As someone who started reading Marvel comics in like 1981, this is the same exact ennui that made me stop reading in the 90s - crossover, gimmick, and event fatigue.
'Death comes for us all' intones Magneto solemnly, as he and everyone he knows are resurrected once again into IP purgatorio.

This whole thing smacks of gender is genuinely a foundational line of our times
kind of darkly funny that "gender studies" is the stereotypical "useless degree" because gender studies will help you understand a large and important chunk of the current psychosis in american life

The Knights of the Golden Circle were a white supremacist, pro-slavery secret society in the 19thC USA. Their scheme was to break the slave states always from the U.S. and to conquer so called “the golden circle,” or all the area within a 2,400 mi radius of Havana, Cuba, as an empire of slavery.

A big reason a lot of Gen X are like this (derogatory/complimentary) is that we saw so many “trusted authorities” rush to support the Iraq War, despite it being obvious bullshit led by incompetent clowns from the jump.

That “Oh, they are all liars” realization spiraled out into our modern politics.

In the aftermath of 9/11, Iran offered public statements of sympathy and support and provided unprecedented levels of support against Afghanistan.

David Frum’s primary contribution to history was adding Iran into the “Axis of Evil” speech because he liked the rule of threes.
Some people are just impervious to any lessons history or common sense can offer us.

the reason people sometimes act madder at democrats than republicans when republicans do impossibly evil shit is the same reason why, if you hired an exterminator to handle a roach infestation and he showed up to feed and play with them instead, your first instinct wouldn’t be to yell at the roaches

My whole life, advocating war has been fed to me as “the adult position,” akin to drinking your coffee black or reading the business section of the newspaper. Let’s be very clear — war is the childish nonsense of impulsive destructive idiots playing baby-brained video games with real human lives.

Don't forget folks: allowing yourself a vision of the future you'd want for our country and planet - not the one you'd settle for, not the one you fear, but the future of your dreams - isn't naive, it's a vital cognitive skill. That's how we articulate what we most value. What's worth fighting for.
Instead of whatever this is, we should have a government getting lots of new homes and apartments built, lots of clean energy built, lots of high speed rail and transit and bike lanes built, human rights for everyone, economic & healthcare opportunities for all, & innovation that leads the world.

Watched A House Made of Dynamite.

I’m sympathetic to the “right wing competence porn” reading of some of her other recent films, but I think this is something different.

This movie is incompetence porn, shallow yet important people running scripts blindly and floundering when they don’t work.

Eh, I'm already underemployed so I'll say it

When your research on extremism is funded by the US government, you simply can't substantially criticize the war on terror. You must endlessly reassure the ghouls of their goodness. Not to mention you might get stymied by boot lickers in peer review.
as you may have grokked i'm working on a military scifi project, and as i am insane, i've been doing a lot of reading about warfare, fiction and nonfiction. lots of american accounts. and it's striking how american texts about the war on terror still fail to reckon with it on any moral level.

The reason, perhaps, why “illegality” isn’t the pwn we want it to be is that many, many people for many, many different reasons do not see the law as something that serves the public good.

It serves elites. It serves big business. It serves violent cops. It serves billionaire rapists. And so on.
