THIS is what will cause the bubble to pop. Not the ethical or environmental concerns, much as I'm loathe to admit it 😩

The people saying "GenAI/LLMs are here to stay like Photography or Sewing Machines!" always forget that those things made EVERYBODY'S lives easier. Not SOME. Not MOST. EVERYBODY'S.
Generative AI is also causing me more work as a college professor, in teaching, research, and admin work.
So far AI is causing me more work.

One of my main responsibilities is to use a database to find certain things. This database used to have humans look at the webpage of a thing and then write a description.

Bad AI descriptions have led to an increase in false positives I need to sift through.

The reason debate is useless is you can't lose a debate unless you want to lose.

The argument doesn't matter if you decide you don't want to accept it. We're not Vulcans. We're not soulbound to Robert's Rules of Order. People can just say "Yeah, well fuck you I'm right."

And quite often, they do.

The idea that you will NOT be savaged if you post AI art is also laughable
There's such a weird series of nested conflations going on here.

Like, it seems that Alice wants to use AI to do art... so that she can post it on the internet for clout and praise, and Bob's advice is bad because beginners don't get praise and clout, but get nasty comments for being beginners?

for all the discourse about the nuance of what "AI" means or whether the tech is here to stay, there's a real simple filter for whether it's good or not:

do artists get paid to do creative, inefficient, meaningful work?

everything else is downstream from that really easy-to-solve problem

The corporations and CEOs are all "everyone's using AI!"

Meanwhile, no one ACTUALLY is, but they can't help themselves from jumping on to the latest hype train their peers have, while their audience and customers are telling them "don't do this very very very stupid thing, you idiot!"

The tech people like and value stays.

The tech people reject and dismiss goes.

We got rid of arguably superior stuff like Betamax and the Amiga just due to bad marketing. You honestly think this generative "AI" horseshit is going to survive our hate *and* being unprofitable?
“Love it or hate it it’s here to stay” is a crazy thing to keep saying about a technology. If people don’t like using something it doesn’t have to stay we’re not talking about bad weather here

Blocking trans kids from care is evil.

Its not 'caring'. Its not 'being a concerned parent'. Its evil.

Its staring someone who is telling your their truth in the eye and saying truth means nothing, and your ignorance means more.

Trans kids want to live. Deny them, and you want the opposite.

This is the paradox: the "AI" bubble is based on hype. It's not about creating useful things. It's about hype to inflate stock.

If the public resists the hype, then line does not go up.

So they hype harder and harder, repelling most people with their hard sell tactics.

It's a downward spiral.
We can do even more.

The low level programmers and animators feel like they cant strike or demand better conditions because theres a line around the block of people to exploit.

This is why there needs to be more unions YESTERDAY

I see why Newsom wants to be identified with Reagan, because just like Reagan, he’s abandoning LGBTQ people. Also he’s a neoliberal enabler of capitalist domination and control.
The presidency once served as a reminder of our common humanity. Ronald Reagan described its purpose as building "a nation composed of good and decent people."

we were inundated with claims that the massive waste of hours of commute time and insanely expensive office space was worth it for the intangible creative benefit of workers kinda chatting at the water cooler

but now we need all that water for the plagiarism machine ig
Again I say: how fucking interesting that remote work technology is bad and not worth adopting despite all research pointing to productivity gains, but genAI which offers NOTHING is so important to adopt and force on people who have no use for it despite all the horrible things genAI does

The last time Microsoft was able to dominate the tech space was with Internet Explorer, because for the longest time no one bothered to compete and it was already in Windows and free.

So they thought the way to dominate was to include their stuff with Windows and it would just happen.

It hasn't.

This is not normal, and continued and ever-increasing rhetoric like this should not be treated as normal. #holdfast #steadystate
