The US has published a list today of dozens of environmental, scientific, and development organizations and treaties from which it is withdrawing. This list includes the IPCC; IRENA; the UNFCCC; UN Water; IPBES; among many others. Absolutely nuts. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

Re-upping this column because the idea seems to be gaining traction. But I think I didn't go far enough in this: the government should obviously be deleting its accounts so as to not have their tweets appear next to CSAM. But it should also be pursuing charges against X and banning it in Canada.

Do I have any friends who own breweries or are starting one? A friend's brewery in Victoria, BC, is selling off their long-standing brand/IP as well as equipment (a lot gone already, but canning line and tanks still available at great prices).

I didn't miss much elementary school due to illness as a kid. Only two days, I think. One was the grade 6 trip to La Ronde amusement park in Montreal. The second was the day we learned long division. Please nobody tell my employer @ucalgaryscience.bsky.social I never learned.

Using imagery online of the shooting by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, we’ve created an animated sequence which highlights the approximate positioning of officers and vehicles at the scene. The red dot represents the agent who fired the shots. Yellow dots are other agents who arrived at the scene.

Honestly, fuck this.
I see and deal with the consequences for our graduate students of UCP cuts on a daily basis. And I see an upper administration that has done absolutely fuck all to fight back - they bend over and take it, and respond by laying off staff and increasing student fees.
And now this?
New documents show while the University of Alberta was under mass budget cuts that resulted in layoffs and a 100% cut to child care funding, the president was spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on travel

Expenses have doubled since he took office
U of A president's expenses higher than previous president and other institutions - The Gateway
President and Vice-chancellor Bill Flanagan spent $506,901.01 on travel and hospitality in his first term, higher than other presidents.

I am old enough to recall when being a predator was a bad thing. At least for humans.
Ogles: "It's important that we have a stake in Greenland, that they are quite frankly a protectorate of the US. They've been in relationship with Denmark - that needs to end. We've spilled more blood protecting Greenland than the Danes... we are the dominant predator force in the Western Hemisphere"

Update #22 9:09 AM Jan 6 2026
On Monday, January 5 Calgarians used 514 million litres (ML) of water, well above the safe zone of 485 ML. We continue to urge residents to conserve water while crews work tirelessly repairing the water main break.

Oh man, it must suck to have your contributions to a project ignored on such a massive stage.

Reminds me that time when some guy made a movie about the ingenious plan a bunch of Canadian officials made to smuggle US embassy personnel out of Iran, but the movie credited the CIA for the plan instead.

🚨 2 days in a row of Unsustainable Water Demand 🚨

We need all Calgarians to work together to bring this water demand down. Conserve in every way you can.

Right now the concern is for emergency services across Calgary who need water to save lives.

Every Drop Helps 💧
Update #21 7am Jan 6
Calgary we're still in the water red zone. We need your URGENT help to buy a little more time for the repair. Please do everything you can to conserve. The City has asked employees who can to work from home. Employers, please do the same to help reduce strain on our system.
