We could do this in so many places...
we can do things differently, we just have to want to.

To celebrate #WorldStatisticsDay, we thought we'd share these interesting statistics on transport investment...

For every £1 invested, this is what the country gets back in wider economic benefits:

Roads 🛣️ ➡️ £2.50
Rail 🚆➡️ £2.50
Buses 🚍➡️ £4
Cycling, walking and wheeling🚲🚶‍♀️🧑‍🦽➡️£5.62.

Keep this in mind when people claim cars mean business — closing Central #Madrid to cars over holidays resulted in a 9.5% boost in retail spending on its main shopping street: STUDY.

There was also a 71% drop in air pollution.

Very impressive.
The before/after is remarkable. This is what we mean when we say "Life After Cars."

Like every city, despite vocal opposition, this multi-year study of an #Edinburgh street and cycling scheme shows massive benefits and increasing public and local business support.

Every city that delivers schemes well helps deliver social and economic benefits.

Today was one of my favourite lectures, on how evidence influences debates.

Case A: 79 people died as a consequence of smart motorways (2010-2024). That's sufficient to pause the policy.

Case B: In the first year of the Welsh 20mph scheme 900 fewer people were injured. There's still contestation.

Journalists call for language that recognises human agency, avoids speculation, & refrains from calling collisions “accidents” ... They remind journalists not to present vehicles as if they act independently, but to identify drivers

We must stop victim blaming after road deaths
The way in which these incidents are reported can make it seem that victims are the agents of their own demise, writes Ciaran Cannon

Trudeau named not reforming the voting system as his big regret. Starmer shouldn't repeat his mistake.

The stakes are now much higher than just who wins the next election.

When there's such a disconnect between how people vote and who wins seats, trust in democracy is at risk.

We need more pedestrian only streets!

They increase business and more importantly provide a great cultural space for the community to rally around

They also show that a community is willing to prioritize people over cars!

To ensure cars didn’t just take back ownership of Paris streets as the pandemic was ending (like they did in so many cities), Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social made sure that 60k parking spaces and many streets were permanently transformed with restaurant seating, people-places, greening, & bike-lanes.

There are “political people” here who tell our elected leaders they shouldn’t talk about safe, protected bike infrastructure, because it’s “not popular.”

Every poll shows that investing in bike infrastructure IS popular here.

And even if it wasn’t, ITS SMART PUBLIC POLICY.

Stop letting them win.

Public health committee doesn't talk nearly enough about the implications of policy that perpetuates car dependency.
“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.”

Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability & quality of life.

Common sense.

Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.
Paris said au revoir to cars. Air pollution maps reveal a dramatic change.
Air pollution fell substantially as the city restricted car traffic and made way for parks and bike lanes.

This needs to be said more frequently...
IMPORTANT: The Dutch invest €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart govts do the math on investing in better mobility.

Let’s be clear— it wastes public money to NOT do it.

Thank you for this reminder, which actually needs repeating more frequently. The noisy few are in a definite minority but are still noisy. There's a word that describes this phenomenon which makes people think the noisy brigade are many, when they aren't. I can't remember the word.
Your infrequent reminder that things like 20mph limits and filtered streets are actually popular. Ignore the very noisy few.
In Ceredigion, out of a population of 71,500, only 16 people objected to any of the 20mph roads managed by the county. That's just 0.02%, and shows strong public acceptance of the default 20mph limit. #20splenty making Wales an even better place to be. bit.ly/43Tn4Xf
