Case A: 79 people died as a consequence of smart motorways (2010-2024). That's sufficient to pause the policy.
Case B: In the first year of the Welsh 20mph scheme 900 fewer people were injured. There's still contestation.

To ensure cars didn’t just take back ownership of Paris streets as the pandemic was ending (like they did in so many cities), Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social made sure that 60k parking spaces and many streets were permanently transformed with restaurant seating, people-places, greening, & bike-lanes.

IMPORTANT: The Dutch invest €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart govts do the math on investing in better mobility.
Let’s be clear— it wastes public money to NOT do it.

Thank you for this reminder, which actually needs repeating more frequently. The noisy few are in a definite minority but are still noisy. There's a word that describes this phenomenon which makes people think the noisy brigade are many, when they aren't. I can't remember the word.
Your infrequent reminder that things like 20mph limits and filtered streets are actually popular. Ignore the very noisy few.
In Ceredigion, out of a population of 71,500, only 16 people objected to any of the 20mph roads managed by the county. That's just 0.02%, and shows strong public acceptance of the default 20mph limit. #20splenty making Wales an even better place to be. bit.ly/43Tn4Xf
