bone, carving the first line into it. When I counted my pile, I had fifteen complete bones with twenty-four marks each. Starting this meant the three-hundred and sixty-first night since I started keeping track. Upon completing this bone… we would be approaching a year since we went missing as far as we could tell. It could be considered a miracle that we survived this long, but that would ignore our teamwork and labor. Neither of us could have done this on our own. Setting the bone down, I watched Etti from the cave entrance try to split wood with the axe I made several weeks ago. Even if he was still a thin, bookish man, there was strength and confidence building in his limbs that he never would have gained had we not met, had this not happened. It looked as though he was having some level of success for a change.

Most of the undead had been silenced and dispatched during the carnage of the battle. In those moments of observing Bedlam, I noticed the animated bodies did not bleed red. It was black. I thought nothing of it originally, assuming it was the necromancy festering within their bodies over countless days, weeks, or possibly months. But as the moments continued to pass, there was a foul, sulfurous smell overtaking the salty odor of the sea. It was not corruption swimming in their maligned bodies; it was oil. The oil had been seeping out and covering the bodies of Krale, Paladins, and the entirety of our ship’s deck.

Everyone always hated playing cards with Kazuo. He loved it that they hated it. “Alright, Noah.” He stroked his chin. “How about this? You go in there, mm, ten paces? And I’ll let you keep the Nwissy for a week.” “Five paces, and I keep the Nwissy for good.” He winced. “Oh now, Noah. If you’re going to be that way about it, we can just forget it. I don’t care about you going in there that much.” “You guys!” Jon growled. “I really don’t think anyone should be—!” “Alright, fine,” I backpedaled. “How about I go in... twelve paces, and you let me keep the Nwissy for... a month?” “Deal!” We shook on it.

Bobby counted heartbeats, but grandfather didn’t look like he was about to start laughing. No one jumped out from behind the bushes with candid cameras. Those words, “it’s all real”, rushed through his mind like a light burning through the spectres of insanity. He had known his whole life. He breathed in deep and closed his eyes as the revelation sank in, readjusting his confused memories as the knowledge made its way to his core. Not just for the past week, but through the years. Those little breaks in the pattern of normality he’d noticed around his house over and over again. His mother’s jokes about goblins. The exceptional intensity of her freakouts when a pan went out. She hadn’t just been afraid of the dark when Bobby was out late, had she? He had no idea what a Joro-thing was, but he was willing to bet it was some kind of giant puppetteer bug. And elves, riding bikes and whooping like Indian braves? That was too crazy to have been a real delusion. As his assumptions about what was real shattered one at a time, reality opened up to him. Dominos fell in his head one after the other, squashing the last doubts, but sowing so much uncertainty, and Bobby started getting annoyed. He was sick and tired of being the least ancient and powerful creature in the room, the clueless one who couldn’t rescue his mother. So, he opened his eyes and clenched his fist. He took two steps towards his grandfather. “How old is my mother?” “Bobby, I’m not stupid enough to tell you how old your mother is. Not even in the fanciest of fairy universes.”

5’7” he wasn’t the tallest in his class, nor the shortest, thankfully. But he dutifully did his course-work at school – most days – he came home every night and did his homework. But at night, he dreamt of dragons. For as long as he could remember, he had dreamt of a beautiful, golden dragon. In his dreams they soared together across the skies. Then he woke up and had to live through his day, day by dreadful day. Most evenings he enjoyed reading his books, every week he stopped by his library and lent new books. Fantasy and science fiction were his favorite genres. He waited at home until his father also left, then waited a little while longer still. When the clock finally struck 10, he went out the gate and walked the few streets from his house to the diner just by the plaza shopping center, I feel like a ‘McD’ breakfast today. So that’s where he headed first. After he finished with his breakfast, he knew that the Plaza was open. So, he decided to enter the shopping center and browse through the various shop displays. He had no intention of buying anything – just – not stay home. The security guy kept an eye on him, he probably knows I’m supposed be in school – or he thinks I’m a punk… Either way he didn’t care. He took the escalators up to the cinema to see whether or not they had any new films showing. Well, like they are going to have any good films on at 10 am, but he tried.

