One of the funner moments from my South Africa trip occurred when these two little borbs decided to chase each other on the edge a lagoon.

(They're Black Crakes, btw.)

I put bacon in my mac and cheese for the first time tonight. Now I'm mad I didn't try this sooner.

I regularly see them when I sift leaf litter, but I've only observed phoresis once. There was one riding on the back of this harlequin beetle.

Never a question of "if", always a matter of "when" an oil pipe leaks....
In 2005 I spent 5 months in Ecuador investigating oil extraction.

Around then German bank WestLB funded a new Andes pipeline despite past spills.

What I saw was shocking and mostly unseen. This 2022 video shows just one example of repeated spills poisoning rivers and communities.

#Molybdenite Dioptase looks nice, but don't touch!

Molybdenite's grease is useful, and will live on in your heart, your shirt, the door, the cat and everything else!

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

The buff-tip moth (Phalera bucephala) has mastered a very particular kind of camouflage.

When they close their wings up, they resemble a broken twig.

Native to large parts of Europe, there's regional pattern variation that reflects the local tree species. This one best resembles birch twigs?

This is the sort of problem I wanted to work on prior to the administration change. But now I have zero interest in working for the feds at this point, there's no stability there.
The effects of wildfires last for years after the blaze has been extinguished. The ongoing problems in New Mexico highlight how local, state, and federal systems aren’t equipped to handle the prolonged recovery associated with increasingly large and destructive wildfires.
