We'll probably never know but I am putting a 100% probability both reviewers used a chatbot to generate some slop to review the slop
UPDATE: The publisher intends to retract the paper, but insists it went through two rounds of review from two independent peer reviewers: nobreakthroughs.substack.com/p/riding-the... by @jacksonwryan.com. No word on how they will make sure this sort of thing never happens again.

people are angry that chatbots are being thrust on them; that the industry is unregulated; that it’s deskilling young people; is being used as a weapon against labor and popular gAI is built on theft of the work of millions of artists and authors.

You don’t get to demand civility.
Wow 80% bad-faith responses, and people lecturing the creator of Flask here and the creator of Django/datasette in the comments on why AI is useless for software engineering...
Is this platform still massively against AI or has it moved more towards acceptance?

We end on an appeal to our fellow psychologists:

"To sit idly by while deskilling and displacing of [our]selves is normalised [...] serves [solely] the technology sector, which avoids criticism and self-reflection and prefers pseudoscience and misinformation."

I used to handle interlibrary loans for a public library. ILL is a magnificent expression of the idea that readers deserve books, and books deserve readers. It’s libraries everywhere pooling their resources for the benefit of everyone.

Killing IMLS could have killed ILL.

This is great news. 📚

By definition, AI algorithmic engines repackage an aggregated, mathematically averaged version of what has already been thought & said. This means they are best seen as ideology machines: mechanisms built to recirculate the common sense of a social formation back to itself as though it is knowledge
📸 New research just out revealing disturbing problems with AI image captioning. AI models can now analyse both texts and images, and are trained on vast collections of human-created content spanning centuries. Some claims these models could soon help human historians interpret and explain the past.

the Dems keep operating like this cynical shit has no effect. It’s why their core voters don’t fucking show up. When they say “we fight for you” nobody believes them, because they constantly pull shit like this and say “what else are you gonna vote for.” But then people STAY HOME.
