This is the "testing the waters" phase of the playbook. The GOP ecosystem targets groups like Somalis, Haitians, and trans people specifically because they've calculated that the average person's passive disapproval won't ever turn into active defense. They're exploiting public apathy.

As a cis white man who is around almost exclusively cis white men and forced to be around conservative cis white men, they need to experience real pain to get them to learn damn near *anything*

LGBT people existing doesn't actually harm the people who oppose us existing, which means us existing *doesn't* punish them, which means that they have no incentive not to keep pushing to harm us if we don't impose consequences for them having done it before
