The solutions proposed for New Zealand's (and virtually every other country's) problems are always like:
"We need to make people work for more years"
"We have to cut back on services, I'm sorry, there is just no other way"
"We have to cut benefits for young people"

never:
"We need to tax the rich"

Thought so. I shall wait for all of the social media posts from various political actors clearly condemning this political violence and unacceptable behaviour against Parliament's first nonbinary MP.

Fucksake. It's quite clear now that they only looked at this benefit policy as political marketing and took no advice on who it would impact – which includes young people with serious health issues and disabilities. Just feckless and cynical. Shame on them. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...
Hundreds of teens with a health condition, disability may be cut from Jobseeker benefit
The government is ending Jobseeker payments to 18- and 19 year olds whose parents earn more than $65,000.

Downplaying an act of violence might have been the appropriate response from him, and might not be the appropriate in our current moment - I don't know - but the complete refusal to make political hay out of it is night and day from the current Government.
Then Green Party co-leader James Shaw was attacked while walking to work. He suffered a fractured eye ball and black eye, but said he still felt safe.

That's what de-escalation and kindness looks like #nzpol
Shaw back with black eye

Winston Peters strolled around and anti-vax picnic and spoke with people who had chanted and written threats of hanging on gallows of Jacinda Ardern, Dr Ashley Bloomfield and so on, but this was all OK as it was just harmless opportunistic politicking #NZPol

Worth noting that we only see decent job growth for young kiwis when the economy is running hot - that's when employers give less experienced people a chance.
RBNZ respond to hotness by hiking interest rates to slow the economy down. Youth unemployment is a feature of our economic model, not a bug.

You can't fit thousands of job seekers into tens of jobs.
And while Luxon might call himself sorted, the country isn't, even if he doesn't want to do anything about it.
I am admittedly rage-posting now, but come the fuck on! Can we have an actual conversation about what we are doing as a country?

this country is so funny: a series of welfare subsidies that end up in the hands of landlords and private childcare providers; a chronically unaffordable housing market; a publicly-owned electricity generation and retail racket; oligopolies in supermarket and telecommunication sectors lol

It remains a disgrace that New Zealand police have no in-car or body-worn cameras.

There are absolutely privacy and operational issues to consider, but those aren't novel and can absolutely be addressed with legislation, technology and policy.

Put cameras on cops!
