Every year in Metro Vancouver, car crashes kill 100 people. We can get to zero by demanding that governments design transportation systems to put safety first. http://linkin.bio/visionzeroyvr
We've received a promising reply from staff re: the Broadway closure.

TLDR: turn restrictions are coming to reduce rat-running on 10th and Ontario.

We've emphasized the need for these restrictions to include physical barriers, not just signs. Will continue to keep folks posted!

We have a lot of catching-up to do.

It won't be enough to just start building cycling infrastructure again, let's build it faster and cheaper to create connected networks and spread the benefits to every neighbourhood.
A study out of SFU shows something we already knew: Vancouver's bike infrastructure has stagnated. #bikeyvr

Flipped vehicle crash at Broadway/Granville. Currently it's a 30 km/h construction zone because of the B-way subway.

Once again, I'm on my "if you cause a vehicle to flip in the city, you should lose your license" bent. Yeah, allow appeals, but flipping a vehicle indicates excessive recklessness.

A VZV volunteer called in these stairs to 311. They're not only slippery but also the only route to the bus stop from the east. City came out and installed metal traction grating! No action yet on the ramp and accessibility requests, but this is an improvement for now. We love when 311 works!

Thankful no one was hurt in this horrifying crash.

Our roads are designed for too much speed, our vehicles are too large and accelerate too quickly, our licensing system is practically a formality. This was a daycare, kids could have been in that yard.

us: 2 people have been hit since this detour started, can we get some communication, signage, and infrastructure upgrades?

city: best we can do is politely ask drivers who visit our webpage about the detour to not use the bike routes

we assume this is phase 1 and the modal filter is coming next??

Hornby Street in downtown Vancouver has seen 4 recent incidents of driver incursions onto the sidewalk, one of which killed an infant. We're calling on the City to install bollards on Hornby to prevent this from continuously happening, and to serve as a pilot for expanded sidewalk protection.

Sad to learn that a cyclist was hit at 12th and Quebec yesterday, day 2 of this detour. I don't know the specifics of what led to that crash, but I sincerely hope we can see some quick action to ensure the local bikeways are a safe travel option - right now they're really not.
Broadway is closed between Main and Quebec for four months. The city has done nothing to prevent rat-running on Ontario and 10th Ave bikeways, creating a giant mess. We'll be pressuring council and staff to fix this ASAP.

The one time I was full on hit by a car was when Burrard was briefly closed for an accident or maybe construction, and someone decided to treat Pine (one block over) as a replacement freeway, ran a stop sign and nailed me on my bike in the intersection at 14th. I was lucky to be only medium injured.

It's rat runners all the way up to 16th from this, someone's going to get killed by one of these idiots. Remembering every single time I've seen them shut down a road out on the west side there are traffic barriers and signs for every side street, with enforcement.

Won't share screenshots for privacy reasons but we've already heard back from 3 councilors (from 3 different parties!) who agree with these issues and are raising them to staff. We'll keep folks posted!

In 2020, Vancouver Council voted to protect kids by making 30 km/h zones all day around schools. All the city had to do was swap out the old signs.

Nearly six years later, they're still not done.

Drop pictures of old 8-5 signs in the replies, so we can show council that they need to step it up!

Many reasons to ban oversized trucks in Canada:

1. Safety. Deaths of pedestrians, cyclists, & other drivers has increased.

2. Road maintenance. Heavy vehicles means more frequent road repairs (higher taxes).

3. Parking. These trucks don't fit in parking stalls.
