I think I’m just not going to respond anymore to foolishness about how LLMs are a true substitute for thought. It’s an utter waste of time. People who commit to that idea will find out that it’s nonsense in time, and they aren’t going to listen until then.

There's been a lot of very sophisticated, compelling social commentary on declines in cultural literacy in recent years, but honestly it is very reasonable to just boil it down to "people no longer understand that things mean stuff"

The Grey Cup is on, so it's time, once again, to remember that Pierre Trudeau rolled up to Grey Cup in 1970 looking like this.

This is very cool and I bet I'm allergic to it. Because Im allergic to many antibiotics (as well as many other things).
British and Australian chemists have discovered a powerful new antibiotic called pre-methylenomycin C lactone, hiding in a well-known soil bacterium. This molecule kills drug-resistant bacteria without triggering resistance. buff.ly/YlXaONo

I was feeling like everything is stupid & pointless because of the continuing proof that the most immoral, dullest men run everything. And then I went to my welding class & made things & felt better.

So let's keep making things. And being curious & interested & creative & kind.

Alice is the gold standard of what Twitter was when it was great - how you could just find these brilliant, remarkable people with the kind of voices that rarely get platformed or taken seriously, and hear about their lives in their own words without intruding on them or demanding emotional labor
Watching disabled people around the world mourn Alice is a reminder of the good aspect of the internet. 30 years ago, few people outside of SF would ever have known Alice existed. I never would have met her. The internet connected us all. Let’s honor Alice’s memory by using that power and community.
My social media is wall-to-wall love for the incomparable Alice Wong, and I need more words. What captures sadness and/also affection for a community that knows what's been lost?

yeah, i really can't recall any names that have come up in all of this Epstein stuff that have made me go "oh my god, i never would have thought"
It's possible I've just missed it but I don't think there's been a single person implicated in any of this that I've been surprised by? It's like "oh, that rich piece of shit is even more of a scumbag than I thought? Yeah, that tracks"

this is genuine psychological warfare and it seems to happen to every professional woman at some point:
At some point during my PhD, a senior male colleague told me that the only reason another senior male colleague was interested in my research was to get into my pants. Double whammy: apart from harassment fears, that made me think that my research was garbage.

For the bajillionth time:

Write WTF you want to write. If you want to get to “publishable” that is an additional layer of craft from “look, I made this.” This is true whatever genre you are writing in.

Sales are largely out of your control. Craft & hitting deadlines are all you control.

i think online gambling is a cancer that is spreading throughout our society, it was a horrible mistake to de-regulate it, and we desperately need to crack down on it again
i can’t talk about sports gambling anymore without sounding like a crank but i do believe legalized sports gambling is like 15-20% responsible for our current dystopia
The Athletic polled hundreds of players from across the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL about their opinions surrounding how sports betting impacts players — the responses were haunting.

it's really weird to hear the sanitized sales pitch for it too: "it will give you ubi and keep you fat and happy while it does all the work" - aren't these the same guys who think "raise taxes 2% and make buses free" is a wild fantasy of malign actors

i wouldn't mind AI if it was "here's a way to automate some extremely basic stuff" or "look at this goofy shit you can do here to dick around on your computer" - afaik but no one is asking for "we want to make a trillion dollars hopefully by destroying everything that makes life worth living"

I miss living in a city where I could choose walk, transit, bike or car easily. But now I live in a rural bedroom community of a larger city. Transit options suck. I don't want to die while cycling. So, car it is. And even that sucks so, so much. Now, if I could work from home full time....
Funny, but I had very similar feelings about regaining access to a car early in 1998 after having to rely on transit & bicycling for almost two years. I sure didn't miss the stress & hassle of slow, late buses or getting around on a bike in the wintertime rain.
"'I love not owning a car,' said Teal Burns of Halifax. Many others said the same thing in slightly different ways. Those who previously owned a car say they don't miss the cost and hassle of owning a car or the stress of driving." Same. www.cbc.ca/news/climate...

Lots of people reading your hot takes on Bubba are gay or bi. There are lots of jokes to be made--Clinton is RIGHT THERE--but if the best you've got is 101 basic bitch homophobia, got some bad news for you about you.

Nothing is safe trom Trump:
