Happily married transgender woman. Tech industry escapee trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. Missing my library.
I’ve read the essay and the professor’s critique of it, and I agree with this.
a lot of people debating the merits of that dogshit essay meanwhile the girl’s mom is retweeting demands to ban all trans people from teaching at any level. it’s forest for the trees shit

Altavista was peak. Unfortunately, it was always just a hardware demonstration project.
NGL I want fuckin Altavista back :/
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

Good morning, all! I’m Daisy. She/her. I’m a 60 year old trans woman now living in Portland, OR. This tradition is one of the only things I’ve missed about the other place.

One of my favorite things!
I’m bringing back something that’s SORELY needed.

wild to realize that Ghost In The Shell is 30 years old, we are only 4 years away from the year it is set in, and think about how real life tech dystopia is so much more banal and terrible than anything we could have imagined so many years ago

Here we go with further attacks on trans people. If nothing else, it has a chilling effect on international travel. If I can’t count on my passport being valid when I make my plans, is it worth going?
1. The Trump administration has just quietly updated the State Department website to indicate that it may invalidate transgender people's passports.

This comes a week after a SCOTUS ruling blocking lower rulings allowing trans people to update them.

Worth watching the whole video. This is why I won’t be supporting Newsom.
To highlight the same shit we’ve been saying for at least a month now, here are bullet points from Dr Stryker’s speech below to explain exactly why trans people will not be accepting Newsom.

Dems, I’m begging y’all to elevate someone who meets the moment.

I'm so sick of discourse from supposed allies about where trans people went wrong.

Where we "went wrong" is that billionaires spent unimaginably large sums to attack us repeatedly and major media outlets have spent a decade piling on.

Just finished “Atmosphere” by Taylor Jenkins Reid, which is amazing and everyone should read it. It has occurred to me that it’s basically historical fiction. That’s set when I was 15-20. In a place I worked when I was in my 20s. I feel old.

Yes your taxes should support disabled people.

They should support homeless people.

They should support those living in poverty, children and the elderly.

This is literally the purpose of taxes, and I would far rather support those who need it than continue to enrich the elite.

You can take the girl out of the south, but apparently you can’t take the (culinary) South out of the girl. A yummy bowl of cheese grits for breakfast.

100%! As a school librarian, I didn’t restrict books by age based on my experience as an early reader (as well as the experience and research of others). So much of what I read young gave me the chance to be who I am today.
This #BannedBooksWeek I'm remembering all the books I read at the wrong time, when they were "age inappropriate". Some of them shocked and scared me but I don't regret any of them. 🧵

Newsom has shown repeatedly that he will throw trans people under the bus at the first opportunity. I can speak personally to the impacts of not being able to source hormones and the benefits of knowing I have enough to allow me options for access. There is no valid reason to veto this bill.
1. Yesterday, the press gave Gavin Newsom favorable coverage for signing pro-LGBTQ+ bills.

Little noticed, however, was that he vetoed one of the most important ones: a bill allowing trans people 12 month HRT stockpiles, protecting them from federal threats.

Anti-conversion therapy laws DO NOT infringe upon one’s “right to free speech”; dismantling them WILL lead to gross infringements upon one’s human rights - especially children’s. Conversion camps aren’t just breeding grounds for torture and abuse; they ARE torture and abuse. SCOTUS KNOWS this.

We were told over and over again that this would not happen, just like Project 2025.

LGBTQ+ people exist. Attempting to remove their existence from cultural references and calling them ‘demonic’ is a violation of our American freedoms.

They’re attacking everything they said they’d attack.
1. Led by Elon Musk, the far-right has exploded in a campaign to get Netflix to remove shows with queer and trans characters.

If Netflix capitulates to their demands, an already strained market for LGBTQ+ animators might become even more dire.

The filing in the much-criticized shadow docket could cast trans travelers into chaos, with a decision likely soon.

There's no excuse for the Vice President of the United States to use a heinous killing as an occasion to baselessly frame political opponents as accomplices to murder while threatening to use the power of the government to attack them.

This dangerous rhetoric will only fan the flames.

The last 48 hours have shown why people have stopped relying on legacy journalism and have migrated to independent journalists in droves.

The benefit of legacy journalism is supposed to be “editors” and “factchecking” and they can’t even get that right in a rush to blame trans people.
