ANIMAL CRACKERS (1930) just entered the public domain and it's already on Tubi (and elsewhere).

I remember its 1979 TV premiere on CBS, after decades of unavailability due to rights issues.

I hope a new generation discovers the Marx Bros. now, just like I did then. #FilmSky #PublicDomain

50 years ago today (January 5, 1976) the best damned TV show ever - and Norman Lear's labor of love - debuted.

It caused an immediate uproar, and we never took our foot off the pedal. We did 325 episodes of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman in 18 months, and taped 2 shows a day to get the Holidays off. 1/

In this clip from the 1970 Oscar ceremony broadcast, Lionel Newman accepts his award for Best Adapted Score for HELLO, DOLLY!, characteristically cursing on live TV!
But the real highlight: Elmer Bernstein accompanying - and singing with! - Shani Wallis during the introduction.
Great stuff!

Sometimes, an artist's legacy is borne not by his individual triumphs, but by the impact he has on the artists with whom he collaborates.
In the history of film music, composer and conductor Lionel Newman, born on this day (1916-1989) is one such man.

I've been listening to "I used to run home from school to watch DARK SHADOWS!" stories for 40+ years.

But this is, without question, the best one I've ever heard.
A bit older than you. I remember that my mom would collect my twin brother and me from morning kindergarten and spread out a quilt on the living room floor so that all three of us could enjoy lunch, camping-style, while watching Dark Shadows.

i love this ad b/c this moment is arguably one of the greatest character debuts in tv history
I remember the day I first watched DARK SHADOWS in syndicated reruns on WNBC in 1982 at 4:30pm.

I had two thoughts as I watched the storyline slowwwwly unfold in atmospheric black and white: this is my new favorite show, and there's no way this is going to succeed on a network affiliate in 1982.

DARK SHADOWS returns to TV tonight — Sundays 11pm-2am ET on MeTV+.

But the mystery is: what storyline are they starting with?

MeTV+'s website lists the familiar introduction of Barnabas. But Frndly TV has it starting w/ the 1897 episodes, the zenith of the show's popularity in 1969. #ClassicTV

A Hitchcock-branded, Robert Arthur–edited paperback anthology for young readers, Spellbinders in Suspense, had “The Man from the South” in it, and I read it over and over and over when I was a kid. It remains to my mind the model of the sting-in-the-tail magazine story.
Tonight in 1960 — “Man from the South” aired on ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS.

Peter Lorre and Steve McQueen star as gamblers who make a macabre bet in this adaptation of Roald Dahl’s short story.

Looks like Disney has also failed to find a new streaming home for THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW and M*A*S*H.

Three of CBS's most iconic shows from the 70s are now not available on SVOD or AVOD platforms, as far as I can tell.
That stinks. I loved unwinding with an episode now and then. I saw MASH left Hulu on Thursday, and is no place else that I can tell either. Mary Tyler Moore also nowhere to be found, though its streaming presence has always been sporadic.

Instead of kids' movies in the 60s & 70s, my parents took me to revival-house classic-comedy fests, so I grew up on Marx Bros, Chaplin, Keaton, Laurel & Hardy, WC Fields, etc. I was lucky to have access because I lived in NYC; now everyone has access but few are interested.
