I don’t want to participate in exaggerating the “intelligence” of LLMs but I generally think we should treat AI pretty much the same way as Hannibal Lecter. Including not letting just anyone talk to it about anything they want.

there is an anecdote I can’t find now, maybe from Parenti, about soviet troops ordered to dispose of fascist propaganda. As the story goes, they donned black cloth gloves, tore down the nazi banners on every building, and burned them in great pyres. Then they took off the gloves and burned them too.

I think it's not a good idea to believe AI can only be dangerous if it's smart. You can't be like "it doesn't know how many Bs are in blueberry so it's harmless". Dumb things are dangerous if put it in charge of important things. Look at the president. He doesn't know how many Bs are in blueberry

I love thinking about how for the last 10 years warren buffett types have been telling people “just buy index funds,” the market is smarter than any advisor etc and how many people probably now have their life savings in SPY or QQQ. I really like the direction we’re all headed together.

I love thinking about how for the last 10 years warren buffett types have been telling people “just buy index funds,” the market is smarter than any advisor etc and how many people probably now have their life savings in SPY or QQQ. I really like the direction we’re all headed together.
America has, since its earliest beginnings, incubated a deranged protestant notion that pain, suffering, disease, and death are beneficial to the moral character of the laboring classes.
It’s baffling to me that so much of the U.S. (and the world) has decided that letting their kids get sick at school all the time (and spread illness to their parents and everyone else) is preferable to just … adequately cleaning indoor air
