I am silly and got a PhD in music theory. I like pop music, Renaissance (my diss is on Victoria), late 19th/early 20th century American music, and the intersection of music and the internet.

Mostly on here for sports (BOS/CIN/UConn).

I feel like there is an academic paper to be written by some musicology friends comparing these eras and looking at some of the sad casualties from the 2nd Red Scare (Paul Robeson comes to mind!) vs. how artists are quite united now it seems.
But they also said that Trump is facing far, far more public opposition today than the government ever saw during the McCarthy era. American civil society is weaker than many had hoped, but it's also stronger than it once was. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

Over the last 10 months, the federal government has cracked down on political expression with a persistence and viciousness reminiscent of some of the darkest periods of U.S. history. Welcome to the Third Red Scare.

In interviews w/ Black mediamakers for my forthcoming book the observation that “woke” was a new stand-in/scare word for “communist” came up a lot. I began those interviews in Jan 2021. This piece is important AND we have to acknowledge how much of the play book was already in play before Jan 2025.

Heads up: YouTube TV is giving a $20 credit to subscribers over the Disney/ESPN mess, but you have to actually go into the settings to claim it.

it’s important to understand that Nate Silver’s entire consciousness is filtered through the lens of being a gross nerd his entire life. the opportunity to feel like he’s one of the cool kids is something he can’t pass up, it’s load-bearing for his dork psyche.

the pandemic really fucked him up. he had no expertise in public health, but felt like being a quant guy should make him an expert by default, and people not agreeing with him on that point just sent him into a bizarre radicalizing ego spiral.

Now that I started my new job today (wooooo!!!) I was finally able to clear out my LinkedIn of all of the job searching folks...

...and now that my feed isn't a hot mess, there's a surprising amount of good shitposting happening on there 😂

Sometimes I don't understand local economies. The town next to me with a population ~10,000 is constructing a new AutoZone. There are 3 already existing auto parts store WITHIN 500 FEET of this new AutoZone!!!

I would rather have you quit and find another job than have Dems cave.

You can save your home in bankruptcy, if it comes to that. Collateral damage is inevitable.

Also, there's another thing I considered.

IF they end the shutdown on a CR now though January, that may nullify Trump's plans to end mail in voting and the like, because states will be able to go the courts and say that it's an election year so they dont have the time to change their systems.

Super relevant 👇🏼
Folks, we need to have a little Civics #101 chat, because apparently the media no longer seems fit to explain to you whats happening.

So quick review:

The House passed a clean CR.

The senate has not passed anything.

i suspect there’s some truth to this and also why we should be EXTREMELY skeptical that senate dems as currently constituted would ditch the filibuster should they ever have a trifecta again

This is the real guy to get angry at tbh.
if democrats want to retain any amount of integrity they need to immediately vote out chuck schumer as party minority leader

Someone on the NH subreddit just yelled at me because I said I'd rather there be a moderate Dem in NH than anyone in the GOP because progressives get killed in statewide races...

And this person admitted that they haven't voted in the primaries.

Like what are we doing here folks?!

should dems have settled for the deal? no. is this really going to shape 2026 outside of activating the base to primary everyone who looks like a squish? i doubt it
like as much as this site is in a fit of justified anger over this, the GOP... does not actually win anything by fucking over insurance markets
if they don't fix Obamacare credits and/or fuck it by replacing it with HSAs, next year is going to be uhhhh a healthcare election
November 10, 2025 at 2:06 AM
No. They won't.
Like is the median voter going to remember this?
November 10, 2025 at 2:02 AM
Sam is 💯 correct about this

-someone who has lived in NH for ~27 years
Both of my senators are, predictably, among the Dems about to cave. And it speaks volumes about New Hampshire Democratic politics that I know for a fact there's no point at all to registering an objection to their cowardice.

Modern pickup trucks are really just giant family SUVs except that the groceries in the trunk get rained on.
The bumper says 'rugged working man'.

But the cargo bed says ‘cosplay builder with soft hands’.

Time to ban these fragile-man-mobiles from our cities.

My cynical view is that Dems were worried this could eventually get pinned on them later, and that they trust the Trump admin will continue to fuck it up in ways that won't swing support back their way (or that Dems will get credit for ending the shutdown)

I don't agree though
November 10, 2025 at 12:26 AM
I do think this is a big part of the reason why we're seeing movement.

But this doesn't explain my two Senators (NH) reported to be on the side of stopping the shutdown because NH also has one of the lowest percentage of SNAP recipients.
I think this is straightforwardly about SNAP
My read of it (with very incomplete information) is scoring more political points would have required destroying Thanksgiving travel and at least 10 Dem Senators don’t have the stomach for that.
