one of the coolest things about ChatGPT is how you can actually just never use it. you can fill your whole entire life with simply not once using it. it's incredible.

There is absolutely no excuse for any Democrat asked about trans athletes to ever respond with anything but “why are you wasting my time asking about FEWER THAN FIFTEEN CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY WHO WANT TO PLAY GAMES WITH THEIR FRIENDS. What is wrong with you?”

My dad used to quote this one a lot. He might still do, but he definitely used to.

My favorite E.B White quote was his response to join an arts council under Eisenhower:

"I must decline, for secret reasons."

"No" is a complete sentence but sometimes you want a little filigree on it, you know?
Remembering E. B. White on his birthday 🎂

Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web & The Elements of Style are all very well, but his greatest accomplishment is this caption for Carl Rose's New Yorker cartoon, from 1928

The best New Yorker cartoon of them all?

that a bunch of billionaires have been irreversibly brainwormed by getting addicted to a glorified chat room adds credence to my theory that spending too much time on IRC as a child acts as a powerful inoculant to the worst impulses of an escalatory group dynamic

yeah this one is very bad rn. it's not funny or cute or "wow, these guys are wild" that there's a concentration camp in Florida. it's a horror. It's "the concentration camp at Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport," but all major news outlets are going with "Alligator Alcatraz" in quotes.
One of the most frustrating things about this era, they will mock the dumb administration talking points all day but they will not fail to report on them and use the language the administration prefers. It's happening again with the concentration camp in Florida. They refuse to not use the name.

Just a reminder that generative AI is theft of labor and intellectual property, uses vast amounts of energy/ water, provides at best mediocre results (if not outright lies or misinformation), actually affects your ability to think over time (mind duh), and is in general a really fucking bad idea.

We do know what happened when they didn't.

Public Libraries are inherently antifacist and supporting them is the most punk thing you can do 🤘🖤
When the Patriot Act was passed, libraries got requests for patrons’ borrowing history. We were prohibited from disclosing those requests.

We deleted and shredded those records and stopped tracking reading history for that reason.

Hear me out —

If parents call colleges freaked about their FAFSA data being leaked, schools may have to issue statements — which would reach a whole lot more families about how warped this is.

Organizing isn’t always calling electeds. Sometimes it’s just calling people with a bigger megaphone.
Musk staff have access to student aid data now.

This is a great reminder from day one of how they work; three or four times a day, every day, they will do something and then insist they didn’t do it and force everyone to burn out arguing that it is what it is.

The sole purpose is to exhaust you and it will absolutely work if you let it.
you don't need a phd in right wing extremism to recognize a nazi salute. what the fuck are we doing here.

It is a directed, organzied, and planned effort to demoralize, confuse, and overwhelm.

Getting through today is important in part because things will be clearer and action points better defined with time.

I think it's important to resist the stuff. For all of us. And for no greater reason than preserving our humanity.

I think the stakes are that high.
The ethical case for resisting AI
