“If you resign as trustee, please tell people why,”‘said a friend. Here’s my story. #OCDSD should be investigated for governance dysfunction. Antisemitism is unchecked in #Ottawa and society. This is a cautionary tale about school boards and populist extremism.

Kaplan-Myrth: Why I resigned as a trustee from the OCDSB
Antisemitic comments and death threats from outsiders, coupled with an utter lack of support from inside the board, have forced my hand.

In happier news, it is our 27th wedding anniversary today. Jan 3, 1999, we braved the Toronto snowstorm of the century.

As much in love now.

Canadians are waking up this morning with our elbows up, in response to the invasion of Venezuela. Our own patriotism won’t safeguard us from US authoritarianism. Looking to Prime Minister Carney’s response. Thankful he has forged strong ties to the UK and Europe.

So long, 2025. Tested the limits of our personal and global resilience in myriad ways. Not a year that many of us will look back on fondly.

Have a safe New Year’s Eve. Wishing everyone a healthy, laughter-filled, calmer year ahead.

According to @who.int, 20 million children missed out on essential vaccines in 2024 due to conflict, supply disruptions, and a rise in vaccine misinformation. 2025 funding cuts severely disrupted global maternal care, vaccination, HIV prevention, and disease surveillance. Let’s do better in 2026.

Excited to begin the @harvardchansph Global Public Health Leadership Program this term. Primary care plays a public health role far beyond the care we provide to patients in our own clinics: We can communicate with populations locally and globally. In an age of disinformation, that role is vital.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate.

Canadians are awesome.

Happy 8th night of Chanukah.
Also, happy solstice.
May we all have more light than darkness from here on.

Happy seventh night of Chanukah

Sixth night of Chanukah. Difficult week for many reasons, for us, our friends and family, colleagues, and many people. Tonight we will light our candles and we will ground ourselves in the moment, in our space of calm and safety. Wishing the same for everyone else. Shabbat shalom.

So much influenza out there.

Tragically, 3 paediatric deaths in our city (Ottawa) because of flu so far this season.

Please get your flu shot. Everyone 6 months + is eligible and encouraged to do so.

Doesn’t matter whether it is a perfect match - it is helpful to reduce seriousness of illness.

Joined our synagogue to light the menorah for the third night of Chanukah on Canada’s Parliament Hill, joined by interfaith leaders. To our collective resilience and healing.

It is always kind when a non-Jewish patient remembers to say happy Chanukah. This year, Chanukah cards and kindness mean the world to us.

Happy second night to friends and colleagues around the world.

11 people in Australia were killed today by gunmen while they celebrated the first night of Chanukah at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. Targeted because they were Jews.

As Jewish families around the world, we place our menorahs in our windows. Our message to the world: Light will outlive the darkness.

This is a truly magical show. Highly recommend that you see it at Ottawa’s NAC (perfect for people of all ages). @kidkoala.bsky.social deserved a standing ovation for tonight’s puppetry, music, film.

Family docs in Ottawa just received a plea for help from our local children’s hospital: unprecedented volumes in the Emergency Department of children testing positive for influenza. Message to parents and primary care providers: Get flu shots out to the paediatric population!@ottawapublichealth.ca

Every infant who came through our clinic this morning for a check-up is up to date on routine vaccines, including RSV, Covid-19, flu. With double the number of paediatric hospital admissions this season in Canada’s capital city, it is a relief to know that our youngest patients are well protected.

Meanwhile in rural Quebec: -17 Celsius this morning, outside. Inside, reading the @margaretatwood.bsky.social memoir, Book of Lives (fabulous history of life in the Canadian bush, the early literary and arts scene in Toronto… and it makes me want to go back and reread her early works).

On Dec 6, we remember the massacre at l’Ecole Polytechnique and we acknowledge that gender-based violence is a pervasive issue: One woman or girl is killed every 48 hours in Canada (Canadian Femicide Observatory, 2022).
