The brilliant people at Planet Labs have captured an image of the 13 January 2026 landslide at Burutsi village in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This landslide killed 28 people and blocked an important road. The runout distance is about 500 metres.

I thought you may have seen this Dave. Unfortunately it does look almost certain that there will be fatalities. There has been an enormous quantity of rainfall in the Bay of Plenty and other areas in the past couple of days, including 300+mm in a day in Whitianga, with numerous slips likely.

On 22 January 2026, a landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall at Mount Maunganui in New Zealand. Six people are missing. Two more people are confirmed to have been killed by a landslide at Papamoa.

A new paper (Jia et al. 2026) examines the underlying causes of the 8 February 2025 Junlian rock avalanche in Sichuan Province, China, which killed 29 people. Repeated wetting and drying cycles weakened the rock mass until failure could occur under unexceptional rainfall.

There are reports that a significant landslide occurred yesterday at Burutsi village, in the Kashebere area of Walikale Territory, DR Congo. At least 13 people have been killed and 30 are reported to be missing. Kashebere is located at [-1.31207, 28.67374]. The landslide was triggered by rainfall.

Recovery operations continue for the 36 victims of the 8 January 2026 garbage landslide at Binaliw in the Philippines. The landslide appears to have a rotational form at the crown and to have been a flow lower down.

A fascinating paper (Ozturk et al. 2025) highlights the shifting pattern of landslide risk in cities using the 2025 Granizal landslide in Medellín, Colombia. They show that climate change means that the urban rich are at increasing levels of threat alongside the poor.
