They rarely use the word soul for it, but the seat of consciousness, the part of a person that is separate from their physical body and persists after death (probably) certainly exists.

Perhaps a bit strangely, though, they have nothing to do with any extant religion. 🧵

Mages in my world operate more on a military system than an academic one, so mages who are especially skilled and talented typically have a high rank and lead other mages/soldiers in battle.

In this context, it generally comes down to who is most effective in combat. 🧵

“Shellryn’s gold teeth,” Av’ry breathed. “It really is you, isn’t it?”
With two quick steps, he closed the gap between them and folded her into a hug, lifting her off the ground.
“It’s good to see you, too, Ave.” Fox replied into his shoulder. “But there’s no reason to bring the Eleven into this.”
“Give me a break! I’ve never seen anyone come back from the dead before.”
“So, you’ve been saving the oaths for a special occasion?” She smirked.
“Maybe.” Releasing Fox from the hug, Av’ry took a step back, held her at arm’s length, and studied her for a long moment.
Then, he punched her square in the jaw. “Two years, Fox! I thought you were dead for two years!”
“Yeah. Sorry about that. In my defense, I am as surprised as you are that I’m alive.” Fox straightened, rubbing her cheek ruefully. “Nice right hook, by the way.”
“I held back,” he grumbled. “And don’t change the subject.”

Only three characters in the entire story (1500 year timeline) are considered "masters" of magic--one of them being Sangor, the god who invented it. According to his own rules, someone is a master of magic when they can create their own spells rather than learn ones already written 1/2

* Spine (fear/instinct)
* Intestines (desire/hunger)
* Lungs (will)
* Larynx (humor)
* Cerebrum (justice/morality)
* Heart (imagination/empathy)
* Cerebellum (memories)

As the dead go through the Deep World, the gods collect these organs & use them to judge your soul.

When she came to her senses, she was lying on a slab, with the old priest of Habuuket looming over her. Beside him stood Sister Eiappo. They were placing a variety of objects around her waist—small clay vessels, each molded in the shape of a different creature, to store the organs of her soul—praying ritual blessings over them one-by-one.

“Centipede, for the spine, where the instincts live,” said the old priest.

“Worm, for the innards, where desires live,” said Sister Eiappo.

“Twin butterfly cocoons, for the lungs, where the will lives.”

“Honeybee, for the throat, where the wit lives.”

“Beetle, for the forebrain, where wisdom lives.”

“Cricket, for the heart, where imagination lives.”

“Hermit crab, for the hindbrain, where the memories live.”

In #Charagma world, souls DEFINITELY exist, & everyone knows they do.

Not only because the great god El said so (and of course we can trust El!), but because you can actually see souls go to heaven or hell when they die.

Might change this writing, but this is the idea:

For an instant, there was a blinding flash, a glimpse—a glimpse of another world exactly like this one, but bright with dazzling light. A sound like a thousand voices singing one ethereal note in unison, and a beam like lightning shot from the old man’s body up into the ceiling of the house—through the ceiling, into the sky. His soul ascending to Shamayim, the heavens, to be with El until the end of time.

There was a flash of darkness, a glimpse—a glimpse of another world exactly like this one, but gray as ashes, siphoned of color. A sound like a thousand voices moaning one discordant note in unison, and tendrils of black ink shot out of the roof, out of the earth itself, to crawl in and out of Barbon’s body. His soul descending to Gehenna, the place of burning, to suffer untold torment until the end of time.

Since I've been posting MoKaM snippets for WIPSnips, I'll do it here, too 😂

This is on page 180 in my Word doc, to be clear. No idea what it is in the official paperback.

“It could have belonged to an Odonata,” I said. “Perhaps it was a child’s toy.” As soon as the words escaped my mouth, I realized how unlikely it was. It was so tiny, even to a child Odonata. It would be like me playing with something smaller than my fingernail.
Still, the idea of something being lost for God only knows how long, finally being found, instilled a sad sense of nostalgia within me. I pictured an Odonata child losing their favorite toy in the Hollow Void, never to see it again.

Tynan and their mom get into arguments about what Tynan is allowed to do. Loyenie wants Tynan to be a more normal child and just stay home and stay out of trouble. Tynan insists that they were born for a purpose and they must fulfil it soon.
