friendly reminder that you didn't waste your year. any moments of happiness or comfort. any small accomplishments, they all matter. this has been a really hard year, and simply surviving is something to be proud of.

If you're using AI to write essays, eulogies, a text to your wife, I do think less of you as a person. Ceding your mental and creative abilities to a machine is an embarrassing thing and people should be ashamed to admit doing it in public.

...I no longer know how many years it takes an olive tree to reach maturity and bear a full crop, but I do know that it's several. This action has nothing to do with anything that is happening now. The only purpose it can serve is denying Gaza a future, and making it clear they don't care who knows.
Aid groups report that Israel is refusing to allow any olives or other “fruits or vegetables with pits or seeds that could be planted” into Gaza. They will only allow in pitted olives.
Israel’s new measures do nothing to stop the starvation crisis in Gaza, say aid workers
Humanitarian workers say airdrops and corridors to allow trucks into region have done little to stop the rising death toll

Pivot to video was such a curse. Now everything’s like obviously you’d rather watch a 40 minute video than read a sentence.

This clip goes around quite a bit, but it’s always worth noting that The Great Dictator premiered just 13 months after Germany invaded Poland. Chaplin doesn’t just use his voice for the first time, he breaks the fourth wall, too. He called on the people to stand up against fascism.
The first time Charlie Chaplin used his voice in a film, he wielded it to forcefully condemn the rising forces of fascism around the globe.

Will we listen to his words today?

Criterion — founded in 1984 — is courting a "new audience of cinephiles” via streaming.

And it’s working.

Criterion Channel “has grown steadily” — and created a "low-churn subscriber base” that has "eclipsed the company’s physical media business”.

How Criterion turned its film archives into a streaming powerhouse
The Criterion Channel refuses to employ Netflix-style algorithmic programming. That choice has courted a whole new audience of cinephiles.
