From the moment I met her & the day she came inside to let us know she was pregnant & needed a home...

Squeaks had a wonderful 15 years of living but passed away this morning after a month long battling an illness. Thank you to those who helped her with her last battle. ❤️
For some, marriage is a contemporary structure of the new family moving into their own space, away from parents/grandparents. Or at least across town. For others, the groom is the one to move & settle into the house of his new family & permitted to bring one relative.
#DecemberWorldbuilders
Hey there, #DecemberWorldbuilders! This week I'll ask you questions related to FAMILIES. Feel free to put it in the context of any characters you've made, or how your societies in general work. Today's Q: How do family units in general work? Are they generational homes? Who moves after marriage?

Looking for a book to give to someone you hate? Apparently mine is perfect for that! Add MARYNEAL 1962 to your tbr today & plot against your foes.

✨Great for people who hate indigenous rep, sapphic awakenings, shapeshifters, small town trauma, and the 60s✨

I've been disheartened by the trajectory of my career and so the feeling that it might be my last story published has certainly been circling my thoughts. But it's not my last written and it never will be. This is my vocation regardless of if I'm ever seen in print again.
Any other published writers live with anxiety over whether or not their last published story will be their last story ever?

So this year has kinda been a mess for me emotionally & I had to update the lady I sometimes ghostwrite for since we're going to clean up the 2 first drafts I wrote for her at the beginning of the year.

She sent me an email that she likes me as a person & is happy to work with me fast or slow ❤️😭

Just the general focus. I took a long break because of burnout and I really wanted to refill the well. It was helpful but this year ended up being very emotionally exhausting. My output has become slower and more scattered. It's getting better though!
#pretendpanel
#pretendpanel, I hope you find today's question just as engaging as yesterday's, even if the emotions might be a bit more negative surrounding the question...

December 6th: What was the most challenging aspect of writing for you in 2025?

Howdy, #DecemberWorldbuilders! What are some symbiotic or parasitic relationships that occur in nature in your world? Feel free to interpret this one broadly and talk about a character with a parasitic personality, if you prefer😁 Don't worry, I'm not grading you on how much biology is in your world!

Some of my book is a contemporary setting. Meds & diseases are what is common today. However this did remind me that I need to deep dive into my other world setting. I'm taking it for granted that it won't matter much to the plot... But it will matter to the characters!
#DecemberWorldbuilders
Good day, #DecemberWorldbuilders. Does your fictional world have any notable or unique diseases, medicine, or vaccination processes? What is healthcare like in your setting? Have your characters had to deal with a disease?

I’m at the Mad Men office christmas party asking Stan and Peggy if they wanna get out of here and go to a second location (the Eyes Wide Shut orgy)
What's a fictional holiday party you would love to attend?

My answers:

--the Christmas party from Fanny and Alexander
--the Yule feast in Nicola Griffith's Hild
--the Baileys' "welcome home" party for Harry in It's a Wonderful Life
--the office party in Die Hard; I'm sure nothing will go wrong

My sophomore book was published this summer! So I'm very proud of that.

I'm also proud I pulled my next book from publication. The timing wasn't right and I want to do it justice. I'm proud of myself for making the jump even though it's left me in free fall.
#pretendpanel
Happy December #pretendpanel! I hope you don't mind reflective questions. I'm a fan of them. But no worries if you give this month a skip, I'll understand.

December 5th: What are you most proud of from your writing this year?

We know Matt liked to bake. So do I. But the act of sharing a recipe is even more special!

A couple years ago, around the holidays, he sent me a sticky gingerbread recipe. Even took the time to list the American ingredient substitutes!

The current series I'm working on is a high tech scifi... well, high for me because I'm dumb & I get wowed by spy gadgets from the Cold War. But there's layers to this world so some of the stuff is settled comfortably in Cattlepunk/Weird West level of tech.
#DecemberWorldbuilders
#DecemberWorldbuilders! What is the "level" of technology in your fictional world? Is it a low-tech fantasy? A high-tech sci-fi? Or something in-between? Maybe something outside the tech progression of human history. Did they invent anything ahead of us in time? Any inventions suspiciously absent?

I do a lot of cross stitching as one of my creative outlets. I know there is a history of stitching & knitting code into clothing. Many women did this during WW2 & I like knowing that I'm part of an art that lends itself to Nazi rebellion

Matt said “finding joy in being a creative person is an act of rebellion.”

Share a creative outlet that brings you joy and/or feels like an act of rebellion.

My dream is to be able to pay rent 😅 but also have my characters & situations feel real & authentic to the readers. Like if they can come out on the other side feeling as though they can defeat their own monsters, that would be amazing.

#HorrorWritersChat Q3

This one is going to be hard.

One of the last things Matt asked us at Horror Writers Chat was to share a horror writing related dream.

This can be;
> an actual dream that inspired you.
> a dream you have for your writing career.

Interpret this any way you’d like.

Horror is a place where I can explore my own anxieties & fears. A place where I can push & prod the uncertainty & the hard questions. It's a space of liberation & introspection.

#HorrorWritersChat Q2
This is one of Matt’s favourite questions to ask us:

What does horror mean to you?
December 3, 2025 at 8:23 PM
I'm a Southern Gothic, Speculative, & Historical Horror author. Most of my work is inspired by my Choctaw-Irish heritage.

I didn't know Matt well but I saw that he was earnest & supportive & cared deeply for our community. That's the stuff that keeps on living.
