Pretty much all questions that were asked at the inauguration of the NHS, they didn't prove particularly difficult to resolve despite the aftermath of the Blitz, massive shortages of labour and building materials, huge government debt
How much are you going to pay doctors?

Which current hospitals get shut down ?

What happens if doctors opt out of the system ? Who is going to invest in new curative therapies. You ?

How much in taxes pr year do you think it's possible to collect if you took every penny from billionaires?
Half the amount that everyone currently pays could provide universal healthcare. Private health companies don’t need to exist. Eliminate them. And use your collective buying power and economies of scale to get it done. Every cent of their profit is healthcare denied.

Labour hate working people
An English local council innovates, evaluates what it did, finds it works (replicating an earlier study in Scotland) … and all councils are told by the Labour government not to try it. What message does this convey? Another victory for ideology & cowardice

But when we crave power over life—endless wealth, unassailable safety, immortality—then desire becomes greed. And if knowledge allies itself to that greed, then comes evil. Then the balance of the world is swayed, and ruin weighs heavy in the scale.

I wrote much less this year than I've written in the past five, so there's not a whole lot to revisit. This piece, though, I still think is probably the best article I've ever written, even if it was a dumb professional move to write it [free to read] www.patreon.com/posts/empero...

So Epimas is in a week, and the gift I most want for the holiday is to see the number of followers on this to hit 666: www.kickstarter.com/projects/unw...

I think it's possible. I believe in the power!

To help it along, for the next week, I'm doing an Advent of Swords.

I find this baffling because recent episode writing has required me to learn a bit about what UK grammar school education was like in the late 18c / early 19c and it was 1) only a tiny rarefied elite who went to school 2) they had to learn rote memorization of Virgil 3) they *hated* it

can't get over the team behind the mcdonald's ad wanting credit for all the late nights and long hours they spent prompting for clips. you've somehow invented a form of ersatz creativity that recreates the suffering inherent to all creative work without any valuable output or intellectual growth
there’s just a certain type of person who would show up to your writer’s group wanting praise for presenting work but violently rejecting any form of constructive criticism that might improve it, and that right there is the target market for AI

Perhaps my take on it is a little cynical, but in recent years I've seen nothing from the tech industry nor British journalism that makes me inclined to give either of them the benefit of the doubt. bsky.app/profile/did:...
Journos will ask a game dev, filmmaker, author (etc.) if they intend to "embrace AI" and however carefully they answer, it'll be spun into enthusiasm.

The tech bros are paying for this coverage. They're desperate to create a sense of inevitability, that everyone's using it. But it's all fake.
Out of nearly 100 qrts, there was EXACTLY one that rightfully called out this article as clickbait and provided a contextual screenshot of what they actually meant

This isn't Gen AI, nor is it a misinformed executive. It's the same team that weathered the CGI boom saying they're ready for round two

At some point we might realise this isn’t just about race, but about the biggest social problem we face: the belief that only rich people are worth anything, that the world must bend to their needs and wants and that the richer you are, the more important and valuable you are to the species
Saw this being shared, didn’t look closely and assumed it was about the US… but no, it’s the U.K.

The venn diagram of transphobia and other bigotries remains a circle.
Kishwer Falkner, the former EHRC chair, is on Sky saying the Labour government is anti-women, citing not just trans issues but also grooming gangs and what she calls pandering to Islam and racial sensitivities. She's not exactly dispelling the idea she was a political actor when she led the EHRC.

It is incredible to me how made up this issue is. No one gave a shit ten years ago. Sure there were your individual mad, ignorant bigots but *Theresa May* was pushing for self-ID because it was the last little bit of logistical sorting out of a settled question: we're ok with Trans people
