Yet another unacceptable, preventable death.

Not Ann Arbor proper, but our efforts cannot stop at the city limits. Washtenaw is a five-lane stroad with a 45 mph speed limit. There’s many homes and businesses on both sides, stops on heavily-used bus lines, and few crosswalks.

Can't decide what's more irritating about this situation here. The pile of snow AAPS left on the sidewalk where they stopped plowing? Or the snow that the city of Ann Arbor has left untouched on the sidewalk adjacent to the Greenview park. #a2council seeclickfix.com/issues/20600...

“Dutch people cycle an average of 2.6km each per day. If this pattern was replicated worldwide, annual carbon emissions would drop by 686 million tonnes.

This mammoth figure exceeds the entire carbon footprint of most countries, including the UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Australia.” @euronews.com
Cycling like the Dutch would slash the world’s carbon footprint
If everybody cycled like the Dutch, we could offset the UK or Australia’s entire carbon footprint.

An excellent explanation of why the presentation to Transportation Commission on Nov. 19 was so alarming. The presentation should be retracted and revised to properly align with #a2Council 's affirmed (and re-affirmed) Vision Zero goal. Read to the end of the thread for the call to action.
The @annarborobserver.bsky.social newsletter had a decent summary of the dynamic at the #a2council Transportation Commission meeting last week (mailchi.mp/aaobserver/a... ).

But we need to take some time to talk in detail about why the city's presentation was so damaging and damning... (🧵)

The online survey for the Ann Arbor Roadway Rightsizing project closes on December 19.

If you have not yet filled it out, please do so, and tell the project team to put safety for ALL road users first in their designs.

A lot of people think basically all traffic laws are a fundamentally illegitimate pretext to harass and fine motorists at random, rather than regulations designed to prevent injury and death.
Striking that opponents of automated enforcement so often cite something easily fixed in policy design as a reason to reject the whole idea. For example fretting that local governments will use ATE as a money-printing machine when you can just stipulate the revenue go to specific purposes.

No bike rack = permission to bring your bicycle inside. We don't make the rules.
I had to pick up an order at the World Market in downtown Seattle & there are no bike racks for several blocks in any direction so I brought the ebike into the store with me.
I continue to ❤️ my ebike. It makes me *so* very happy, especially tooling around in protected bike lanes!

someone tell the California ACLU who is disproportionately more likely to be killed in traffic accidents including those involving people under the influence
The California ACLU is staunchly opposed to the ignition interlock device program and is a big reason that it has not been expanded. Despite the fact that California heavily subsidizes the cost for low-income drunk drivers, the ACLU says that the program is a form of "racialized wealth extraction."

Really feeling this in Ann Arbor. “The success in countries like Norway stems from prioritising safety in all aspects of transportation planning, not accepting traffic deaths as inevitable... We must be willing to prioritise human life over speed and convenience.“ #A2Council

And let's not forget, this debacle emboldened anti-sidewalk activists with a playbook to delay, obstruct, and oppose almost every significant sidewalk gap-fill project that's been done since then. Years later, we are still dealing with the consequences of this #a2council
In August and Sept 2021, a group of anti-sidewalk activists lobbied the city to cancel the construction of a sidewalk on the north side of Sunset Road from Brooks to Newport.

They argued, among other things, that Sunset is "adequately" served by the single sidewalk on the south side. #a2council

“The real problem isn’t that Vision Zero doesn’t work; it’s that many places have adopted that slogan without making any real changes,” said Amy Cohen, who founded @familiesforsafestreets.org. “It has not been implemented with the resources & commitment & courage from legislators that is required.”
Good story on the success of the more dead kids movement. Sure wish the Post's "local transportation reporter" had centered the story around some place a bit more local than Los Angeles, California.

#A2Council if we can’t have municipal snow removal can we either:
A: have city workers or contractors clear the laggards at cost plus a fine OR
B: set up a bounty program where insured & bonded bounty hunter snow clearers can document uncleared walks & collect the cost & split the fee with the city?
Giving #a2council the neighborhood drama. After fed up parents said they’re going to report houses because their kids are falling on the way to school, they’ve been told “shame on whoever reported them rather than talking to their neighbors or lifting a finger to help.”

I give the fuck up.
I think it’s great if you can leave a note or offer to help.

But as a woman using the sidewalks and usually with young kids, I have personal safety considerations to make before approaching a strange house, especially for a negative reason. Resent being told using SeeClickFix is somehow harmful!

#A2Council yet another car-wrecking crash at Summit & N Main this morning. It's mildly traumatizing to see regular car-disabling wrecks next to and on the sidewalks you use every day. The drivers usually walk away, but people on our own neighborhood streets don't have airbags inside a cage.

Why did we not do a World Day of Remembrance in Ann Arbor #A2Council? Even this city in Ohio did one. Next year?
Thank you to everyone who came out in support of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in the U.S. yesterday, and to Friends and Family of Safe Streets Columbus for hosting the event. Vision Zero honors the lives lost and families forever changed by traffic crashes.
