15th November and we're done. I threw maybe 10 or so out, but I ate precisely zero green tomatoes.

We spend a lot of time on the carrot, but quite often that means we either forget about the stick, or we're scared of using it...

You're never particularly popular if you say that out loud though...
Yet another evidence review argues very strongly that simply providing alternatives to driving doesn't reduce driving

This isn't surprising, if only thanks to habit. If I unthinkingly jump in my car for every trip (as many do), new buses won't change that

I heard this was coming a little while ago.

The biggest question for me is if/how they can sort the geolocation for end use parking. There are times when they're an absolute pest - especially around campus.

You can actually see the stress spike just before submission as I realised I'd forgotten to cost something...

...and then the HR crash afterwards back to the lowest HR ive seen all week...

Better to remain silent and be thought of a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt...
Nothing, NOTHING more fun on LinkedIn than seeing someone you think is silly getting dragged for not knowing simple things about something they claim to be an expert in. Nothing.

There are plenty of things about the academic job that are incredibly stress inducing.

Without fail, the job that sends my cortisol levels through the roof: writing grant applications.

Good morning.

Am I excited about my impending research leave you ask?

If you sent me a DM before, tinfoil hat as it might be, I'm not sending my private data to a third party i've never heard of. Email me and I'll sort you out.

I'm on research leave for the first half of 2026. I'd like to use some of that to do some of the reading I'd love to but never have time or head space.

I'd love your recommendations of books/papers you think I should be looking at.

Cycling/Active Travel especially, but also devolution/local govt.

Unless there's an unbreakably valid safety reason why not, all button-operated pedestrian crossings should activate the lights in pedestrians' favour instantly when pressed.

For a while now I've been making so many spelling mistakes that I've been wondering if I'm going mad. It turns out that the youngest child button mashed off the spellcheck in my settings...

Not convinced I've fixed it, mind.

That snake was in St Helens. It was ace!

My nan and grandad bought me a lego train from that Woolworths.
Huge animals made in wood, steel or fibreglass, these were beautiful works of art for children – made to be touched, climbed on, dived into and slid through.

The Poole animals were the first that Hand created and are among very few known to survive. Are you aware of any more? If so, get in touch!

I've had such a crap commute this morning, that I've written to my MP and Councillor.

I'm just a bloke trying to get to work, and I want to go home to my kids at the end of the day.

Our road culture is fundamentally broken.

A big chunk of those replies also makes you want to point out that now, using GPS they can apply speed limits and even geolock e scooters to stop inappropriate behaviour.

I've got a car on the drive that can do 120mph if I wanted to...
Until I die, I will never understand why so many motorists think that “having a car” should give you special protections from doing crimes.
Year one: "We can work it out as an estimate"
Year two: "Oh, look, lots of people are dodging the system!"
Year three: "We need to fit mandatory trackers to every car in the country."
Year four plus: "Why shouldn't tracker data be used in evidence? What have people got to hide?"