- Brother’s Keeper, book one of my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power.
They skirted the lake's edge until it opened to the River, and as they picked their way along the bank, he stubbornly held his peace. She would have to begin, for she had imposed the silence between them. Not the strained, stilted ache of these passing minutes, but rather the long silence of WEEKs tense and drenched with the unsaid, heavy as a mudslide about to dislodge. Now that silence weighted his steps, sucking him into a morass of confusion. At times the aching sparkle of the River threatened to pull him free, and then a shaft of sunlight would set her hair afire. Just when he thought himself slain by the need to touch it, she veered from the sun-drizzled bank into the brooding Forest shadows. Brother's Keeper A.C. Turek

We’ll find more soon, I am sure.” Carmine smiled. “Easy for you to say, you aren’t the one working hundred-hour weeks.” Carmine shrugged. “We just have to cast a wider net. We will find people. And if we don’t, we can reach out to the other enclaves, maybe they have some to spare.” “I hope so. I need a vacation. Somewhere sunny.” I wasn’t holding out hope; the other enclaves were probably no better off than we were. “Wouldn’t that be nice?” Carmine commiserated. “Somewhere with nude beaches, maybe.” “Don’t you get enough nudity in your day-to-day life?” “You can never really have enough nudity.” I sighed. “I’m going to the target range. I’ll see you later, Carmine.” The incubus turned and sauntered off. I watched him go. He carried himself with the easy grace and assurance of a practiced predator, which he was, in a way, so perhaps that wasn’t surprising. But maybe it was why I always had trouble turning my back on him. Once he was out of sight, I continued on my way to the basement.

Ozanna I learned a lot in our first week of travel. First, the trip from Cudcona to the North Road was faster by nearly two days with a single carriage instead of a full caravan. Second, the older knight in charge, Steffon, had a beautiful baritone singing voice and • an unfortunate stomach ailment. He was also sweet on Judith. Third, Judith was having none of it. And finally, undistracted paranoia does not pair well with long, boring carriage rides. One would think the former should settle the latter, but I still couldn't shake the feeling that something was off, and I was fit to climb the walls. I just couldn't put a finger on the source of my wariness. Perhaps it was the others' pointed avoidance of the princess that left me uneasy. And the poor girl was nearly catatonic, just watching the trees outside her window. She didn't speak or move unless directed, and even then, I had to lead her by the hand. The worst part, though, was that nobody else seemed to care.

The distant voices were swelling now in number and volume, some high, almost impossibly high, some deep and resonant. It was most unlike the singing of the congregation at the Lady's temple, far superior even to the choirs that sometimes accompanied Her Sunday devotions. It seemed of the landscape, evoking the trees and the river and the grass, and of the sky, carrying upon the light evening airs and welcoming the vast blue cloak of night that followed in the golden wake of the setting sun. The wind was dying away, and it seemed as if all the countryside had ceased its whispering to listen to the song of the elves: even the sheep had fallen quiet. "They were at it last week, too," said Maqine in a low voice, "but that was well after sunset, almost midnight. Probably singing to the stars: they love trees and stars most, you see. Come on, let's get a bit closer." Without Maqine's reassuring presence, Hannah would certainly have gone no further, but her new friend's authority on the matter of Elves was reassuring - she promised it was most unlikely that they would see one - so they left the silent sheep and set off slowly in the direction of the singing, which seemed to emanate from up where the deep green curtain of forest was draped over the northern slope of the valley. Hannah walked as if in a dream; she hardly dared breathe. It was as if the beauty and expressiveness of the words themselves, woven into such a haunting harmony, infused the landscape with a depth of colour that, rich as it already was, became so much richer. The countryside seemed to glow intensely with the golden solar rays, and then, as gold began to fade to evening grey, a flash of silver low on the horizon drew Hannah's gaze. A great star was rising, emerging from the last light of the dying day and flashing out brilliantly, just above the treetops. All at once, the song of the elves changed, becoming yet more complex and beautiful, a joyful hymn of celestial reverence.

“Oh, hey! That’s not fair!” The voice of the creature howled as Parsimony brought it closer to Boulder, who shook Dollop at it. “I’ve done my bit. By lore, you’re supposed to let me go!” The creature struggled, but Boulder would bet on Parsimony’s knitting skills over any possibly murderous fae creature any day of the week. Except Sundays. She never knitted on Sundays. There was always far too much to do. She held the creature in a tight grip and no matter how much he struggled, he wasn’t getting away from Boulder’s dear wife. He knew that feeling. Not that he had ever even considered getting away. Well, perhaps once, at eight years old, but it was surprising how fast an eight year old can accept the inevitability of a future marriage with the right kind of stare boring into him. Pippy had inherited that stare.

