I don't think any single statistic has ever done more to shape my view of the world than this one:

More than half of all human beings who have ever been born did not live to celebrate their 20th birthday.
one of the greatest struggles for any left-wing political movement in the modern west (and increasingly beyond) is how much of the sheer abject deprivation, fear, and often fatal dangers that were inextricable to the lives of any but the wealth just...barely exist anymore
It is genuinely hard for most people to grasp how poor the past was.

My partner asked me if there were any bright spots for Republicans last night and the closest I could get was Frey winning in Minneapolis.

The factional grifters will hate this, but the Mamdani-Spanberger-Sherrill axis actually suggests the outlines of a broad, emerging Dem coalition organized around both anti-Trump *and* affordability politics, not a party bitterly divided against itself.
These big wins will embolden Dems to take on Trump's lawbreaking and show there's a price for GOP enabling of him. Folks hate to hear this, but normal patterns are asserting themselves: Liberalism isn't dead, Rs are likely to lose in 2026, and Trump is really unpopular, not a magical exception.

It’s amazing we constantly get articles about how liberals don’t understand what conservatives want and meanwhile this is their mental model of the world.
They do not think we are a real mass movement.

That's why they have all the crazy "Cathedral" and "Longhouse" and paid protestors shit.

They simply do not believe people believe in liberalism.

They lack a realistic theory of mind for us.

Felix Salmon not understanding how SNAP and Head Start work on this week’s Slate Money is a pretty capstone to him being totally taken in by the ID company grifters who claimed they were uncovering a lot of benefits fraud.

Does anyone wanna tell this person 54 is a bigger number than 45, therefore, it only failed to pass because the majority wanted it to fail?
Outcome: Failed to advance on a 54-45 procedural vote (requiring 60 votes to overcome a filibuster).
Party Breakdown:All 51 Republicans voted YES (with Sen. John Thune switching to NO procedurally to allow refiling).
Most Democrats (48) voted NO, blocking the bill.

I agree with this. There are a lot of people out there who think both parties are the same and if Democrats put a show of pushing out people with Nazi tattoos and shitty text messages and abused employees then all of a sudden you're making inroads.
Putting a Democrat with a Nazi tattoo in the Senate normalizes Naziism in our federal politics for a long ass time.

All these recent stories about secret Nazi group chats? Anytime that happens going forward will be met with "But Platner."

It's not a purity test. Think through the consequences.

“Was gutted,” which implies the thing already existed.
The ACA was gutted by Democrats. you can argue those key democrats could've been siding with what many see as the more liberal/patient centered options. or you could say it was unfortunate that Dems didnt have 60+ more liberal senators.

but it was Democrats.
Ok, but maybe you need to re-work that a bit. Also, you could also acknowledge that the original ACA was gutted by Republicans before it was finally passed, which is partly why it has been a problem for some.

people get this weird sort of reverse galaxy brain where they observe that it is possible to logic yourself into insane positions with utilitarianism and respond by rejecting utilitarianism as a solution to problems that boil down to "punch everyone in the balls" vs "don't do that"

yeah, i think a commitment to public health obligates you to get vaccinated and, when you are sick, do what you can to avoid spreading that to other people. the demand that one mask at all times in public spaces is, i think, unreasonable.
