I am silly and got a PhD in music theory. I like pop music, Renaissance (my diss is on Victoria), late 19th/early 20th century American music, and the intersection of music and the internet.

Mostly on here for sports (BOS/CIN/UConn).
In interviews w/ Black mediamakers for my forthcoming book the observation that “woke” was a new stand-in/scare word for “communist” came up a lot. I began those interviews in Jan 2021. This piece is important AND we have to acknowledge how much of the play book was already in play before Jan 2025.
Over the last 10 months, the federal government has cracked down on political expression with a persistence and viciousness reminiscent of some of the darkest periods of U.S. history. Welcome to the Third Red Scare.

Of the historians, lawyers, and scholars I spoke to while writing this, many said the same thing: What's happening now is worth than McCarthyism. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

There are a lot of new parts too and we're getting information on how the team is playing together and building chemistry.

There are absolutely things to work on which is good because we'll be better prepared for March

This was always my big sticking point about the calls to make all conferences online only. This cannot be recreated.

And also a lot of the platforms that seemed to try to fill this void during the pandemic have folded!!! Which tells you how great (not!) their business model was

the pandemic really fucked him up. he had no expertise in public health, but felt like being a quant guy should make him an expert by default, and people not agreeing with him on that point just sent him into a bizarre radicalizing ego spiral.

I made it home...at 1:30am. What a doozy. Did you make it back @decmusicology.bsky.social? You're in the same part of the world (I'm in NH). Hope you made it back safe.

The SMT tent is so much bigger than it was when I joined in 2010. You can always give it a whirl!

We just had elections and it unequivocally went as well as it could have for Dems.

Not to mention that inaction is also killing people by not getting SNAP funds out there. Suffering happens either way. The ACA subsidies will get relitigated in January after this CR ends.
