This place has an unhealthy concentration of people who obsessively follow American politics without understanding American politics at all

hilariously saw someone say "even jon stewart saw right through" the Democrats' "shit" and uh has no one else notice Jon's been Little Mister Both Sides since his literal Rally To Restore Sanity and/or Fear?

Just FYI for those asking about Sarah Kendzior's suspension, as far as I know this is all the info we have so far:

There was a Social Studies teacher who got handsy with a girl in high school and I happened to see it, and his brilliant plan was to get the girl he touched kicked out of Theater so that way if she told on him he could just say "she made the story up in revenge" but he forgot there were witnesses >
My experience is that I was smart but socially awkward and also The Absolute Worst at math, and it was one of the few things other kids felt were relatable about me, we could all go "wow yeah that D+ in Calculus sucked" together
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

I know Glaswegians keep some unusual pets, but I've never come across an aerial quadropus before! If you see Nipsy on your travels around the city, please let their owners know. 😀

I am a little concerned that Indivisible has gone from being the No Kings anti-Trump organization to the "it's not about left vs right" organization

Because this absolutely is about opposing the fascist right and maybe energy and funds should be spent on that first

Had a notif from someone in the conspiracy thread who last night had been very sensible, but this morning she's hollering at me because now she BELIEVES the theory that she didn't believe yesterday

She got a good night's sleep and woke up deciding the Jews secretly control the world, good job bitch
In the first 25 posts I saw when I logged back in just now, I saw two people, normally smart and sane, complain at length about *obvious jokes*

Last night I saw smart people see one boring 50-year-old press photo without source or credit and create elaborate conspiracy theories about it

I guess I'm thankful that most of the worst comments with "solutions" like "1000 years ago we didn't have airplanes so just let the airlines go bankrupt" are from accounts who don't share any followers with me

The really racist "this is Obama's fault" lady is mutuals with one of you though so 👀

Earlier the doomering was so bad on here that I saw multiple posts from people believing in a fictional version of the procedural bill passed in the Senate last night who said they were going to kill themselves because of it

Again: They were going to commit suicide over something that didn't happen

This is an absolutely insane administrative process. Within the space of a week, states were told by judges/White House
*no SNAP benefits
*half benefits
*full benefits
*pause provision of benefits.
Result is chaos, uncertainty, and uneven access to benefits depending on where people live.
NEW: The Trump admin told states it must immediately "undo" the work to provide full food stamp benefits, or face penalties. The feds sent this in a late-night memo, only adding to the chaos and confusion around SNAP. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/09/b...

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

This is vaguely ridiculous. The article being passed off as debunking Franklin's contributions admits Watson and Crick stole another group's data "but it was normal for the time," downplays Franklin's discoveries, and ends with "Watson and Crick eventually did the right thing by crediting others"

I still can't get over the time about six years ago when there was a whole thread on Reddit about how nobody was ever actually kidnapped in the 1970s and I posted FBI stats and got my account nuked for it

a lot of true crime stuff about things that happened in the 70s and 80s is people being like "three months after our neighbor, Kidnapper Dan, kidnapped our daughter and left a note saying 'I have kidnapped your daughter,' we became concerned and involved the police"
