It really feels like Pope Francis being slightly liberal (for a Pope) broke a lot of people's brains.
Maybe, but I'm thinking about that time John Oliver listed the ways loan sharks were more lenient than corporate lenders.
Not condoning the mob exactly, but without sufficient regulations and people willing to enforce them, corporations can be a lot worse than organized crime.

I’m still against making sports betting illegal - better to have it run by a corporation than by the mob - but I am 100000% against “frictionless” sports betting. You should not be able to place a depraved parlay from your phone

The Trump administration on Friday released the names of 614 people whose Chicago-area immigration arrests may have violated a 2022 consent decree, and only 16 of them have criminal histories that present a “high public safety risk.”
