My profile picture honors Dr Wu Lien-teh & his pioneering work in Malaysia in 1910 on masking to prevent pneumonic plague. The French doctor Gérald Mesny who came to replace Dr Wu thought he knew better, refused to mask & died.

5 years 11 months ago, I become very concerned.

5 years 10 months ago, I wander my city, dazed, knowing what's going to happen soon.

5 years 9 months ago, I read an email that suggests anosmia is a symptom. I decide to do everything I can to not get infected. Still doing so.

And note: the dr. is wearing an N95 mask, not a leaky surgical mask, which allows airborne virus to flow freely in and out, and the surgical mask's material does not protect against viruses.

Patient came in with sore throat. While waiting for rapid Strep test result we glanced back at the Covid-19 RAT result: positive. Reminder that masking in health care makes sense, if you don’t want everyone in your waiting room to go home sick, your staff to get sick, and physicians to get sick.

There is NO FUCKING EXCUSE for this to be happening.

I had a baby die in my arms of pertussis some fifty years ago. It was a HORRIBLE death. But my fellow nurses said to me, "It's almost stamped out now, they're all getting the shots, we won't be seeing this again."

HOW THE FUCK ARE WE HERE. 😡
A third infant has died in Kentucky, KYDPH adds:

“These are Kentucky’s first pertussis deaths since 2018. None of the infants nor their mothers received the recommended pertussis vaccinations during pregnancy or early infancy.”

Not to say there wasn’t downsides and economic impact. But pls be fr. We can just say stay at home orders or quarantine.

The historical eradication of smallpox is misunderstood as a "vax only" success. Vaccines were crucial, but so were surveillance/testing and containment/isolation. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

So it was absurd to sell Covid eradication w/o respirator masks, test/trace/isolate, remote, etc.

If you're not masking and pretending the ongoing Covid pandemic is over, kindly shut the fuck up about vaccine hesitancy and vax rates. You are the one contributing to the problem and helping to dismantle public health! @juliadoubleday.bsky.social outlines it all very well here:
Liberals joined conservatives to mainstream anti-vax beliefs about viruses and public health
Viruses are bad for kids' health. Public health is a collective effort. Liberals no longer believe either.

Some folks have seen Prof Johnson's research into "cryptic lineage" in Covid ie, new variants that evolve in patients with extreme viral persistence. But he also has excellent tracking of other pathogens for select cities in the USA. Flu update linked.
What should we expect this flu season?

Here’s a forecast from a wastewater perspective (because sh*t don’t lie)

The time lag between detection of viral variants and deployment of new vaccines is far too long. This is egregiously true of Covid vaccines that come out midway through a NA summer surge, but it's also true of flu vaccines. Incredible how policy has shifted from "warp speed" to anti-vax ambivalence.
H1N1, H3N2, and FluB are all in the flu vaccines, but the H3N1 is a bit off from subclade K. I’m sure there will be some protection, but less than ideal.
There haven’t been many cases in the Northern Hemisphere so far, but what we’ve seen has been dominated by K.
