Not real pleased to see one of the last trustworthy science communicators on the net say the hallucinating world burning false oracle might have a point.

Hell of a take from an ostensible climate defender, and makes me worry I can no longer take anything SciShow says at face value.

This is the logic we agreed to live by when we agreed to let ‘er rip on covid. If you get sick, if you die, that’s no one’s problem but yours. As I’ve said from the beginning, this is an anti-societal choice that isn’t containable. Disregard for health safety was never going to just stick to Covid.
It is a consequence of intentional editorial decisions about what "news" to cover and what to largely ignore that Trump's recent decision to have people across the U.S. get cancer, developmental diseases, become infertile, and die is not felt as a "public safety" emergency.

Officially trying to build a studio for a publisher pitch. To that end, I'm looking for game devs who've been victims of layoffs or studio closures who'd be interested in signing on if it's greenlit and funding is secured. More info in the thread to follow, but here's the initial list:

i have learned that way too many americans see the concept of 'freedom' simply as the potential to be rich and privileged, even if they aren't, & not things like freedom from dying from a preventable illness if you're poor, or being imprisoned for minor crimes, or persecuted by the police, etc

The prayer room at NYU — accessibly only via NYU ID — was vandalized with islamophobic graffiti and prayer mats were reportedly urinated on.

NYU didn’t address the incident for several hours. Elected officials quick to condemn antisemitism have said nothing.

I've already had two federal grants terminated and face a 33% pay cut due to future terminations. It's painful, but not as painful as the conversations I'm having every day with brilliant trainees in graduate school and postdoctoral positions who see little future for themselves in US science.

Really important piece to share widely. Too many Americans don’t know how severe a threat this Administration poses to our scientific infrastructure, global leadership, and health security

Republicans are done with democracy. If the US is to survive, we must be done with Republicans.

This is genuinely an important article. The two main lessons from Hungary appear to be:

DO NOT WAIT

DO NOT UNDERREACT

Authoritarians like Orban and Trump rely on opposition being unwilling to believe that what is happening is actually happening. That’s their window.

If you’re a Democratic elected, work at some institution under assault, or (perhaps most of all) work in the press, and you find yourself thinking “Should I wait and see? Am I overreacting?” the answer is “This is what they’re counting on: you realizing you underreacted later.”

Easy example because I'm an Orioles fan: O's owner Peter Angelos was never forgiven by the other owners for publicly refusing to hire scab players during the 1994-95 players strike. Shunned and fucked-over by the other owners and MLB front office until his death. That's class solidarity!

it is because they want to impoverish the country! they don’t want high end manufacturing. they want americans working subsistence wages making t shirts and clothes hangers
This is part of what’s so insane. As they talk about re-shoring and manufacturing they are actively trying to destroy an entire us manufacturing industry that already exists.
