Sometimes I read things like this and wonder, are videogames to blame? Especially more casual and f2p ones? This is literally what many games teach: you don't have to read, you don't have to understand, push buttons, nice things happen. I've noticed this is how I approach many games too these days..
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Let's talk about what "challenging art" means, because a lot of people seem to believe that the author fucked up somehow if it challenges the intended audience. The intended audience should be sitting there nodding, going, "So true. I hope this challenges the right people. I knew already."

Having worked on MMOs for much of my career — all of which by nature have heavily online and engaged fanbases — one of the biggest problems your design and community teams have to deal with is charismatic idiots.
One of the producers on Guilty Gear Strive said it was basically impossible to source player feedback on balance changes online because nobody had original opinions and would just parrot what the most popular content creators said and so they had to rely on data and I think about that every day.

I wrote it up over on Mastodon (I find it's better at long threads):

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

Thread. “AI is patching up the holes in conspiracy theories and so making them seem more reasonable, making them easier to spread and more resilient to collapse” was not on my bingo card.

AI relieves the pressure of cognitive dissonance. That’s … not great.
Bellingcat’s contact email has always been a magnet for people with fairly unusual views; paranoid delusions, sprawling conspiracies, the works. But recently, the pattern has shifted, we’re seeing more and more emails clearly written with ChatGPT.

This a big deal: "China’s carbon dioxide emissions have been flat or falling for 18 months"

China's economy has grown by ~5% in the last year, so this comprehensively debunks the idea (again) that emissions are tied to growth. So yes, faster progress needed, but this is how you turn the corner.

A really great thread of unusual 2025 releases. It's sort of terrifying that despite talking to people and reading about games every day, and most of these games being the exact kind of thing I look for/share/discuss, I have heard of maybe four of the games in this thread. Game discovery, man.
There's a round of GOTY discussion going around, and I realized that a lot of my favourite games this year have been absolute Sicko Picks.

So here's a few games I've loved so far in 2025, starting with a mild one: Babushka's Glitch Dungeon. A scrunkly lil' puzzle-metroidvania with so many fun verbs
