my going explanation for this is that it is sociological. pundits overwhelmingly live in culturally liberal urban areas where they are constantly exposed to a certain progressive cultural milieu in extremely high concentrations. they feel deep resentment and this is projected onto reactionaries!
Is there a psychoanalytic read for the impetus, seemingly ubiquitous among the US pundit class, to automatically exonerate those on the right from any responsibility for their decisions, viewing them as somehow perpetually besieged and behaving in reaction to a morally oppressive left?

I don't have much faith in the Democratic Party these days, but Wikler as DNC Chair would be an unquestionably positive development.

The first time I was exposed to outright nativism in contemporary politics was watching Lou Dobbs Tonight on CNN in the 2000s.
One of the points I stressed in Partisans is how vital non-conservative media were to laundering right-wing commentators’ views: James Kilpatrick on 60 Minutes, Pat Buchanan on CNN/PBS/MSNBC, Tucker Carlson on CNN/MSNBC, Glenn Beck on CNN. Right-wing media matter, but aren’t the whole story.
In 1992 conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer described his fellow conservative, Pat Buchanan a "fascist." William F. Buckley criticized Pat for his antisemitism in that same year. And yet for decades right wing populist Pat got primo television gigs representing "the conservative viewpoint."

In 4 years of asking swing and surge voters their chief beef with Dems in focus groups, #1 thing we hear is "they don't fight." When we ask them to liken Dems to an animal, top choices are slug, sloth, turtle & tortoise.
I mean Jesus Christ if you fight people notice. Even if you have some short term losses, it creates momentum. It changes things. People with any degree of awareness and any desire for improvement don’t want norms or bipartisanship. They want to fight. Give us some fucking fighters.
Obama's '08 campaign won the biggest margin of victory in the last 30+ years. Within hours of his inauguration, Republicans went to dinner and agreed to oppose him on every single item. Two years later, they won 63 House seats and 6 Senate seats.