Do you understand?” “Perfectly, although I’m not entirely sure on what ‘fuckery’ would entail exactly,” Rondu comments. “I’ll tell you later,” Driona says and stands up off of the couch, in which she has created a sizeable divot. “I still have your box communicator thingy, I’ll let you know when we’re available for a tour of these facilities, should be a week after we get back to our homes to move some things around. And you!” Joey says, pointing to me. “Who, me?” “Yes, you! Day after tomorrow, dinner at our house! No blowing it off this time! We have things that need discussing!” “I’m making pot pie!” Warren says cheerfully, and my mouth instantly starts to water. Cynthia’s eyes roll, but she has half a smile plastered on her face as she does so. “Well twist my rubber arm why don’t you?” I say and stand up off of my chair. As first meetings go, this could have gone worse…

He trailed off, glaring down at his boots as though they’d personally offended him. *You want a hand up, but you’d rather die than ask for that with someone else in the room.* He might not have been able to do anything to heal Sabbat’s legs, or slow the progression of what the box was doing to him, but there was something he could do. “Viola?” “Yes?” “There’s a dressing gown hanging on the back of the bathroom door. Can’t-“ And then Caine’s hand shot out and grabbed the front of his shirt. *Fuck!* Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the other Turned’s free hand move, faster than it should’ve done, too fast to dodge back, but he’d been grabbed like this before, more than once, and there was more than one way to get out of it, and when dodging away was out of the question, nothing said you couldn’t dodge in. *And you ain’t made of iron, for all you hit like it. Which means there’s a couple of places I* know *you’re fucking vulnerable.* He threw his weight forward, head down and brought his right knee up *hard* between Caine’s legs with all the power he could put into the blow. *There!* Something crunched against his skull, hot and wet, and something a good deal softer smashed against his kneecap, and Caine let go of him and staggered back and away, blood pouring from his ruined nose, hands instinctively down to protect his groin from another attack.

With a nod from the queen, Miatiy gestured for Nitara to come closer. She did, and she looked into the Font of Insight, an ornate silver bowl fitted atop a chalice-shaped glass platform and filled with dark water. Squiggles rippled from one side of the basin to the other. Nitara frowned at them. She had not spent much time with the Fountain, certainly not as much as the High Priestess or the queen, but she knew that was not normal behaviour. “Earlier this week, I sensed an anomaly in the Veil. The Font showed me these shapeless forms, but I could not understand what they meant. I thought it could be an enchantment Aunt Pryaik had set up during her time as High Priestess, so I checked her notebooks. And I found it.” Miatiy swallowed, her gaze wandering towards the Font as if she expected a monster to emerge from it at any moment. “During the Bloody Year, she cast a tracking spell, and now it’s giving off a signal. I swear I reviewed her notes a hundred times, and they match with the forms in the water.” She took a deep breath, her eyes remaining closed for a moment, then she said, “Datusha is back.”

At this point the slide is of a typical Soviet poster except the people in it have their pants down revealing different coloured and patterned underwear. "She currently owns and runs Clownface Enterprises which is the largest manufacturer of glitter in the world. “Clownface Enterprises lists its world headquarters as a Big Top situated on the bed of the Atlantic Ocean. "This may be a joke, she is a clown after all. "Clownface has been hoarding supplies of glitter for years now, sending glitter prices sky high. Primary school kids have had to go to the black market to finish their craft projects. "More worrying still, Professor Hans Wurst Antliker, who was close to perfecting a way of building a death ray using glitter, has been kidnapped."

Hurting helpless creatures is the surest way to make Lawcket angry.
He's quick to defend any creature hurt in his sight, no matter if it means making himself the victim of the abusers.

He'll also lash out when he's accused of not caring.

“Your dragon was looking at your sister like a hunting cat.” Mesellah's face was aflame, her eyes wide with anger that made Lawcket speechless, as she carried Lelliddy back across the garden. Lawcket stood, unable to move, and barely managed to swallow over the lump in his throat. He wanted to protest, to say it wasn't true, but he couldn't even open his mouth. “Come in, you devil of a child,” Mesellah ordered harshly, carrying the screaming toddler past Lawcket and into the house. Lawcket felt heat rise in his face and spread over his whole body. For a moment longer he couldn't move. Then he bolted for the house. “That's a lie.” Mesellah turned to him, her expression twisted with disgust. “I didn't expect to hear that. I thought you cared about your sister more than this.” She paused for a moment. “My heart is still hammering in my chest so hard it hurts, and here you are protesting that your carelessness about your sister's life doesn't matter.” That was more than Lawcket could take. He turned and fled the house barely managing to refrain from slamming the door, knowing his family couldn't afford having to fix broken doors. He didn't even seek Looccup. Right now, he couldn't bear even her company. She would be just a reminder of what he was upset about, even though it wasn't one hair her fault. All he wanted at the moment was to not even exist. He simply ran, volting himself over the garden fence, and continuing to run until he found himself alone surrounded in nothing but trees. He vaguely remembered Mesellah screaming his name, as he landed from fence, but he'd barely noticed in the heat of his desperation to get away. Too out of breath to cry, Lawcket simply walked to a tree and wrapped his arms around it, leaning into the rough barked trunk. I can't even think. What am I going to do? He remembered that it wasn't that long ago that he wouldn't have been able to run like he'd just done.
