The President of the United States is publicly calling for the political prosecution of his political opponents, urging the death penalty because they urged soldiers to uphold the rule of law.

This should be front page news everywhere. It is not, which tells much about how we got to this point.

This is why mechanical computers like the fire control computers in submarines had “fuse gears” made of softer metal that would break first if something bound up and were located in easy-to-access locations for repair.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at and repair.—Douglas Adams

One thing that Aaron doesn’t mention is that as an election approaches an opposition party has its hierarchy, specifically the party leader and prospective prime minister, thrashed out in advance. In the US, however, there are multiple candidates, some running *against* the legislative leadership.
"Opposition party" doesn't make sense in the context of the US system, people should stop using it because it is clearly clouding people's understandings of what is possible.

◾️ Bloomberg did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while OpenAI did not provide a comment.
Larry Summers says he's stepping away from "public" commitments — which apparently means he's staying on the OpenAI board. www.nbcnews.com/politics/pol... tip @techmeme.com

I get the awfulness of “Monica Lewinski” jokes, but you know what? I’ve never seen her quoted or heard her speak that I didn’t come away with a distinct feeling of respect for her as a human being. I enjoy being reminded of that feeling … then I ferociously block the “comedian”.

Neither “compromise” nor “capitulation” applies to what just happened in Congress. The right word is “culmination”, and the Democrats clearly won on all fronts except messaging.
The thing about culmination of a campaign is the war continues.
I’ve read a lot of takes on the shutdown cave, but this one is really important
What’s the difference between compromise and capitulation? Compromise trades concessions. Capitulation pays ransom to stop deliberate suffering, and teaches your opponent that coercion works. There are effective responses to coercive bargaining. What we saw was not one of them.

I’m really having trouble with this “Dems lost the shutdown” claim. Asked “what’s wrong with Trump policy?”, they answer “everything” (and they’re right and all thinkers agree). Asked “ok, the GOP has a trifecation, what’s your demand?”, they reply “ACA subsidy extension”. So GOP throws a tantrum

Interesting read. My own, limited, experience with DnD was far more egalitarian, at least with respect to gender. In college in the late 70s about 1/3 of the players and half the DMs, were women. In grad school in the early 80s it was 50-50 for players, although both of the frequent DMs were male.
The far right is obsessed with Lord of the Rings and Musk keeps posting about "hobbits" because modern scientific racism owes more to fantasy worlds and gaming systems than genetic science, and they see both as effective mediums for right-wing propaganda www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

The total faceplanting of anti-trans messaging is an unalloyed good.

Mamdani was a very promising candidate and I'm looking forward to seeing what he does while remembering it's a very difficult job in a city that, historically, starts hating its mayors moments after they're elected.
