This is not the first such failure at Mae Moh mine. In a paper in the journal Engineering Geology, Hoy et al. (2024) describe a 1.2 km long waste dump failure on 18 March 2018. The landslide looks to have been remarkably similar to the event this week.

The Network Rail Task Force Review of Earthworks Management (I was a member) provides detail on why so many landslides occur on the UK rail system.
"Network Rail have inherited and manage 190,000 earthworks assets...The vast majority are over 100 years old."

Tru, but great care is needed regarding colour vision deficiency. Multi-colour scales present real challenges for many people.

It's actually a mirror image of the Tessina landslide.
